Are you part of the outdoor water ban starting on Tuesday?
There are people on nextdoor in my area losing their ever loving minds about this. They’re refusing to do anything to reduce their water usage because it’s not their fault. They’re not understanding that this is a crack that needs to be repaired.
Im just shocked and amused by how angry people are.
I don’t think it’s that big of deal - in my area most lawns aren’t looking so good right now anyway and I would rather they fix this then possibly have the whole pipeline break someday.
Backround - We’ve been asked to not water outside and to conserve inside water usage. This is not drought related. A major pipeline needs repair and the alternate supply can only handle a limited supply of water. This impacts about 4 million people.

It turns out I am impacted. I’m a bit annoyed because the local news kept naming affected cities and it always sounded like cities north of me or parts of LA city proper. My city just posted the notice with an all inclusive list and the whole southeast county area is impacted. I believe this starts in 2 days and I’m not seeing much chatter about it.

I think that there wasn’t much targeted publicity which I think is a major fail.
I first read about it on nextdoor a few weeks ago. Lately, I’ve been seeing more info but there is confusion with some cities.
I have no issue with the lawn dying off (it’s not looking great this year) or conserving inside.

I’m not in LA county but I will say it pisses me off that my neighbors across the street water their lawn 3 or 4 times per day. They have bright green grass while everyone else, me included, have dead brown grass. It’s soooooo unnecessary especially in the drought situation we are in. I have been tempted to report them but I haven’t…yet.

Are they going to make the golf courses go without water for two weeks too? I doubt that very much.

I'm in OC and this is the first I've heard of it so I assume we are not part of it.

I know that your situation is for repairs and not a drought, but I saw similar reactions when we went through a very long drought with very strict and tough water restrictions years ago. Yes, some people did lose their minds, and refused to comply with the restrictions. Some of those people were fined (if caught) and some even had their water supply reduced to a trickle! It was awesome. I read about one guy who had his water supply reduced because he continued to hose down his concrete driveway.

You want green grass, move somewhere where it rains enough to keep the grass green. Personally I would be thrilled to be able to decorate with gravel and cactuses and succulents and not need to worry about mowing. I never water my lawn ever. By the end of summer it's a bit brown but that to me is part of the cycle of the seasons. We have plenty of water here where I live in GA but I still don't see a need to waste it on grass or excessive car washing, etc. I can't even stand plants that need constant watering, they're annoying.

Are they going to make the golf courses go without water for two weeks too? I doubt that very much. I thought all golf courses have to use reclaimed water? I am so happy to see more and more neighbors switching to drought resistant landscaping. I don't think the drought restrictions have ever been lifted in the time (16 years) we have lived here and can't imagine trying to keep a lawn green.

I’m not sure about pools. I know that covers are required but don’t know anyone who covers theirs. There are studies that show a covered, well maintained pool actually requires less water over the long run that keeping a green lawn.

I realize this restriction is because a pipe needs fixed. However, those grumbling on Next Door may need to buckle up. Lake Powell and Lake Mead are both very low and some of that water goes to LA. There may be further restrictions because of the low lake levels and the overall dry conditions.

The city I live in receives a very small amount of water from MWD so we aren't affected. We have our own wells. However we are under restrictions to only water twice a week and if you empty your pool, you cannot refill it.
What really burns my hide is that the lawn in front of our city hall, police dept & library are LUSH GREEN. As for our golf course, I believe they are watering the greens and not the fairways. The purple pipes (recycled water) infrastructure hasn't been built up to our city from the reclamation facility yet.

I am not impacted by this since I live in Orange County, but if I were, I would rather give up my daily shower than to let my flowers die out front. I have been babying them along since putting them in and there has been more than once that I thought they were gonners in this insane heat. One area was totally wilted and I thought they were going to die. I felt guilty for not getting outside sooner to get some water on them. To my surprise, they rallied after being given a bit of water the following day. My flower beds are small. Just enough to add some nice color to make the house appealing while it was being shown. I have removed all flower pots from the back of the house near the pool. I figured the pool was its own attraction and the pots would just take that much more water and time to maintain. I decided to focus on 4 small areas in my front yard instead.
I have been setting my alarm to get up and get outside to get things watered before the sun comes up. Stopping now would just make all of that effort wasted. I have a pool. I would happily give up my daily shower and jump in the pool to rinse off instead just to provide water for my flowers. I no longer have a lawn. I killed that off a couple of years ago to plant drought tolerant plants because I knew our water was more and more precious and I didn't want to waste any of it. Heck, I even shut the water off during my showers while I am soaping up and shampooing my hair rather than see it going down the drain unused.
