Talk about their clients all the time.
Today I went with a friend who is fluent in Vietnamese but she didnt tell them that.
Afterwards we were having coffee and she was telling me what they said. They would all be awesome poker players. Not one indication that they were saying all those things. Including from the tech who was reshaping my nails 🤣🤣 and who got a very nice tip for all the time she spent getting them just right. We were laughing over whether I would have tipped her as much of I knew what she was saying. Lol I would have

Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Elaine takes Frank Costanza to the nail salon to see what they were saying in Korean about her!

Really, did you think otherwise?
I think of the Seinfeld episode every time I get my nails done.
I also think of a story of a Latin woman who looked Caucasian. She was in an elevator with men who thought she did not understand Spanish. They talked about her body in crude terms. When she got to her floor, she turned and in fluent Spanish gave them a humiliating reply.

I used to get my nails done in a salon where the ladies were all Vietnamese ... my mum still goes there ... this is going on 15 years ... they talk to each other in Vietnamese ... just regular talk as far as I could tell ... if it is anything more than that, who cares, they do a good job! It's a private business so they can do what they want ...

I've always felt that they need to make a sitcom about a nail salon. The techs and a few regular customers would be the main charachters. Think of all the storylines!!!

Last year at track some Haitian students were talking smack about the coach in French after she reprimanded them for something bad they did. She whips around and says in perfect French, btw I’m fluent and I know every word you just said. Then promptly sent them home.

I was in a nail salon one time getting my nails done there was an American man in the next chair not paying attention to anything, or so it seemed. He got up to pay and started speaking Vietnamese to the techs. Apparently he was in Vietnam during the war and spoke fluently. I thought the techs were going to pass out. It was actually very, very funny to see their faces.

When I get my nails done the ladies don’t talk much to each other - but if it makes their job more entertaining to talk about me I say go for it lol

I often visit a Vietnamese owned nail salon. It doesn’t bother me for staff there to converse among themselves in the language most comfortable for them anymore than it does when I visit a foreign country and don’t understand the language.
I’m actually going to the wedding of one of the co-owners this coming Sunday. She’s marrying a man who works in my husband’s office. If is to be a traditional Vietnamese ceremony even though the groom is not Vietnamese. I’m really looking forward to it. I love new experiences.

But you have to tell us what she said bout you! Well, the tech doing my nails was sitting next to the one who did them last time. Last time was a hot mess and i had to fix them myself when i got home. So the conversation was essentially that if i am going to be so difficult, i should just do them myself. As i sat there i watched the tech who did my nails last time, make a hot mess of her current clients nails. The client didn't seem to notice or care. Apparently there was major complaining between the two techs but honestly, I don't care. I figure for the price we pay and the tip i add on, my nails better be shaped right

I watched a TikTok of someone getting their nails done and had a translation app on her phone. They were talking about how fat she was. She really felt awful afterwards. Kind of the laughing, but sad tears sad.

I saw this online and this thread came to mind. upload photosI actually think it's terrible that they talk about people right in front of them like that. I wouldn't go to another country and do that. Talking in their own language is fine; not making fun of people, though.

We have friends that drive Amish. I've driven for them several times. They all speak English, but speak Dutch aming themselves. One time I was driving a van full and they were all talking when I hear the word driver! Obviously, they talking about me!

I've spent enough time on Reddit to know that wherever you are in the world and whatever language you're speaking, never assume that the people around you don't understand. People get caught out all the time!

Kind of the laughing, but sad tears sad. My friend did this and I guess she just opened the app, hit translate, and it started translating on speakerphone! She thought it would give the translation in text, but noooo... it did not. She got so embarrassed that she couldn't figure out how to turn it off! But she did leave a very generous tip afterward.

Currently sitting here getting my toes done. One thing I like about this salon is that the techs don’t sit there and have long conversations with each other. I dislike that no matter what language they do it in - I’m here to relax and constant chatter doesn’t help with that.
But yeah, they’d be unwise in Houston to assume that none of their customers understand any Vietnamese.

I’ve had techs talk out loud in Vietnamese while doing my nails and there’s no one around to hear them. I wonder what they are telling themself.

People get caught out all the time! 100% this. I would never be so rude as to talk smack about a client like that who was paying me for a service, especially if they could hear me. You never know who might be listening that actually understands what you’re saying.
