I was one of the people who admitted to not always returning carts. I live in the northeast in an area where cart corrals only became a thing in like the last 10 years. If it was snowy or icy and I had a kid in a carseat and I was parked far away, I didn't always return it to the store. I would try to put it near a curb - and, based on the looks of our lots back then, I was in solid company (carts everywhere.) The peas not so politely informed me about the errors of my ways and I have since joined the judgy, critical "wtf is wrong with you" crowd. This. But I consoled myself with the knowledge that I didn't leave a cart IN a parking space. That to me was inexcusably rude. Now since our grocery stores have installed cart corrals, I always return them. I know we live in the same vicinity - it makes me nuts that Stew Leonard's doesn't have cart corrals.

Yeah, between that, and shoppers aimlessly drifting in the aisles tasting samples and being transfixed by the animatronic milk cartons, Stew's can be an annoying place to shop.

Sounds interesting. Can you explain what this is? katlady, Stew Leonard's is a specialty grocery/dairy store with locations in western CT and eastern NY. They have a small petting zoo, a large garden center, and inside the store are singing milk cartons and bananas (“I'm a Chiquita banana”…sung by a banana with a turban made of fruit on its head) and that kind of thing. Think low-rent Disney. A cow head in the dairy department moos when you pull a rope. Used to terrify DS when he was small. 😀

If I ever get to your part of the country, I'll need to check it out! Right? That description made me want to go shopping there right now. Cheap entertainment while shopping is apparently right up my alley. I am one of those people with hidden disabilities, until recently breaking my ankle. I’ve been cleared to start driving again and took my first solo trip to the grocery store. I’m walking with cane but part of grocery shopping to me is returning the cart. It would take a lot for me to not do it and walking before I broke my ankle wasn’t always the easiest for me

I usually put it back. Very occasionally if the cart corral is really far away and I've used every ounce of energy walking the store, or my pain is really acting up, I'll put it out of the way, but not all the way to the corral.

I’m way too much of a rule follower to NOT bring it back to either the corral or to the front of the store. Rain, snow, sleet, hail, I’m bringing that sucker back so it won’t roll off into someone else’s car or be in someone’s way. I detest it when a cart is left parked in between the cars because half of the time you can’t pull into the open spot because the stupid cart has rolled in the way.
On a related note, back when I was younger and childless, I always thought the best spots were the ones closest to the door of the store. After I had my kid, I discovered I had been doing it wrong my whole life. The *best* spots are the ones directly next to the cart corral, regardless of how close that might be to the door especially if you have a little kid with you. It’s so much easier to get the kid/car seat into the store if you can plop said child into a cart pulled straight from the adjacent cart corral. You breeze in, do your shopping, breeze out, load your stuff in the car, load your kid, and it’s easy and effortless to park that cart right back in the rack next to your car. You don’t have to leave your kid, you don’t have to leave your car, the cart gets back in the rack where it belongs. Win-win-win!
My kid is way too big to ride in a cart these days, but I still think the spot next to the rack is the best place to park. An added bonus is that with the rack spot next to you on one side, there will only be one car parked on the other side, so the risk of having your door dinged by someone careless parked next to you is halved.

Well, I will say, in my Walmart case, it was a pain. Before I realized there were no cart returns in the aisle I parked in, I had to walk down the aisle until I found a space big enough to push my cart through to the other aisle. I sort of understand why people abandon their carts in those aisles. But, I definitely don’t park in those aisles anymore. wal-mart is the worst when it comes to having enough corrals!! no matter which location i go to, there are not enough corrals. half the time i walk the cart back to the store front. it's not usual to see an ocean of carts scattered all over their parking lots. uggg. par for the course for wal-mart. The two Walmarts closest to me have at least two cart corrals in every aisle.

Now, if I can just get people to understand that if you push the carts into each other, the corral will in fact hold more than three carts.

