I don't upgrade just because there's a new model. Case in point I have an early 2012 MacBook Pro. It's still working well after I added memory and a SSD a few years ago. Only reason I'm planning to replace it next year is that I can no longer update the software. I replaced my iPhone 6s last year for the same reason.

If I had all the $ in the world, I'd buy the latest & greatest all the time. I love tech & I hope I don't ever become afraid to play around with it and figure it out on my own.

I love technology and would love to always have the latest and greatest, but I’m too cheap to cough up the big bucks for stuff right away. I like to hang onto stuff until it can’t be updated anymore. I inherited my MIL’s 2009 MacBook Pro and used it until 2020, then I upgraded to a 2019. I’m still using my iPhone 8 but want to upgrade to a 13 pretty soon now that the 14’s are out. I just updated my iPad Air 2 to an Air 4.
I too think it’s important for kids to be fluent with technology. Yes, today’s tech will be obsolete in another ten years, but what they use today will be the springboard to what comes next. My kid started to learn keyboarding in first grade and she creates amazing art with her iPad. She is self taught and is light years ahead of where I am.

I tend to buy the newest option available but I keep my things for a really long time. My car I bought new in 2007, my laptop is from 2014, my last camera I bought in 2015, etc. The only exception would be something so brand new that I don't feel it's supported well enough or I'm not sure all the kinks have been worked out of it, for those kinds of things I usually wait.

If I had the money, I would definitely be an early adopter - on the day of release. But I pretty much always wait to buy the latest model, either until my exisiting product no longer works as well or I am out of contract.
I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, which I got in December 2020. It was the latest model at the time. I got it on a 3 year plan, so I will update to the newest model in December 2023, which I assume will be the iPhone 15. If the 16 comes out in early 2024, I might wait a few extra months and get that.
I have a MacBook Pro 2109 model. I had planned to keep it for at least five years, but the screen is starting to play up, so I have been saving for a new model.
I bought a digital camera very early on, and it cost me way too much money - it was about $2000 and it wasn't even a DSLR. In retrospect I probably should have waited until the prices of digital cameras came down.
I love my Kindle. I don't understand when people say they prefer the feel and the smell (huh?) of real books. I will be happy if I never have to read a 'real' book ever again.

My objection to eBooks is not the form factor, but the DRM. (Digital Rights Management) Amazon can decide to 'unbuy' or alter your books, and poof they're gone. No company should have the right to reach into your device and take away something you've bought. I do like reading digital copies, but I usually buy a hardcopy and then Yo Ho Ho the cracked e-version. Nobody gets to tell me how to enjoy my possessions or that I can only use it on X type of hardware. Video games have many of the same issues; physical media is disappearing or simply not being issued.
Some books really do smell good though, it's the inks. Brings up happy childhood memories for me.

I don't feel like I'm an early adapter. My Lord, I can still remember sitting on the train listing to my DISCMAN (!) while everyone had ipods. I typically don't upgrade my technology until my current technology ceases to function. I especially hate upgrading my phone. HATE IT. I will hold on to my phone until I absolutely HAVE to upgrade, then I do the dance of "is this the time I finally switch to Android or just keep Apple"? Of course, the thought of learning new technology keeps me buying Apple. DH was my tech person and I've had to buy 2 laptops since he passed and it was DAUNTING for me to get them set-up. I did it but I hated every damn minute of it.

I don't understand when people say they prefer the feel and the smell (huh?) of real books OMG! I love the smell of some books! As mentioned by Embri, it is the ink. You are probably too young, but in elementary school, we used to get handouts that were printed on a mimeograph/ditto machine. The first thing we would all do when we got a handout was smell it! Yeah, that smell of fresh ink was intoxicating!

Definitely not an early adopter and sometimes the hand-me-down queen of tech/electronics. Though I may like the newest and greatest, I never buy them.
Phone is an iPhone 12, the only reason why I bought it was because my old hand me down Android was running out of space. Do have a tablet (iPad mini bought 4 years ago), eReader Kindle 7th generation (@2014), the laptop I am typing on now is from 2013. I had to get a new to me car when someone did a hit and run and my 2006 car got totaled this past spring. Would still be driving it if it wasn't totaled.
Do not have smart TV's but use a Firestick / Sling TV and a Roku / Sling TV on our 10+ years old TVs. As long as it works, I'll keep on using it.

I don’t consider myself an early adopter but I love the convenience of tech things.
All of our tvs are smart tvs. I have Wi-Fi lightbulbs, door locks and plugs controlled by Alexa. Just got the new iPhone 14 pro specifically for the camera upgrade.
My laptop is 5 years old and my iPad is dh’s hand me down from last year because he cracked the screen.
The only problem with all this Wi-Fi stuff is when there’s a power outage or a Wi-Fi outage.
I do love paper though. I love having pretty journals and love paper books from the library. It’s been years since I used my kindle. I hate that thing.
I also like anything motion detector. Especially lights.
I really like the smart thermostat too. I can change the temp from my phone at work. I also like to preheat the oven on the way home from my phone. That’s only convenient if I’ve prepped dinner ahead of time though.

I like to stay up to date, but don't buy the gadgets as soon as they come out. My iphone is an 11 and I'm thinking it's time to upgrade. I have an ipad mini that is several years old, but I don't use it too much. As long as I can update the iOS on it, I'm happy. I just bought an ereader. It's a Kindle paperwhite that is a refurbished older model that I got for $30. I like to think that I'm going to read paper books, but never end up doing it. There are plenty of free or borrowed e-books for me to read.
I want to keep up with technology and not let it pass me by. I like it and there are some really cool things, and I don't want to seem "old" by not being up to date.

I usually wait for the bugs to shake out before I adopt something, but I stay up to date with technology and software for my work. Part of my job is working on digital resources and technology in education. There’s some very cool stuff out there for science classes.

Do you have the latest and greatest? Do you buy as soon as it comes out? Wait awhile? Buy an older model? In general, when I am looking to upgrade, I buy the latest model, but I do hold on to it for a long time. My laptop is a 2015, my ipad is a 2018, and I still have an iPhone 12. I am thinking of finally getting a new laptop/desktop, but I am going to wait until at least the beginning of 2023 and see if anything new comes out. I think I've only bought one thing on release day, that was the iPhone X. You might want to wait on the laptop if you use windows. Windows 11 is very buggy and that is all that is out there right now. I would wait another year.

We still have our iPhone 11s but they are getting very slow and buggy, so we’ve preordered the 14. First time we’ve ever purchased the current model, I think. We usually buy our phones one model year old.
Not tech specifically, but cars - we don’t buy the latest or greatest. Inexpensive, reliable, and used is our preference.
We have smart TVs and I only like the Toshiba Amazon Fire TVs, so that’s what we have. They’re all several years old at this point. We have Echos, but again, they’re older models. The only other ‘smart’ things in our house are timer plugs for lamps that we use when we travel.
