UPDATE - Thank you all for what to watch for. This morning it is feeling much better, almost no pain and what there is, is very tolerable, like a 1-2. The swelling has gone down a little bit and is more generalized, yesterday it was very central. It is turning a lovely shade of dark purple also. DH is doing his best to be at my beck and call. Again, thank you all.
Last year DH and I would go for Sunday morning hikes/walks. Locations were within an hour of home, but we enjoyed the drive and the hikes so totally worth it. This year our schedules did not really allow it until this weekend. We were going to do a night of dispersed camping and then a new trail hike. While driving our truck started acting up, possible transmission issue so we abandoned that plan. This morning went to a much closer trail, but new to us. Just got started and I rolled my left ankle and landing directly on my right knee. I was able to get myself to our truck, got home, iced it and was being pampered. Suddenly, hours later, I got an extremely sharp pain and obvious increased swelling. It was so bad I had DH call an ambulance because I could not put any pressure on my leg or move it at all. Seriously, this was the worst paint I can ever remember experiencing. X-rays showed nothing broken or damaged, just a very bad bruise. A leg brace, crutches and some really good pain pills and I was on my way home. I still don't totally understand how it went from mildly sore and stiff to me screaming in pain, but nothing is broken. Luckily I work for a great company that will let me work from home because I can hardly move and no way I can drive. I was really not meant to go for a simple walk this weekend.

Did they check you for a blood clot? Trauma can also cause clots and I would be worried about that. If the swelling and pain continue to get worse, please go back in.

An obvious sharp pain with immediate swelling and then a bruise sounds like a vessel burst and then sealed itself off, resulting in a hematoma (blood trapped under the skin). Sometimes the bleeding from the vessel compartmentalizes itself, so it quits bleeding on its own. (If it hadn't, you'd know by continual swelling)
I would assume (hope?) they did an ultrasound of that leg. If not, call your doctor Monday for follow up.

It could be an undisplaced tibial plateau fracture. They can sometimes be hard to see or may not show up on an x-ray immediately. If the pain doesn't go away you should have another x-ray in a week or two (as after a bit of time and movement the fracture can become more obvious).

I'd ask for an MRI. Could have a torn ligament.
When I completely tore my ACL in May, the pain was there but hours later was super bad to where I had to go to the ER. I was given a full leg knee immobilizer and had to be off my leg.
Torn connective tissues don't show up on xrays.

Ouch, I'm so sorry this happened. I'm glad your Dh is being so attentive. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Just an X-Ray to see if it was a broken bone does not seem thorough enough to me for pain that had you arrive in an ambulance. Our lovely nurse peas are steering you in the right direction.
