Looking to start using some paste with stencils and would like to know what brands you use and why.
I want to play around a bit more and this looks fun.
Thanks!

Quite a few companies have high quality pastes, and my favorite is TCW—the Crafters Workshop. Their Light & Fluffy is a go-to. It’s matte, but they also have shiny pastes. Their butters are so highly pigmented that the tiniest dot will color a big glop of white paste. Or you can use the intensely colored butters on their own, or mix them with each other. There’s a great chart showing combos. Their customer service is top notch if ordering directly from them, but other on-line shops carry their lines. Once an order from got lost en transit so they sent me another. When on the phone we talked about the cicada invasion and I said I loved cicadas. The rep put a butterfly stencil in the replacement box with a note apologizing they didn’t have a cicada. And when the original box showed up they told me to keep or donate it. Mixing your own colors with white paste and ink from ink pads, re-inkers, watercolors, anything with color works well and is really fun. Just a white like White & Fluffy or a shiny one, plus your colors. store.thecraftersworkshop.com/ and many shops. Others that have worked well are Goldens (more expensive), Ranger, including Distress, Dreamweaver—really nice, soft metallics, Faber Castell though they may have stopped making them. The only ones I’ve had trouble with drying out fairly quickly are Nuvo, though I’ve only tried a couple types of theirs. Any of them can dry out and putting plastic wrap or Press ‘N Seal over the top before closing helps.

I only had a couple jars of paste when I found this video. Now I make my own. The initial outlay is a bit more but the basic pâtés and gels will last a long time and you don’t have to find space to store all those jars that will probably dry out before you can use them up.

I’ve made some basic paste, just enough to realize I’m not a fan. I was glad I didn’t buy any. Buying in small quantities, mixing your own colors, and using press n’ seal to keep the jars from drying out are all the tips I’ve heard. I don’t know if regular cling wrap works as well. If you need press n seal, it’s pretty pricey so message me and I’ll send you a piece! I have more than enough for my die cut arrangement purposes.

Jeebus that lady does not know how to cut to the chase. For anyone who's curious, she's DIY'ing with Golden/BASIC Extra Heavy/Heavy Acrylic Gel Mediums plus ink. Just add your own glitter / mica powder / colours. Great tip, terrible packaging. I'd be livid if sealed product was dried out like that less than a year after purchase. What a waste, especially since the stuff is so un-recyclable.

Thanks for all the info.
I think I'm going to try a jar to see if I like the process before making my own.
I found the stencil butter.
Curious about the lunar paste from Ranger. Their products are usually top notch and they're a little cheaper.

I rarely use pastes/glazes/etc, so only have Vicki Boutin CreativeFX Glaze in silver & iridescent (& use VB Art Crayons to tint iridescent if desired). Both the glazes & art crayons were purchased a couple years ago on clearance at Tuesday Morning.

The lunar paste is the one that’s caught my eye a few times lately, probably because I follow Simon on IG and it’s very pretty. I’ve seen him rub it onto dry embossed textures with his fingers which is about as messy as I get. It looks fabulous on black.

I really like Simon Hurley’s lunar paste It’s soft and easy to spread over a stencil- not sticky like some pastes Colours are vibrant and shimmery Also can use as a rub over top of embossed cardstock or dilute as a watercolour or splatter I had several brands including so called “ artists” ones I coloured with reinkers . I’ve chucked all of them except for a plain white in gloss and matte and kept the lunar pastes only I’m a big fan of these Colours are nice too

Love the lines from Picket Fence. The glimmer pastes are amazing. I met a lady from The Crafters Workshop who said to give the pastes a spray of distilled water before the press-n-seal. I haven’t tried it, but I intend to the next time I use some. I’ve found the Nuvo and Gina K dry out the quickest.

What's nice about white is it can easily be tinted to any color. And it’s extremely easy.
Smoosh an ink pad on a mat, put down a little glob of paste and mix. Or wet watercolor with a brush, put on the mat and add paste. Or put paste on the mat and add a drop of re-inker, mix and apply through the stencil. Want it darker? Add another drop and apply. And then another and it’s ombré.

