Your mom's sweetness was SO thoughtful and helpful. I always wanted to leave behind a note with a bottle of champagne in the refrigerator. I also wanted to leave any booklets on the house and appliances we had + local delivery (food) places. I never got to do that. My home ended up going to a shortsale, so everything was rushed and crazy.
When we/I bought the house, we had no electric for 24 hours, so I wish we would have been smart enough to bring paper items and flashlights or candles. Still, we had an little party with my sisters and their husbands all coming over to surprise us (in the dark). The guys drove and found a pizza place and we ate outside on our deck. It was memorable, even if we had nothing there yet!

We left a folder with all the warranty books etc. for appliances, made sure the house was very clean and left a bottle of wine and a card. We 'met' the people who bought the house several months later at a neighbors party - the buyers said nothing and completely ignored us. We were a little hurt....they were not even remotely nice.

We just sold a house and left manuals, TP in the bathrooms, a fire extinguisher, and some leftover Trex from the deck redo. I though about leaving something like a watercolor of the house but they were PITAs towards the end so I didn't. I had also kept a log and info tags from the plants I had planted and the new owner appreciated that.
The people we bought from left a bin of stuff about the house like the binder of info from the builder and manuals and an extra well filter.

The next to last house we bought, the sellers left us a small bottle of champagne and some camellia blooms from the yard! It was a thoughtful touch that was very welcoming. This is the only house out of five that we have bought that left anything.
Our last house was new, sold by a builder, and he didn't leave anything except appliance manuals and warranties.

I've never moved, and I'll probably die in this house - but the previous owner was here for the home inspection, and he had wine and a cheese tray for us at that time. That was pretty nice. We were a young newlywed couple, and as we walked through the house, he pointed and asked if I wanted various items, like the washer/dryer/fridge/kitchen table/couch. It was all fairly bland - but awesome for a young newlywed couple who literally had nothing (we both had only ever lived with our parents before buying our married home). The owner's significant other had passed away, and he was moving back to the midwest to take care of his elderly parents. He didn't want to take anything with him so it was win/win. When we got the keys, we found that he left all the garage items (all the gardening tools, power tools, etc.). We were really lucky. He left one sheet of paper with the trash and street sweeper schedule, and a list of dates that utilities were being turned off (this part was really helpful). He placed post-it notes all over the house (this light turns on x, etc.) A lot of these switches were obvious, but it was still sweet.
