Good morning.
I have an early errand and then home for the day. I hope to spend quality time at my puzzle. I'm not sure what to make for dinner, but I'll think of something.
What's on your menu?
Something I don't think we've addressed is how we learned to cook. My mother and grandmother taught me. Then as an adult I just expanded my skills by reading and watching cooking shows. Dh is a really good cook and we learned some stuff together. Btwn my mother and my mil I learned to really bake. How did you learn?
What do you have planned for this weekend?
Wishing everyone a happy, enjoyable and relaxing weekend.

I learned some from my mom but a lot from reading cookbooks and getting recipes (written on recipe cards) from friends/relatives. Tomorrow we're going to the Bay Area for a meet and greet with our fellow Croatia travelers. Looking forward to reconnecting with travelers from our Spain and Italy trips. Dinner will finally be the Chinese Chicken Salad I've been threatening for a while! From my weird sense-of-humor stash: ETA: I think today is the 19th scrapmaven! Happy Birthday lucyg!!

I've got a few minutes before class to pop on here! I taught myself how to cook once I had a husband and kids ... watching The Food Network, reading cookbooks and visiting sites like allrecipes.com ... I really had no choice because we had to eat! Now, I force myself to cook for just me by subscribing to meal kit boxes that are delivered to my home ... I love them! Tonight I'll be cooking one of those ... something with shrimp ... yum! I have two showings for my house booked so far today ... My weekend plans are just to sell my house!!!!!! Happy birthday lucyg!

lucyg Happy Birthday ! I learned how to cook with cookbooks and trial and error. My mother cooked every day but only learned some of the basics from her. No plans for me today. Maybe I will take some time and work on some cards for September birthdays. No idea what we are having for dinner yet.

@srapmaven and sueg- It's the 19th here in the states. :-) sueg I'm so glad you've arrived safely and I know you're so anxious to get your hands on the little princesses. Happy Happy Birthday to you lucyg DH bought an airplane yesterday. jeepers, just what we need is another plane and another hangar expense, but it makes him happy and that's what matters. Now we have to work out the logistics of getting to Michigan to bring it home to TX. We finally had rain in Central TX!!! Happy Happy Dance!! and more predicted for the next week. please let it be! DH is heading to the ranch, so dinner will be one of my Daily Harvest dishes. I'm anxious to try them. The weekend is going to be pretty low key, tomorrow I'm going to a co-worker/friends house, she just moved into my old neighborhood, so we are going to have dinner and wine. I'm also going thru my stamps and cataloging them, stamping 2 copies of each. one for a binder and one for in each envelope. I've reached my threshold of not being able to tell what they are after they've been used a few times. The binder is to help me remember what sentiment stamps I have and not have to page thru every set every time. Wishing everyone a wonderful day and weekend ahead!!!!

Haven't popped in in a while but glad I did today. Happy day lucyg one of my fave peas! @leanec good luck selling the house. Hope it goes fast and for $$$. My eldest is selling her townhouse in Madison WI. They never really put it officially in the market. A neighbor saw them packing boxes or something and ask if moving, then promptly texting something to someone and bingo. They close in the 25th. It's not a highend place by any stretch of the imagination but nice and not a bad size, 1600 ish feet. I just did the math and they bought and sold at perfect times. Selling for 148% of purchase in a 2+ years. Not bad! Especially for first buy right out of college. They would have got more too but the ice maker leaked recently and sime flooring needs to be replaced. The buyer wants to do to pick out own so getting credit. Win for both of them and my kid doesn't have to go thru the hassle. Come to think of it the insurance covered so they really will be making more via insurance $. Nice. There's a nice breeze coming through the windows. So nice after so much hot, hot, hot ! 🥰 Enjoy your weekend peas

