It’s me again, asking questions as usual I’m a little irritated. I bought a Platinum a few months ago. I used their “sandwich” (can’t recall which one) on a 3D folder a while back and the embossing folder broke in two while going through the machine 😩 I bought a Spellbinders 3D embossing folder a while back, and just went to use it and am not having much luck figuring out a sandwich. I’ve tried every combination I can think of, including layers of chipboard and also completely ruined a metal shim with no luck. After Googling I found a video from Spellbinders about using embossing folder in the Platinum. Those sandwiches don’t work either. Any newer info from them is using their new ($55) plate system. I’m not thrilled about shelling out the $$$ on the set in order to use an embossing folder or two. I’m not finding anything else that might be helpful (though my googling skills sometimes are not up to par). So, short of making the purchase of their new plate system, has anyone had luck McGyvering something that works for them? I just earlier today (before I started trying to use the Spellbinders folder and remembered what a PIA this whole thing is, ordered another 3D embossing folder (Altenew)…duh. if you read this far, and it makes sense (I have a couple glasses of Rose under my belt), and have had some success with the Platinum and either a Spellbinders 3D folder or an Altenew 3D folder, I’d love to hear the details of your sandwich. thanks so much!

For the Altenew 3D (with the original Spellbinders platform) try using the base plate, the embossing folder and a top clear plate. For the Spellbinders new 3D folders, try base, the brown rubber mat and then the embossing folder (no top plate). Red is Altenew and black is Spellbinders.

I tried that sandwich with the spellbinders die and was less than thrilled. I’m wondering if maybe I need to try a heavier weight paper. Off to give it a try again…. And that’s the Altenew folder I purchased. You used it on a card recently, and I immediately added it to my EH shopping cart. I’ll get tons of use out of it myself

Do you dampen the cardstock first? Yana Smakula showed a comparison and damp cardstock comes out much more embossed and detailed with a 3D folder. She dampens the cs a lot, but other people just spritz it.
I have a different machine and folders but I have used thin fun foam, sometimes stacked, as a shim.

I know some die cut machines, even the exact same model can be "tighter" than others. When I find the right sandwich, I write it down.
I have tried the damping the cardstock with a baby wipe method, Jennifer McGuire recommends it too. I didn't do it on either of these.

For the Altenew 3D (with the original Spellbinders platform) try using the base plate, the embossing folder and a top clear plate. This is what I’ve been doing with my Altenew, SSS and Sizzix 3D folders and it’s worked for me. I’ve honestly not had any issues using any kind of embossing folder in my platinum 6. MichyM Just curious, what didn’t you like about the results?

So, I was using cmpeter 's sandwich and stil was getting inconsistant results. However, adding a layer of chipboard to the sandwich didn't help. So, I went back to her sandwich (thank you so much) and wet the paper very slightly with a damp sponge and it helped it to emboss quite a bit. I hate wetting paper if I can avoid it because of the warping that can take place, but apparently this folder needs it. The problem I was having pinklady was that the first half of the paper that went through was embossed fine, but the second half was coming out with a much less deep impression. And joblackford I purchased some of that thin fun foam back in the spring when I was using the Revolution. I haven't used it since I got the Platinum, but I'm going to play with it again this afternoon. Thank you. Thank you all for your suggestions. They helped!

Out of curiosity, you might try just shimming where the impression wasn’t good, rather than the entire piece. OR do the shimming that gave uneven results but add a shim in that iffy area. Even a piece or two of copy paper works as a shim. When I used to have to shim dies, I often started with CS, and added more cardstock or copy paper to build it up. But if there was just a bad spot, shimmed only at the spot. So I’m curious about the folder. I didn’t try chipboard because it didn’t have the flexibility/bendiness that CS or paper has.

That might explain why you’re not getting a good impression. If it’s good on half then I would just run it through, turn the embossing folder around and run it through again to see if that solves the problem.

I almost suggested that, but then thought it’s best not to turn it around because the open end can get caught. But that’s for my Gemini if there’s no plate on top of the embossing folder. So it was dumb not to suggest it. 😳

However for this sandwich, I didn't use a plate. It was the platform, the rubber mat, and the embossing folder with paper inside.
