Do you have the latest and greatest? Do you buy as soon as it comes out? Wait awhile? Buy an older model?
In general, when I am looking to upgrade, I buy the latest model, but I do hold on to it for a long time. My laptop is a 2015, my ipad is a 2018, and I still have an iPhone 12. I am thinking of finally getting a new laptop/desktop, but I am going to wait until at least the beginning of 2023 and see if anything new comes out. I think I've only bought one thing on release day, that was the iPhone X.

Other - I buy what's going to meet my needs. So I have a iPhone 6s and won't replace it until it stops working. And I'm still using my Cricut Expression with SCAL. But I had my computer custom built by my BIL to my specs and got the (then) newest Windows OS. I think I tend to be latest and greatest with software more than hardware though.

Beyond a smart tv, phone, laptop, and iPad, I use very little technology. TBH, it’s exhausting to keep up with it, and I have never been much for gadgets.

We aren’t a big technology household.
We all have iPhones. I don’t know what number they are. We’ll use them until they don’t work anymore and then we’ll upgrade to whichever model is the most similar to what we had.
We don’t have tablets. We don’t have ereaders. We don’t have a computer or a printer. We pay extra for appliances that are as old fashioned as possible. Our dishwasher and washing machine don’t even have circuit boards. We drive our cars until they die and can’t be repaired.
We have smart TVs. I don’t know what brand they are and don’t particularly care. My kids have gaming systems.
I don’t like technology and I don’t like change 🤷🏻♀️

I'm not into technology at all. I call myself a traditionalist. I enjoy using a paper journal and ink. I didn't get an Iphone until I literally had to-when I went on a trip to solo trip to Germany 5 years ago and needed one to use the DBapp (the German train app) to schedule and keep track of my train journeys to and from each city. Before that I had a non-smart phone and I was fine with it. I have had a desk top computer for years that I still use and enjoy. I don't have a tablet, laptop or Ipad. I borrow paper books from the library-I much prefer these to digital books even though they weigh a ton-especially the amount I check out I still use CD's to listen to music because I have a large collection and a CD player in my car, plus a great stereo. I do use Spotify occasionally (when I'm on a trip) but cancel it when I get home because I hate paying the cost of it each month-that's the extent of my digital music use.

Computer- I will buy the most upgraded and recent that I can get but NEVER first year of production of specific model- MacBook always. My most recent MacBook purchase was in 2013 when I bought a new 2012 MacBook Pro fully upgraded. It's slowing down but still does the job. I'm hoping to get another 2-3 years out of it and then I will purchased my current district owned 2021 Air when they refresh.
Ipad- most likely most recent version or one year old- I have an iPad 5 currently. Still works fine for my needs.
iphone- whatever- it's a phone. I'm rocking my 7 still. Bought it used in summer 2020. Does it's job.

In regards to my cell phone, when I'm ready to get a new one, I get the latest and greatest - regardless of when it was released.
I currently have a Note 20, which I'm holding on to as long as possible as Samsung has moved away from the Notes and I love my phone. It works perfectly fine so I won't be replacing it anytime soon. Plus I paid for it outright, and phones are expensive.
As for laptops/tablets - same story. I'll buy the best out there when it's time to purchase, but hold on to it till it dies. I did get a new Kindle earlier this year. I bought the original Kindle when it came out (BEFORE Oprah found it) and this is my 4th Kindle. I usually upgrade every 3-4 years. Battery life drives that decision.
TVs - I had my first flat screen TV for 9 years. It was a 32 inch everyone made fun of me since it was "small". I finally upgraded to a 42 inch on Black Friday in 2019 at a very good price and was please. Then I moved into my house 1 year later - the 42 inch screen was dwarfed by the size of my living room and looked really stupid. I upgraded to a 58 inch pretty quickly. I'll keep this one till it stops working.

I'm going to keep my other but clarify - I do like technology and I'm always interested in what's new. I've had a desktop computer since 1992, used bulletin boards and then text based email and browser, have been on message boards since the late 90s, skipped Myspace but joined FB fairly early (2007/8). So I'm not a Luddite but my budget and tendency towards frugality don't mesh well with upgrading often. I tend to buy new tech on the later side - I only got a tablet last year and my iphone was my first real cellphone and I didn't get it until 2017 I think - I had an itouch for ages before that though. And we only got rid of the landline when we moved last year.

I've been using the same paper journal for years. It's wonderful because you can remove the cover, take out the inside which is bound with a cardstock cover and then insert a new one. I have 20 of the inserts labeled by years! It's made by Exacompta Paris and is called a Forum journal. It's a little under 5" x 7". I take it everywhere with me.

