A teacher went running super early near the U. of Memphis and her abduction was caught on camera. They found a body and are trying to identify it now. I think what is most shocking to me is that they have video footage of her being forced into a car, they have a suspect in custody, but they haven't found her. On TikTok this weekend, I saw several videoes of women showing how they prepare to run in a city - Apple Air Tags in their bra so people can track them, pepper spray & whistles, checking in with people every 30-40 min on long runs, leaving route information (I think this is super smart too). www.cnn.com/2022/09/06/us/memphis-missing-teacher-tuesday/index.html

It is really scary as women that we have to do all that for what should be a very normal activity. In addition to walking with my German Shepherd, i carry a stun gun that looks like a flashlight. I also separate my belongings so that I don't lose everything I'm carrying in the event of a mugging. I know many people around here who carry (I am in Texas after all).

Yes it’s horrible! When I would run I would carry pepper spray, use one headphone and send my gps location to my mom and sister. It’s sad what we have to do to feel safe. It’s not the same for guys. Women should be able to run when they want, wear what they want and feel safe but the truth is, we don’t. I alter my choices to do so. My bil was shocked why I didn’t run before the sun comes up…he never realized how unsafe a woman can feel.
I feel for her family and kids. Hoping the body they found, is not hers. Though I also feel bad for saying that, because someone else lost their life. Just tragic.

Such a sad case. I understand the police have found a body, although they haven’t identified it yet. Hopefully, she’s still alive, but it doesn’t sound good.
When I heard she was from a wealthy family, I hoped it was a kidnapping for ransom and that she would be found alive. However it sounds like the suspect abducted another woman twenty years ago, so it’s probably not a kidnapping for ransom.

I’m sad for her boys that they will grow up without their mom.
Thank goodness the police appear confident that the guy who took her is arrested. It was a bonus that his brother was also arrested on drug charges. That’s at least some that won’t be ingested.

The body has been identified as her.
Also, I think the previous kidnapping charges were for a man, not a woman.

I have a running friend who is from there and she'd posted to our group about it. It's devastating. I need to check on her but Eliza's poor family will be in my thoughts on my next miles.
My spouse doesn't get why I will choose the treadmill a lot of the time or that I won't go out alone. I do a lot of trail running and never go without a friend/s and a dog.

All my spidey senses are tingling with this case. Nothing about her abduction seems random. It may not be random. He may have watched her over days or weeks. Apparently she ran the same route every day. Another thing we should never do as women. If you go for a walk or run, change your route. It's so unfair that we have to do this, but there are some evil people out there. It's such a sad ending. She did not deserve this. My heart goes out to her loved ones.

The suspect had just been released from jail in 2020 after serving 20 years of a 24 year sentence for kidnapping.

I just saw this story....ugh, and I hate these stories. So much we have to think about that men don't. And you all have some good tips, I always feel relatively ok on my short walk around my suburb, but I probably need to take some more precaution.
From what I read she ran by the apartment complex where suspect allegedly lived. You never know who is watching.
Sorry for her and her family.

As a runner who often logs early morning miles, this angers and upsets me so much. We should be able to run when and where we want, but we can’t. I regularly meet up with a crew, but this morning ran 8 dark and rainy miles solo before work. No headphones. Carried pepper spray. Always aware of my surroundings. It is so stressful sometimes it’s hard to focus on the run itself.
Praying for the friends and family who are affected by this senseless crime.

Very sad case.
I run and walk constantly by myself. On trails and super urban. I am way more worried about getting hit by a car or spraining an ankle than a stranger abduction. The chances of that must be less than being hit by lightning.

Yes. I cried for her and her family. Such evil is nearly unfathomable. Followed this closely. Women “should” be able to move around freely at any hour and without fear! But the fact is, we can’t. I’ve seen people say “run for Liza” and show themselves in risky running situations. That won’t help and could get someone else killed. I don’t know what the answer is but I grieve for this woman I didn’t know. I’m heartbroken at the loss of this bright beautiful mama, with the precious family and little boys she loved. She was their world I’m sure. 💔

Sidenote: Even with pepperspray, tracking, etc., I'm still SO cautious (scared) whenever I go out alone here, even in the daytime. I don't think I'd ever walk or run alone. Nope.
Prayers to Eliza's children and family. Such horrible news all weekend!

I agree that based on what I've read, it doesn't sound random. Now obviously there's a lot of media reports swirling around right now and you can never know what is actually factual, but the article I was reading today said that the man who was kidnapped 22 years ago was a lawyer (he has since died) and he worked at the same law firm as this lady's uncle - Michael Keeney, who is the family's lawyer and spokesperson.
If that's true then it seems like an odd co-incidence that a lawyer working there now has a family member kidnapped by the same man who kidnapped a lawyer who worked there 22 years ago.
Perhaps there was a plan to hold her for ransom, but he couldn't control her and ended up killing her.

What kind of evil person is up at 4:30 a.m. looking for victims? It is just unimaginable.

I feel horrible for that poor woman. In theory women should be able to run anywhere and anytime that they want to without fearing for their life. I totally believe that, BUT... anyone who runs at 4:30 am in a public park is playing fast and loose with their life.
I have friends who run around the lake in my neighborhood and I worry that something is going to happen to them in broad daylight. There are so many places on that lake path where someone can grab you - never to be seen again. To me its like stepping into traffic with your eyes closed - not smart.

I saw today that her autopsy shows she was murdered by a gunshot to the back of the head. AWFUL. I hope she wasn't tortured (more) before she was killed.

I live in Memphis and her abduction and murder still has been rattled. I used to go out exploring, hiking all the time by myself. I hardly leave the house now. I hate not feeling safe and I hate feeling like I'm trapped. I bought a new waist belt that my gun fits in and I wear it when I do leave the house. It sucks that I feel I have to carry at all times just to be safe.

Although her case is certainly noteworthy - and feels very personal to you being local - it is indeed something that can happen anywhere (especially in the US). Take reasonable precautions, my friend, but live your life. Go back out. As an aside, this case has a 'small world' connotation for me. Turns out Eliza was a cousin to one of my son's fraternity brothers.
