Leaving this weekend for a week at Yellowstone - we fly into Bozeman in afternoon and out of Jackson also in afternoon.
We are staying in the park (at Canyon and Old Faithful Inn) but I’d like to at least see Bozeman and Jackson a bit since I’ve never been there. Any tips for a good restaurant in these towns or other advice?

My daughter went to school at MSU and still lives in Bozeman so we go there a few times a year. You can't go wrong at Montana Ale Works on Main Street or Burger Bob's, also on Main Street. They have an Old Chicago Pizza on 19th street that is REALLY good. You need to go to Roost (really good chicken) and Feed for breakfast. One of the best places I have every had for breakfast is Feed but my daughter also loves Main Street Over Easy. They also have a bagel place called Bagel Works that is also really good. I can't help you with rec's for Jackson but have a great trip. Too bad you aren't driving from Bozeman to West Yellowstone, that drive is breathtakingly beautiful!
If you have time, you should rent tubes and float down the Madison River. It is really fun!

In Jackson we've always liked The Bunnery for breakfast (or breakfast for lunch) but when we were there in June it wasn't quite up to its usual standards. We also like Liberty Burger. Both are on Cache St, not too far from each other. I've heard the pizza place in the old Teton Theater (also on Cache St) is good but we haven't been there.

I don't have advice for food but I'm happy to hear that you are going to Jackson. You'll have to go through Grand Teton National Park which is just gorgeous. Make it picnic and have it by the river on your way to Jackson.
Jackson is very, very busy. We were there last summer and it's a bit of a zoo. We stayed at a hotel there so had a place to park. I'm not sure where everyone else was parking. We had pizza at a place that used to be a theater, it was very good. We also ate a place that was a block away from the main square. It seems if you get out of the square you're better able to find a place to eat that isn't quite so busy.
I hope you have a good time at Yellowstone. We were scheduled to stay for 3 night but ended up staying only 2 because everything was just so crowded all the time. We would even get up early in the morning to get a jump start and that didn't help much. It might be better this year since it's the second year after vaccinations were available.

I have several recommendations!
1. Stop at Costco in Bozeman for bear spray - its typically 2 for the price of 1 anywhere else, and since there are 1 of you, its perfect. Donate it to your hotel (or other tourists) before you leave Jackson.
2. Just a reminder that the northern and northeastern gates are open. You will need to enter via West Yellowstone.
3. Food options in the parks are pretty crappy, cafeteria type food, or over priced convenience type foods. I would buy a cheap cooler and stock up at the Bozeman Co-Op on food and drinks. (or Costco)
4. Take swim suits and a towel and take a dip at the swimming hole on Firehole Drive. Its hit or miss, if its open, but it was open this past Sunday and is a pretty fun experience.
5. Other Yellowstone highlights (besides the obvious and well-marked places and boardwalks): Storm Point - its a short but delightful hike with a stunning view of the lake. Also Gull Drive - busses aren't allowed and its a lovely quieter spot for a picnic or quick drive with a view. The visitor centers at Canyon and Old Faithful are newer and have some interesting info. You can rest bear spray at a hut in Canyon but have to return it there and you'll still need it for the Tetons.
6. In Grand Teton, you want to arrive at hikes or destinations early - like before 8. Parking lots will fill up. At Jenny Lake, buy a ferry ticket then HIKE around the lake (clockwise) and go to Hidden Falls then up to the overlook and then on to Cascade Canyon. Crowds will thin out past the overlook and it is just gorgeous. Go as far as you want and then ride the ferry back (make sure you get back beofre the last ferry). The other hike I recommend is Surprise Lake and Ampitheater Lake from Lupine Meadows. Might see moose, might see bear. Carry your bear spray and make noise (but do not wear bells- they are worthless).
7. Jackson eateries: the Bunnery for breakfast (this is an old classic), Bin 22, and Teton Tiger. There is a whole foods for sandwiches, snacks, etc to take for picnics too. I love the alpine slide next to the Snow King resort, but just because I liked it as a kid and taking my own kids. The aerial tram in Teton Village is pretty fun for a great view, if you have time. Get a picture in City Park of the famous antler arch and the famous cowboy bar is just across the street from the park.
Have fun!

Backcountry Burger in Bozeman was delicious! Their special the last time we were there was a Caprese burger... nice fresh slice of tomato thick fresh mozzarella slice. Yum!
I agree with The Bunnery in Jackson. We ate breakfast there, and the pancakes and waffles were very good. The burgers in the Jackson Drug (right on the corner of the main square) were very good for lunch.

Yellowstone just announced a severe reduction in food service availability in the park. Buy a cooler and take picnic supplies. In the Tetons, skip the crowds at Jenny Lake and go to nearby Moose Ponds. We’re 2/2 for actually finding moose there.

Thanks everyone!
I know the food situation is dire inside the park. We are flying in - so no cooler.
We do have 3 nights of dinner reservations- but they are at like 9pm and even that is super dicey since I don’t want to be driving in the dark roads with the wildlife! Not sure what we will do….

But the first 2 nights we are in a Canyon Cabin - with no mini fridge I picked that room bc it has a porch and I like relaxing outside at end of day. But maybe I should switch to a room in the lodge. The next 2 nights we are at Old Faithful Inn and those rooms are renovated with a fridge.

SallyPA - we did the hike to Cascade Canyon after taking the water shuttle - it was AMAZING! And nothing has been too crowded - we hiked Yellowstone too which blew us away… And eta - it was my 20yo who told me to “hop on that rock and pose” which is a bit embarrassing lol Me standing on a rock in Cascade Canyon:

Love that he had you pose lol. It really is such a gorgeous hike - glad you got to do it! Yellowstone is great for a the geology and unique features, but the hiking in Tetons is better for scenery 🙂

SallyPA - I agree - we’ve been hiking in Yosemite for the past 20 years and it has made most places we hike pale in comparison - we loved Yellowstone and the hydrothermal features and thermophiles were amazing (and super interesting to my microbiology student) - but the scenery here in grand Tetons certainly rivals Yosemite and has been amazing. We are enjoying the sunset right now on the lake at Signal Mountain Lodge

Our trip to Yellowstone--We arrived on Labor Day weekend and it was perfect. The weather was nice, but most of the tourists were not yet there. We could see Old Faithful without huge crowds etc. We left the following Friday and the road opposite us was bumper to bumper with people arriving.

I am in Yellowstone right now, I don’t have any restaurants recommendation but don’t miss Lamar valley if you want to see the Bisons ,only part of it is open because of the flood and you need to make a reservation online ($2) . The crowds are thinning so no problem to park anywhere it’s the perfect time to come . Have fun .

Thanks to your tip , we went to Moose Ponds yesterday and saw a mama Moose and her young yesterday. Like always the peas have all the info, I really appreciate thanks.