Thank you for all kindness the other day, dear peAps! (( Hugs )) to anyone who needs 'em! I still keep up with this thread, and even though I don't post, I send up little prayers for anyone struggling. lucyg... Your favorite bullies and I wish you a paw-some, wonder-bull birthday !!!!!!!! ntsf....I was catching up on previous threads, and wanted to tell you that I am fascinated by your career as a park ranger! I dunno if you're comfy sharing piks, but the places you described sound so beautiful, I'd love to see piks of you there. Also, how cool that your DH is going to 'Burning Man!' What interesting lives you have! Plans for the weekend...apply ice and to as many joints as possible, and try not to cry every time I move. DH is visiting Dad at the nursing home today and run errands while I try not to feel sorry for myself for not being able to go. Up until 2 weeks ago, I *ALWAYS* went grocery shopping with DH no matter how much pain I was in, and had so much fun. He is always in awe and disbelief that I still LOVED walking the aisles, even in pain. But...I'm just not up to it now. It's so weird to remember how I used to run errands and shop for HOURS on my own, and loved it. I could spend 2 hours alone just looking at all the fun stuff at Dollar Tree! ohhh, I miss it! I have some very close, dear friends who want to see me, but I am so afraid of making them uncomfy with my constant cries of pain/ aches ( if I move the wrong way, I can't help but yell out in a scary way), ANNND....another huge problem that I put into a "spoiler alert" but realized it's still TMI for this thread. Talking on the phone and texting are nice, but of course, we want to SEE each other, too!

Happy birthday lucyg! Hope your day and upcoming year are great! Leftovers for dinner tonight. I’m doing a big grocery shop this afternoon and I hate cooking on the same day as menu planning, shopping, hauling it all in and putting it away. Looking forward to a quiet weekend. Have a great day, all!

Thanks, you all. I’m embarrassed that I woke up and didn’t even remember right away that it was my birthday. Forgot to order my birthday cake that I love in advance, but will get one eventually, maybe when my DD is in town. Having dinner with my sister (probably Thai food) and watching season 2 of Only Murders in the Building. I live an exciting life. scrappintoee , I’m sorry you’re in so much pain.

scrappintoee.. I have splinter computer skills, know how to do a lot of stuff.. but don't know how to post photos. sometimes being a park ranger, like being a ski instructor (something else I did) looks a lot better from the outside than holding the position. i have a degree in environmental interpretation/education.
I learned some cooking from my mom.. we never ever went out to eat due to many food allergies.. no pork, no seafood, no poultry, no milk, no soy, no safflower oil, few spices, no wheat...and by age 9, when my mom had her last child, I took over most the daily baking. we had a dessert every night.. and made all the cookies and such. my mom cooked pretty basic midwest stuff. she was not really into it.
when I was about 12, i started volunteering for the cooking volunteer crew at the ski lodge we went to..the lodge held 60 people and provided a bunk and a dinner and breakfast every ski weekend. so by 15, i could plan, cook, direct a crew to make dinner for 60 people. I cooked a lot in my teens.
so I am a decent cook. but after all these years are fairly bored with the daily grind of it.
we are having chicken and ravioli for dinner. peaches for dessert.

Happy Birthday, LucyG🥳🎉🎊🎈
I learned to cook from both parents...Mom was mom to seven of us so a decent cook...Dad was a cook by profession. My biggest challenge was learning to cook for 2!! Funny story, American chop suey was a staple in our house growing up, economical to make for a family of nine. The first time I made it for my DH, (he grew up in a small Polish family) He was thrilled with it, one would have thought I prepared a gourmet meal!!! We still laugh about his reaction!!!
Dinner is salmon....as he grew up in a Polish Catholic family...fish on friday...which is fine by me I ❤️ fish!!! I am working 11-7 saturday and sunday...so the only real plan is visiting a work friend who is struggling with recurrent breast cancer. Several of us try to visit frequently, as she doesn't get out much these days 😢

looks a lot better from the outside than holding the position Oh trust me, I know! People used to see me in my cute scrubs with adorable pink and blue baby footprints all over it, and they said "ohhhhh, you work with BABIES.....how FUN!" .....hmmm.....yeaaaa, 12 hours on my feet with extremely intense, scary medical crises of premature and/or heroin-addicted babies.

