I was browsing the Silhouette Design Store just a few minutes ago and saw a file that I really liked. It said, “Broom Parking Only,” and was by Jillibean Soup. I have downloaded that phrase before, so I thought I should look at my Silhouette library to see how similar it was to any other that might be similar. I found the same one in my library. But the one I had seen on the Silhouette site was supposed to be new. I checked the file numbers. Different numbers. Then I realized that the one in my library had simple flourishes on the side, while the “new” file that was essentially identical didn’t have the flourishes. Those flourishes could easily be removed with a couple of mouse clicks (and obviously were) and they would be the same design.
I used to design cutting files for a different company. I know that there is pressure to keep churning out new files all the time, but this tactic has the potential for cheating customers. I have accidentally bought files that were the same, or nearly identical. They also had different numbers. I wasn’t happy, but now I understand how it happened. If it has a different number, your software assumes it is a different design, and you can end up accidentally paying for duplicates.
With my subscription, I pay about 8 cents per design, so it’s not worth complaining about to me, but for those of you who use credits or pay full price, you might want to double check before purchasing, to make sure you aren’t buying a duplicate design.

TFS, this is a good reminder for me! As someone who has bought duplicates of physical embellishments in the past, I feel like I am probably just a mouse-click away from buying duplicate designs from the Silhouette Design Store. I'll try and remember to check before I buy next time. Also I hate that they've made it so we even have to check in the first place - seems a bit on the shady side, because they probably figure most people won't check or won't even think twice about it.

I think the fault for this is on the Designer. They are the ones responsible for submitting new designs. Removing a couple of flourishes isn’t releasing a new design IMO, although it will bring an older design forward. I feel like it’s a bit dishonest, and customers won’t be happy if they realize they essentially bought the same design as one they already had.