I am 100% an early adopter. I often buy new hardware on the day it’s released and I’m a beta tester of lots of pre-release software.
I’ve updated my iPhone every year since it came to Verizon, which was the 4, I believe 🤣
I work in the industry and truly love being on the bleeding edge whenever possible.
I replace my laptop every 3ish years and hand the old one down to DH or DS. I always max out the model I get, so it will be satisfactory for them too.

How do you homeschool without either a tablet or a computer? Books. Why do I need a computer or tablet to homeschool? How do your kids write research papers? By hand? Or do you have a typewriter? Didn’t you mention you have a online homeschool group? I just can’t imagine, in today’s world, not having at least a laptop for kids to learn or use for their future job preparation. At work we use computers 95% of the time. I grew up without computers, but in todays world, it is such a necessity, at least in my opinion.

I don't upgrade just because there is something newer and more exciting out there. But if I DO need to replace some electronics, I want the most recent model--on the belief that this newest will stay up to date the longest. The only thing I am more nervous about are developments that are completely new and untried. Took me forever to let my computer update to Windows 10. Still haven't let #11 in, although I am sure it will work just fine. Just don't really need anything to work more efficiently.
I am using an iphone 8+. My iPad is from 2018. My pc is almost 3 years old.

Only one of them has just gotten to the research paper stage. I don’t believe “job preparation” is a necessary goal of elementary school. The technology I used in elementary school is obsolete today, as will the technology of their childhood be obsolete when they enter their career years.

Not having computer literacy skills severely hampers general life. We're not getting away from typing, spreadsheets and internet searches any time soon. Touch typing is the #1 skill I learned in high school that I wish I'd had so much sooner. It changed me from reluctant to pick up a pencil for anything into a short story producing fiend!
I'll buy the current model of something (after lots of research and checking reviews) but then run it into the ground. I don't casually upgrade anything that's still working.

Genuine questions- will your kids transition to public junior high or high school or do you plan to homeschool all the way thru? What happens when they get to college? Do they know HOW to use computers and technology? FAFSA is completed online only so they will need to be able to do that. What about creating a resume for a job down the line? Many jobs have online applications only. When I was in elementary school (in the mid-70's), I had full access to all technology since my dad worked at Apple when it was just being created with Woz and Jobs. He was on the ground floor of Atari with Bushnell too. We had ALL the fun stuff. It formed my abilities to access and use technology responsibly. My husband had never touched a computer until college. He struggled. He still struggles a bit with tech.

We know many homeschool graduates who have gone to many colleges. It’s not an issue. I know the homeschool admissions advisors at many universities in Texas as I’ve had them give presentations to our group. As I mentioned, we all have iPhones. You can fill out the FAFSA on an iPhone. Pretty much anything you can do on a computer you can do on an iPhone. They can go online. They can look things up. They can evaluate resources and cross check sources. When they get older and these things are actually in sight, I’ll worry about them. Right now they’re just not. Not real concerned with whether they know how to write a resume at their ages. Don’t particularly understand the focus on jobs and colleges in early education.

I don’t rush out to get the latest and greatest as soon as it’s available but if I need to replace something I tend to go for the newest model. I’m still using an iPhone X, it works fine so not in a rush to get a new one but once it is time to replace it I’ll get whatever is newest, but likely a mid tier model, not the fanciest one.
We don’t have a smart tv but we do use firesticks, we have Amazon echo and echo dots but I don’t use Wi-Fi lightbulbs. I have a robot vacuum but it’s not the super fancy self emptying kind, and so on…still use a regular drip coffee maker and our washer and dryer use knobs instead of buttons.
I wouldn’t have a computer if it weren’t for my husband owning a desk top. I haven’t had a computer in nearly a decade but I do have an ipad and a kindle paperwhite. I absolutely live for the Libby app and wouldn’t read nearly as many books as I do without it.

