When some lady decides to go through the 20 items or less with no less than 35 items.
Then wants to argue with the cashier about some nonsense and then take something out and have the cashier void that item.
I swear there should be a counter displayed over the register as things are scanned and it beeps then you get close. If you go over by more than 4 or 5 items (because hey, everyone miscounts sometimes and I am not a total bitch) there should be one of those blue light special things that flashes and makes noise to let other shoppers know that you are special.
Walmart on a Saturday in a store with no self checks. Need I say more?

Like the blue light special!!
Unfortunately I am sure the cashier is not allowed to say anything for their safety!!

My grocery store has two express lanes that are NEVER open. I shop when I'm willing to wait in a regular checkout line because I hate self checkout ... I'll admit that I don't shop at Walmart but I do know that my local one has a million self checkouts.

Oh, man, I love the idea of a siren light and an announcement! Maybe, "APOLOGIES TO ALL WHO ARE WAITING IN THE EXPRESS LANE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE WHILE WE SERVE A CUSTOMER WHO CAN'T COUNT."

Not defending that particular shopper, but sometimes a clerk in an express lane will put over a customer from a regular line if she is not busy. Maybe that happened here.
One grocery store I go to does not have self checkout, and another one I go to has temperamental self checkout where something always goes wrong, so I don’t use those. But in general, I like self checkout.

Arrogant self-entitled inconsiderate assholes. The cashiers are not allowed to say anything. The stores won't put a stop to it.
In my opinion, no one should have more items than the sign indicates.
I've seen families with 3 or 4 people go to the quick check with a full cart full of groceries. If anyone says anything, they claim we each have 20 items, that is how they justify ringing up 60-80 items. I've seen people that have 40 cans of cat food, and think it's one item because it's all the same item.

Ugh, I'm sorry. That's frustrating. I've been in the situation where an express lane cashier called me over even when it was clear I had waaaay more than the allowed number, but I've ben in your situation as well. Being called over always stresses me out for exactly this reason. Although I can at least say that I never held things up even more by arguing with the cashier. At one time I used to like to go shopping at a local store right after my oldest went to school. I could take my younger one and go to the store when it was so quiet and peaceful. But I eventually stopped going because they only had express lanes open (2 of them), so I had no choice but to go with a week's worth of groceries to an express lane at the exact same time of day when 100 people wanted to buy a coffee and a donut or bagel on their way to work. It got really old dealing with a line of people behind you who are ticked off at you due to the store's policy not to open any regular lanes at a certain time of day. I actually switched to another store because of it. What was supposed to be lower stress wasn't, all because of this silly rule. If you're going to treat the express lane as a normal lane, then why not just open a regular lane?? Anyway---sorry for the tangent! And sorry you got held up in line.

I have gone through the ten items or less with 12 items a time or two usually it’s something that was hiding under my purse or bag. No way would I go over like that. I have had a cashier call me over when they are empty and every time someone comes up behind me. 99% of the time I go through the self check. I only go through the regular lanes if I have alcohol which isn’t often or if there isn’t a self checkout open. I also do curbside to avoid people if possible.

There aren’t quick check lanes any more in most of our local grocery stores. Usually 1, maybe 2 if it is a good day, lanes with cashiers. Otherwise, it is all self-check.
Wegmans is the only chain here that still has multiple cashier-staffed lanes. I usually use the self-scan app on my phone there and scan and bag (in my bags) while I shop there. So, I still go through self-check, but it just involves scanning the QR code at the register and my scanned items upload in seconds and I pay and leave.

Those are called express lanes here, and I can't remember the last time I saw one actually open. They might be open at the busier times of day, but I like to avoid those times. Target and Walmart never had them around here, just one of the grocery chains.

I do self-checkout even when I have wine or beer. Our registers let you scan those items but then the light flashes to alert the employees who's watching the self-checkouts. Then he/she comes over and authorizes it, and then you pay. I love self-checkout.

The lack of cashiers is one big reason I almost always do grocery pick up. I hate going through a self-check line with an entire cart full of groceries. The stupid banging platform isn’t even big enough to bag the groceries. It’s exceedingly rare for an express lane to be open.