This sounds really fun. So excited. It is fun! My favorite thing. Well, along with heat embossing and blending Oxides. Coincidentally, an email from scrapbook.com just arrived and the free gift today is TCW turquoise stencil butter. There’s a short video on the page about different ways to use it—thinned like water color, used for backgrounds, etc. www.scrapbook.com/store/cf-tcw9064.htmlETA The video must be a little old, not that it matters. She says it’s a new product, buts it’s been around for maybe a couple years?

A tip for preserving your paste: Place some plastic wrap over the top of the jar before putting the lid back on. "Trap" the plastic inside. That will keep the moisture in so that the paste doesn't dry out as quickly. You can also spritz a little water into the jar before you put the plastic over it. Distilled water is preferred, but I use regular water, and it seems to be OK. I was actually able to save a few jars.

This sounds really fun. So excited. It is fun! My favorite thing. Well, along with heat embossing and blending Oxides. My mixed media soulmate! I can sit at my craft table all day and do any one of the above. Playing with color in any formulation is my thing. I like Picket Fence pastes. I haven't tried butter but now that I know about the scrapbook.com special I may **need** to buy something today.

I just saw on Scrapbook.com that you can get a free stencil butter in turquoise if you place an order in the next two days. The info is under 'coupons' at the top. While turquoise would not be my first choice in color, if you wanted to try it for free, it could be a good way to get some if you need other items.

Kismet, I think it's called. I was thinking that's a good crossover color between Fall lines and Halloween. Now I need some stencils so please spam me with links. Why are they so expensive? I need to go to Michaels. I'd go today but I live in a college town and there's a game today so I can't go near that part of town. Too much traffic.

And a white would give you a wide range combined with the turquoise. The first time I used TCW butter to tint white I added what I thought was a little bit. Nope. It tinted my glob of white almost as dark as the dark butter. I had to keep adding white and finally gave up, though used some of that color. It’s so intensely pigmented only a tiny dot will color the white. For stencils, if you go back to scrapbook.com, put stencils in the search box, using the drop-down menu on the right you can sort by price. There are a lot for $2.25, $3.00, etc. Layering stencils are fun too, but maybe that’s for later. A Colorful Life Designs only makes stencils but they’re not inexpensive. TCW has tons, lots of companies now.

Why are they so expensive? I need to go to Michaels. If you have a local dollar store with craft stuff, take a peek there for stencils. They won't have the biggest variety but even a few will give you something to practice with and won't be costly.

I'd have suggested AliEx first too previously, but stencils have crept up into the 2-3$ range as of late and (at least in my local area) the dollar store now is the least expensive option. But if you want a bigger variety without paying an arm and a leg and are willing to wait for mail delivery, it's the place to go.

I bought a roll of Oracal stencil material at Michaels the other day. I am going to attempt using my silhouette to cut some. Silhouette sells their own stencil material but I prefer Oracal on vinyl so I thought I'd start with theirs and see how it goes.

I thought I'd give a little update on my stencil fiasco. This shop on AEX has stencils: stencilsIf you buy only one it's like $4 but I added a few to my cart and shipping only goes up a little with each additional one. I could not find anything I liked at my Dollar Tree. I'll check out the Family and the General later this week as I also need a cauldron.
Also, mom please let us know how your stencil cutting goes.

I've really moved away from buying any of the coloured gels or pastes. I now have a clear gel from Golden and some Golden white modeling paste. I tint them as needed with a variety of things (mica powder, any powdered pigments like Lindy's Magicals, reinker, or even a swipe of color from an ink pad). The clear gel is transparent (obviously) and takes shimmery effects well. The white is very opaque so the pigments tend to lighten a bit when I mix them in. While the Golden products have been more expensive, they have had a pretty good shelf life for me. I do have a bit of Crafter's Workshop Stencil Butter in pearl white that I plan on trying soon.
I have thrown out a lot of coloured pastes because I just don't use them enough. Now I tint just what I need for a layout by mixing it on my craft mat or a paper plate. It allows me to get exactly the colour I want, and it ends up being much less waste for me.

Well this was a product I didn’t know I needed. 😂 I watched a video to see what it even was and then bought a crafter workshop jar of crimson stencil butter from Amazon. I bought crimson since I wanted it for DD. I probably wouldn’t really want any other colors anyway so this will be a fun thing to play with for dd and my new AE stencils. I don’t care if I could maybe get it for less somewhat else- with prime shipping it’s probably cheaper than a random order somewhere else + shipping. They only had 3 left so I didn’t want to miss out.