My youngest is 13 and I still reflexively park nearest the cart corral so I can return easily without endangering my child 😂

Hey, I think I remember you. LOL.
Why wouldn't anyone return the cart? I participated in that thread back then and couldn't fathom NOT returning the cart & doing the right thing, plus I placed value on my car (or anyone's cars) not getting dented or scratched by a flying random cart in the wind. NOW, however, I see a different side. I got to hear my beloved husband, Gary, say that he felt badly for taking a ride-on cart and not having someone take it back sometimes. Or he'd feel strong enough to take a regular cart but couldn't bring it into the 'corral' and walk back with nothing to lean onto. So, there ya go. We don't think of the elderly or disabled, huh?
There have been a few times where I have been in excruciating pain and I'd just hurry and put the cart safely against a pole, etc., but not back where it should have been. I couldn't stand to be out in the sun for 1 more second or I'd be ill. There ARE situations that could prevent us from doing the right thing. I'm glad that (stupid!!) Publix does have enough workers to constantly be outside retrieving the carts.
It's a whole different conversation depending on where we are in life, huh?? I'm SO happy for you and Evi and the girls. Your family is so beautiful. Hugs.

The whole point of this thread was because I couldn't fathom what the hell that infamous multipage train wreck was all about. I guess I have a clearer understanding? Maybe. I still can't imagine me ever not returning a cart, no matter how old I get. But I'm in those shoes yet so who knows.

The only time I haven't returned a cart was when Alison was a baby, and I shopped at a store without convenient drop-off spots. There were two news stories when I was pregnant with her: in one, a baby stolen was from a cart when a mom was unloading it; in the 2nd, a mom put a baby in a car while she unloaded and the car was stolen. As a result, I was a little paranoid and never let my hand off her when we were loading/unloading. And frankly, sometimes I was just DONE after a shopping trip - I wouldn't know until she was 2 that my constant post-pregnancy heartburn was gallbladder attacks.
I always return them now, but seeing the PetSmart ad at the bottom of my screen makes me wonder why somewhere that lets you bring your pets where you are likely to purchase big items doesn't have cart corrals. I always walk back up to the store at ours.

I always. I have watched carts slam into parked cars when it's windy out. Now that I work at a grocery store... holy crap people can be lazy. I'm a supervisor and sometimes I'm rounding up abandoned carts IN THE STORE. WTF people? Our carts will lock their wheels if you try to take it off the property. The one day one of the floor people came over and she asked for the wheel unlocker device. Someone made it as far as the bus shelter with one. It was a hot day and she was not a happy camper that she had to go to the far side of the parking lot to get one cart.

It was a weird little thread that kept growing, but it was basically about people believing you were rude if you didn't return your cart to the proper place. And, hey, we all get old/older, but let's hope that we both don't get to the point where the physical activity of returning a cart becomes too difficult for our physical health. Evi takes good care of you, so you're lucky!

It isn't an issue for me because with the wheelchair I use the smaller, hand held baskets that you return when you check out.
That said - if I were able-bodied & used a cart, I would return it in most cases. I freely admit I wouldn't take a cart back if it meant leaving my children unattended in a vehicle, even for 30 seconds. I am one of those 'never allow chilcdren to be out of your line of sight in a parking lot,' types. That takes precedence over courtesy.

I am finding myself now taking a cart in with me, when I walk through the parking lot. Either out of the cart corral or if there is a a stray one, I definitely grab that one. I figure it is one less cart they have to wrangle inside. At Walmart the other day there were no carts at all near the entrance, so I had to go wrangle one from the parking lot. Since there were three near each other, I slammed them all together and took them all to the door. I should've asked for a blue vest and partial pay. I have done this and then people took the carts I brought back and tried to take the last one I brought for myself. Cracked me up.

I must be the only one who is thrilled when I pull into a parking space and the cart is right at my front bumper ready to go. 😂

Most of the time I could pull the cart up into the rack from the driver’s side of my car on the outside of the rack.

I generally park in the parking designated for persons w/ disabilities.

Most of the time, I either return it to the corral or leave it in the store positioned to where the next customer who needs it can grab and go.
Every once in a while I won't return it and prop it against a pole or the cart pusher is there near me and just takes it. He can usually tell when he needs to grab it from me since I am there so often. I have a bad knee, bad back, and currently dealing with lung issues so sometimes I have no energy to take the cart back after shopping.

I work in the cart wrangling business at this time. And I’ll forgive anyone who couldn’t easily return their cart.
But the guy who always leaves his on the sidewalk with his empty box of apple pie, I’d like to hear his story.
It’s the kid though who had the cart hour before me that ignored getting his carts who I’ve had a problem with.