I’m old, but I do like technology. The older I get, I have found the less I “need” it, but fully acknowledge that it often makes things a lot easier. For that reason, while I never buy something new just because it is new, I will and do, replace things as my products become obsolete or damaged.
We own many Apple products. I like how they are fully integrated, making them easier to use. Many people of my generation do not use any or very little technology. The computers and cell phones they do have, they struggle to use. I have found that using computers and cell phones particularly, has streamlined and made accessing data much easier.
As someone with health issues, I like being able to access my doctors medical portals. I have access to my prescription information online. I can order and monitor the shipping of crucial medications. Because our calendars are linked, and it is much easier for my husband and I to make appointments that don’t interfere with his or his work schedule.
The last 12 years, I have been the primary person to take my grandson to school and to his appointments and his sporting activities. And having his school calendar, sports calendar and all of his appointments and my appointments and my husband‘s appointments and his mothers work schedule and everyones holidays all in one place and able to see them at a glance, has really improved my life.
I upgrade my iPhone ever few years. I’ve had the 4, 6, 7+, 10 and currently the 13 Pro. Until I got the 13 Pro last year, i’ll have my upgrades have been to pass my phone along to my DH.
I like the advantages technology bring to my life. I still have a wall calendar, but I find technology to be a useful tool that enhances my life. So why not take advantage of it. I don’t “need” the latest and greatest, but I like having reliable, easy to use products that can run the most current software available.
I do 50+ loads of laundry a month, so I love my new washer and dryer. I have low vision, so I love my large screen television. For the same reason I love my iPad Pro. It’s easier to see than my cell phone. All of these things make my life more pleasant. Why shouldn’t I take advantage of that.

Early adopter for the most part. I update as soon as possible to the latest hardware and am a beta tester of lots of software. I love my smart lightbulbs and other conveniences.

our household are early adopters.. dh is faster to get the latest and greatest, but I am not far behind. he ordered an iphone 14, I have a 13. I am about to replace my mac air with a new one.
he got into computer science with a degree in 1974.. and is still a geek, so we have always had access to mostly the best.. plus, he worked for apple his last years of work so loves the products. quite a turnaround from the 70's, when he met Jobs at the west coast computer fair and was not impressed with him as a person.
our kids will never be as tech savy as their dad, but they do pretty well.

i don't buy new things unless something is broken. i did upgrade to iphone 12 about a year ago because my son's phone 6 died. my bf's daughter was buying a new phone and sold me that for $400 so i gave my son my 10s (that i bought from same girl after MY 6 died and she was upgrading last time - lol!). i drive a 2006 car, my macbook is 2015, my tv is... i don't know how old.... second hand flat screen but not smart tv or any fancy business. no alexa or google home, my bro gave me a chomecast thing that is still in the box. and i still refuse to use siri and actually look sh!t up on my phone by typing it in.

Depends on whether my current tech meets my needs. I may upgrade for options I want, but it depends on how old my original item is. For phones, I always purchase newest model (and will wait if a big change is coming so I can get the latest/greatest) and pass on my old phone to my son. He appreciates the upgrade for free.
Cars, I hold on as long as possible and it’s so great to get new tech when I finally get a new car.

I chose "other". I'm just not interested in technology for the most part. In many cases I don't bother, and when I do buy something I keep it until it dies. For instance, I just bought my 1st smartphone this year, LOL! I've had a cell phone since the 90s, but I always keep it in the car, so I never cared to upgrade them unless I had to.
And while I do have a Kindle, I received it 3rd hand from a friend years ago. I'm still using it over a decade later---it's the original first generation Kindle. It still works!!

I would like to keep up with technology better but my stuff still works. My phone is an Xr and it works but not well. My Apple Watch is great but v3. I would like a newer one but it still works. I have an iPad and it’s great and no disruption to usage so what am I going to replace? The car is 2 years old. Ok it’s pretty new. I am not sure what else?

Personality wise, definitely and early adaptor, I love the latest and greatest and I love gadgets. Someone from the board very kindly sent me an Echo speaker because I couldn't wait until they were released in Australia, and I had to do a few dodgy things to make it work here. I still have an Echo, plus and Echo show as an alarm clock. I have everything possible connected to Wi-Fi and I can turn things on & off with my phone or voice - lights, air conditioning, wax warmer, heated blankets. I have cameras for security and to keep an eye on the cats. I have a tablet, desktop computer and a laptop. The tablet is the latest model, but the laptop isn't because I rarely use it - but I like to have it just in case. I also have a water fountain for the cats that is connected to Wi-Fi and I can see on my phone when they have a drink, how much each time and how much for the day. I also sends me reminders to refill and clean it. I was stalking it on release day and I'm pretty sure I was one of the first people to order one.
While I want it all on the day it's released, I do try to talk myself off the ledge a lot of the time, because I don't "need" these things immediately and sometimes it is a waste of money. I generally always cave in on the phones though and pre-order the new one.

I am horribly tech deficient, and I cry and rage every time I have to get a new phone or computer or kindle. My Dh tries his hardest to find used products as close to my current one as possible to minimize my panic and tears. In my next life, I better be a tech whiz!
