Democrat Mary Peltola won the special election for Alaska’s only U.S. House seat on Wednesday, besting a field that included Republican Sarah Palin, who was seeking a political comeback in the state where she was once governor.
Peltola, who is Yup’ik and turned 49 on Wednesday, will become the first Alaska Native to serve in the House and the first woman to hold the seat. She will serve the remaining months of the late Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young’s term. Young held the seat for 49 years before his death in March.

This made my day. I truly wish Sarah Palin would fade permanently into oblivion. Bonus that Alaska elected a Democrat.

The best comment I have seen thus far on Twitter was "I wonder if Putin can hear Palin crying?" because she always talked about seeing Russia from her home. 🙄

That is fantastic!!! I hope she retains the seat come November. That is amazing that she is the first woman to hold the seat, but not surprising since the other guy was elected 49 years ago.

I just woke up to this news! woo-hoo! And, her predecessor who had the job for 49 years is a prime example of why terms limits for Congress would be a good thing.

What was the % of her win? I have read several reports about the win, but no one ever reports "by __ percentage points" or "barely won" etc.
It is a bit overwhelming that the final election will be in 2 months.

I read that 29% that voted for Begich chose Peltola as their 2nd choice (plus 20% left 2nd choice blank), which I think is a fabulous jab at Palin!
Now hopefully Peltola wins the general election, too!

You're welcome. Wasn't a big win percentage wise but still a big win as a Democrat won after 49 years if the same Republican.

Isn't it great! I love that Palin lost!
Crossing my fingers for her for the next election though, wow that was close.
I'm worried that her win is going to fire up any Republicans that didn't vote in this election to come out in droves. Come on Alaska Democrats, keep the momentum going!

Apparently Sen Tom Cotton of AR is pitching a fit, calling ranked choice voting a scam. I'm pretty sure the ranked choice voting in Alaska is due to policy by the state GOP. Does this mean he agrees that Trump should never have been elected? Tom Cotton is big mad."This is the first time Alaskans used the ranked-choice voting system after voting to adopt it in 2020. Voters pick their member of Congress by ranking the candidates, and a write-in candidate if they choose to do so, in order of preference. If a candidate wins a majority of votes on the first round, he or she wins the race. But if no candidate receives a majority of the vote, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated, and his or her supporters’ second-choice votes will go to the remaining candidates. The rounds continue until two candidates are left, and the candidate with the most votes wins. As of Thursday morning, with 93% of votes counted in the ranked-choice results, Peltola defeated Palin 51.5% to 48.5%. Palin also criticized the system after losing, saying in a statement that it was a "mistake" that was originally "sold as the way to make elections better reflect the will of the people." But now, she said, Alaska and the rest of America see "the exact opposite is true."

That's pretty close I wonder how many of the registered voters actually voted percentage wise since it was a special election and only for two months I would expect it to be low and not necessarily who will get voted in next time but it is a good sign but it could just rile up the republicans.

Hard to believe that man served with all the damn whinging he does When I got the alert last night, I was beyond thrilled that Palin lost. The thought of having to hear her special brand of word salad again was enough to have me thinking of moving into a bunker somewhere. Let’s just hope this holds for the November election. I feel pretty certain the House chambers aren’t capable of holding all the stupid that a Palin, Greene, Boebert coalition would entail