Happy Friday and Wishing lucyg the happiest of birthdays!! I guess I started learning to cook in the 7th grade in home ec class. I remember making pretzels and learning how to make a white sauce. My mother was not a great cook, in fact all I remember about her cooking was all the terrible meals that we were forced to eat, like liver and onions, sos (sh_t on a shingle), meatloaf, veggies boiled until they were mush. You get the idea! When I got married it was trial and error and trying a lot of recipes. I never knew that you could make mashed potatoes from real potatoes instead of the flakes from a box. My mil taught me how to do make real mashed potatoes and gravy. She was a real heavy cook. Lots of butter, gravy, and heavy sauces. I think I do pretty good, I've never poisoned anyone and everyone is healthy!

Hi Everyone, scrapmaven I hope that you are having a great day! cadoodlebug Have fun meeting your group. The meme is hysterical! leannec Fingers crossed; one of these are the buyers. sueg I am so happy that you made it to your homeland safely! Have fun with your Sophia and Lucia. austnscrapaddict Have fun with your coworker! Does your DH use the planes for crop dusting? PLurker Your DD was very lucky that someone wanted to buy it without having to hit the market. Your meme is funny! paget Enjoy the leftovers. ntsf and karenlou Your dinners sound delicious! scrappintoee I am so sorry that you are suffering with so much pain. I hope that the icing helps you. Huge hugs! lucyg This morning, DH and I went out to breakfast with the neighbors. Tonight we are taking the boys out for dinner; because tomorrow we are dropping off our oldest to his university. He hasn’t even left and we already miss him. I learned to cook from mother. I stood next to her for years and watched her make our meals. When I was about 9, she allowed me to help her add ingredients. She never measured a thing. It was always a pinch of this, some of that and a dash of this. She did everything by taste. If it tasted like it needed something else; it got added. If I had to much in my hand. She would tell me to put some back in the bottle or toss it in the trash. I hope all of you have a peaceful day.

PLurker it's so nice to see you here. Welcome back. scrappintoee, I'm sorry that you're suffering so much. I really want to encourage you to get together w/your friends eventhough you're in pain. My 2 preemies thank you. ntsf, you've had quite an interesting life. Your profession is very interesting.

I haven't posted in a few days but I have been reading the thread and keeping up.
We have spent the the last few days getting things in place for MIL. We discovered that she didn't have a will (although she said she did), so had to scramble to create one with the necessary signatures required to make it legal. If she didn't have one when she passes, the estate would be a shit show! Also getting insurance, power of attorneys and even a DNR in place.
She has good good days but mostly bad ones now. She is starting to hallucinate which we know is from the medication but it's still so sad.
DH and I went for a bike ride along the waterfront this morning before it got too hot.
I dont remember learning to cook to cook from my mom, I think it was more trial and error through the years.
Supper tonight is butter chicken over rice.

Happy Birthday lucyg. Go order your cake karenlou coincidentally I had my teeth cleaned yesterday too. I love the hygienists at the office. I got a new brand to me whitening strips. I hate yellow teeth. I probably do it too much. Cooking is a combo of my mom & her mom. My dad’s mom did not cook. Now it’s trying recipes and taking classes. I live going to classes. Not sure on dinner. Luke is sick so I stayed with him today. So nothing got done. He’s snuggling. I have to take it when I can get it. I do see an ENT in his future. scrappintoee I hate that you’re in so much pain. I agree with scrapmaven still see your friends. austnscrapaddict my friend’s dh bought a bigger plane a few weeks back. This is the first one she’s ever agreed to go up in.

