So I’ve been pretty vocal here about the fact that I hate grocery shopping. I’ve been doing grocery pick up since way before Covid and I’ve never had any problems.
Until this weekend.
I had a big order of food to pick up from Target. I had to go to a different Target than usual because the closest one to my house had too many out of stock items. I pull up to the pick up area and I’m the only one there. I wait a very long time. So long that the check in screen on the app changed to a message that said “we are sorry for the unusually long wait.”
Finally, an employee comes to my car empty handed. She says, “I’m sorry it’s taking so long, I accidentally gave your order to someone else. An employee is reshopping your order right now and I’ll bring it out as soon as it’s ready. I will bring you a gift card to make up for the wait.”
Ok, I’m annoyed at the wait, but mistakes happen and they are being nice about trying to fix it and make me happy.
The employee goes into the store and comes back out with a gift card. As she’s handing me the card and apologizing again, a pick up truck pulls up in the parking spot in front of me and the employee says “oh, I think that’s the car I gave your order to.” A man gets out and says something to the employee and starts giving her bags.
Here’s the problem - the employee wants to load the groceries straight from the back of this stranger’s pickup truck into my car. I’m not happy. I want the groceries being reshopped from the store, not groceries that have been home with this man, unpacked in his house, repacked into his truck, and brought back. I have no idea how long he’s had the food. I have no idea how long the refrigerated and frozen items have been out of cold storage. The boxes of pantry goods are all beat up. Some of the cans are dented.
My thought process was, if a person returned groceries to a store, the store wouldn’t be able to resell the groceries, esp. cold stuff. This doesn’t seem any different to me - someone has taken the groceries home and returned them to the store.
The employee is acting like I am absolutely bonkers because I don’t want the groceries out of the truck.
So, wwtpd? Would you have taken the groceries out of the stranger’s truck?

Dry goods and household products, yes, but not the refrigerated or frozen items.

Oh heck no! I would not accept the returned order, for all the reasons you list. I’m also not going to stand in a parking lot and verify that every item is actually in those bags.

I agree with you. Im not going to take food that has been in someone else's possession and brought back. I'd have them cancel my order before agreeing to take groceries from a strangers vehicle.

No, I won't have taken the groceries and I'm sure a senior manager at the store would have seen the legal implications immediately.
The store has lost sight of proper storage and safety of the produce when they gave the order to the truck customer, and if you or your family got ill from the food well, the store opens themselves to legal action.

I would not have taken the groceries from the man’s car. I would have waited for my order to be re-shopped. I have the worst experiences with Target pick up and really dislike my local Target’s limited grocery selection, I actively avoid using it unless I only need non-perishable items.
Every time I have done pick up inside or to my car it seems like the area where they keep the shopped orders is absolute chaos. I’m not surprised they gave the order to the wrong person. I worked retail for nearly a decade so I have a lot of sympathy and patience for employees but I’m not impressed with any pick up or shop for me services if I need more than 2-3 items.

I normally pick up from target and don’t have any problems, it seems to be just this one target in my area that often has problems. My regular target is fantastic. And our targets have a full grocery store inside, so it’s where I do all my grocery shopping.

You don't know what happened with frozen/refrigerated stuff. You don't know that the guy isn't some psycho who adulterated your food, maybe even in anger for getting the wrong order. (I know that's unlikely, but still...) And you don't have a verification that all the correct items are in there.
I'm usually a go with the flow, be kind and nice to the employee, don't rock the boat kind of person. I wouldn't accept the order from the guy's truck. And as someone else pointed out, the store would have a huge legal potential legal issue, so I'm sure that's not their policy!

That’s happened to me 2x at Kroger. Once I was given the wrong order, made it home (about 5 minutes) turned around and went back. Another time someone else was given my order. And yes, I accepted the bags from the other car.
Groceries go through a lot different hands before they’re shipped to the store, at the store, etc. Anyone can screw with the packages on the shelves before they’re sold. I guess I just don’t see the big deal. I would be a little more leery if I had a lot of refrigerated or frozen items that could spoil if not kept cold.

I'm another one that is a "no" in not accepting the groceries. One being that your cold items would have been out longer than they should and second, no telling, maybe he sabatoged them because he was pissed he had to bring them back. Probably not, but darn, that was a huge mistake on their part and yeah, they owed you a gift card.

You're right. They should give you the new order and then restock the non-perishables of the returned order assuming that is what they would have done if you had already come and gone.

Absolutely NOT. Who knows what this man did with the groceries or how long he had them. You are not obligated to accept them. I would contact management and suggest that the "pickers" be retrained and taught not to try to give refrigerated items to the original buyer in a situation like this. I appreciate that the man returned with everything (assumably) but you don't know him and cannot trust that they were kept at the right temp.

FWIW, I emailed Target customer service and they made it right. They refunded me in full, and let me keep the stuff I didn’t mind (like laundry detergent), and sent me a gift card.
I’m satisfied with the outcome.
I’m just taken aback that the pick up area employee acted like I was absolutely crazy.
I’ll stick to my regular Target from now on, no matter what’s out of stock.

What would stop them from taking the returned groceries from the truck back into the store, rebagging them, and bringing them right back out to you? The boxes were all bent and beat up, so I definitely would have been able to tell on those. But this is why I ultimately opted for a refund.

I am surprised you trust any store to have the refrigerated items and frozen kept properly for a pick up order. I used grocery PU back in the 70s (from a large Target) but have never done it in "modern times." I worry about the frozen or refrigerated items.

If I can pick up ice cream and it’s still frozen when I get home, with no ice crystals to indicate thawing and refreezing, then the rest of the order is probably good, too.

I'm giving the man in the truck props for bringing the items back. I admire his honesty.
The Target employee was probably young and didn't think about the frozen and refrigerated foods.
I'm glad it all worked out for you.