I've reached my threshold of not being able to tell what they are after they've been used a few times. I put my stamp collection into an Evernote file and it is the best thing I ever did to track and find the right image/sentiment. I can access it on my phone or Macbook and it so great for finding exactly what I'm looking for immediately. You create a Note for each stamp set, pull in a photo off the internet (or take one with your phone) and tag the heck out of it. When I first started I would tag things generically (birthday, holiday, etc.) and quickly learned to tag the brand, stamp set name, all the full sentiments, images along with the generic category. Happy Birthday, lucyg! Hope you get the cake!! I'm trying to motivate myself to clean the darn house. There is ALWAYS something I'd rather do, but stairs don't vacuum themselves. DH and I have been talking about our next move and my one and only deal breaker is no stairs. We have 21 to deal with in this house because of a split staircase. Dinner is going to be Sole with a Mediterranean Salsa Verde (not to be confused with Mexican salsa verde, which is also delicious).

Happy Rainy Friday!!! We are so thankful for all the rain we've had since yesterday (3" and counting) as we are in a severe drought. It's been the perfect rainy day as no contractors showed up. Attended the Zoom version of a quilt guild meeting and now I'm doing some work on the baby quilt. On my breaks I'm trying to see the Quilt Festival class offerings. They released the list this morning and I managed to get through Mon & Tues before the site went down on me. They claim that some people are getting on, but I've been trying for 4 hours with no luck. austnscrapaddict - have you been able to check out the classes yet? Happy Birthday to lucyg ! DH bought an airplane yesterday. jeepers, just what we need is another plane and another hangar expense, but it makes him happy and that's what matters. Now we have to work out the logistics of getting to Michigan to bring it home to TX. Fun! I do empathize with you on the hangar and aircraft expense though. It was like getting a big raise the day DH sold his plane (vintage Champ). What does he fly - single engine or turbo prop? As for the learning to cook question, I have a BS in Home Economics so much of my initial experience was in home ec classes. When we first moved to SF, I had just gotten my degree. Years later a good friend from those days told me everyone was afraid to have us to dinner initially because of my degree. I asked what changed their minds. She said they got to know me! My main area of study was clothing & textiles - not foods! Over the past few years I have improved with classes, as well as all the cooking shows and websites/Instagram. No clue what dinner is. DH had wanted to go out for Italian, but I'm not feeling it with this weather. We'll see who wins. Have a great weekend everyone!

I think we're having spaghetti tonight, but we may end up with takeout (cheesesteaks), not sure yet. I've been a little under the weather today & have no energy. I learned to cook from both parents, as they shared the cooking with each having their specialties. My mom was a teacher so when my brother & I (1 year apart in age) were old enough to be "latchkey kids", we would come home after school and have a snack, then there'd sometimes be a note and ingredients for us to start dinner that she would finish when she got home an hour later. So we'd do stuff like mix up the meatloaf ingredients or marinate the chicken then put said meatloaf or chicken into the oven. My siblings and I also sometimes got creative in making our after school snacks too...by the time we were in HS we were also responsible for our younger sister after school, so lots of creative snacking was going on, much of it unsanctioned (and definitely not healthy). Let's just say our parents didn't exactly keep track of how long the box of Little Debbie snack cakes lasted (not long, I tell you!)...or whether we actually baked the cookies after we made the choc chip cookie dough. My mom was also a wonderful baker and often made homemade bread, Parkerhouse rolls, cinnamon rolls, cakes, etc. I got my love of baking from her, as I always helped out with the baking, learning side by side directly from her. In college I learned more recipes from roommates, then cookbooks and cooking shows after that. I've taught my kids pretty much in the same way, cooking side by side with them as they were growing up. As adults they all like to cook and try new recipes. (Makes my heart happy.)

Hmmm...some things I learned from my mother, though I watched cooking shows, collected cookbooks and recipes from friends and roommates. Haven't popped in in a while but glad I did today. Happy day lucyg one of my fave peas! Ha, that's exactly what I said to myself when I opened the thread today! Happy Birthday lucyg, I hope your day is fabulous. DSO got rained off work on Friday, so he just pottered around the house all day. I had hoped that he would go and get us takeaway for dinner, seeing I was working. But he got the fire outside going, and had downed a few too many bevvies and would have been over the limit by the time I had finished. Instead he cooked some pita with garlic and fresh rosemary over the fire.
