How is anyone being humiliated by volunteering? I have done a dunk tank before and loved every second of it! Isn’t the whole point that the humiliation is what is supposed to be funny?

Did I say I was humiliated? No! Stop putting words on this that others did nor and do not feel. It's okay not to like a fundraising event. But don't take away the fun and joy that others have because you project these things on them.

I mean can't you say that those who don't sell enough candy to earn a prize are humiliated because they didn't do enough to make money?
Or those who don't dress up for spirit week are humiliated because they can't afford the items to show school spirit?
Good gosh.

At DS's elementary school they get to tape the principal to the wall. As long as people are volunteering and not being forced I don't have a problem with it.

I guess we have very different ideas on what is humiliating/embarrassing and what is fun. I don’t particularly like Halloween, either, because it feels embarrassing to wear a silly costume. My kids don’t dress up much for the dress up days at school (their choice) unless it is jersey day or something basic. I would never in a million years dress up like a movie character to go see a movie or the Harry Potter museum, etc. I’m having trouble seeing how getting a pie smashed in your face is fun, but will trust that some people like it.

I work at a large university...during staff picnic day there's a dunk tank and the chancellor gets in it. I would think if he didn't want to do it he wouldn't agree to it.

I feel like there are two different things being talked about. The activity itself (smashing pie in someone’s face) and whether or not someone volunteers themself and agrees to participate.
Obviously if someone volunteers to have pie shoved in their own face then they themselves aren’t harmed by the activity.
That can be separate from the fact that some see it as unnecessary as entertainment for children. Society finds lots of humiliating things funny and entertaining. Vulnerable students are pantsed because it’s humiliating and others’ laughter at being the target add to the humiliation. Shoving pie in someone’s face feels close to that for me. A dunk tank does not.
So maybe people are okay with volunteering for it, but it still seems like there could be better ways to motivate kids.

Regardless of people volunteering or gleefully doing it, it is not setting a very good example for kids. Somehow the dunking doesn’t seem as bad. You are literally slapping someone in the face with a pie and telling kids that is funny.

I worked at the Y for a couple of years in the after-school program. One of the big things we did every year was a day where the kids could smash a pie (whipped cream on a paper plate) in the face of the four of us on staff. Oh my gosh, it was probably the thing the kids looked forward to more than anything else.
The four of us were in no way required to participate in this if we didn't want to but we all did because it was fun. And it was funny. In no way were any of us humiliated. I guess I'm not understanding the humiliation part or why this is even an issue.

Our elementary school does this annually at an assembly. Students, parents, and staff thoroughly enjoy it. I’ve participated a few times and it’s just plain fun!

We have these once in awhile. The kids love it, and I think that's why the teachers don't mind it. I don't volunteer.

No. No way. And I would speak out loudly against it.

Maybe she changed the OP? I'm not sure. But she seemed to be asking about suggesting rather than demanding. I think the best thing might be to quietly ask some of the teachers involved if they enjoy doing it, or if they're being pressured by admin or other parents and would like someone to suggest a different activity. Often parents can make changes that teachers don't feel comfortable asking for. I wouldn't demand a change. I think it is a good idea to ask some teacher friends what the general feelings are regarding this part of the fundraiser. I should also clarify that the pie in the face is not the fundraiser. Kids are sent home with an envelope and asked to ask family members or friends (but not go door to door) for money for the PTO. It is the only fundraiser throughout the year. If kids bring back their envelope (even if it is empty) they are eligible to win the chance to throw the pie in the principals face. It just seems like there would be another way to celebrate the end of the fundraiser than pie in the face. But who knows, maybe the staff like it. If teachers weren’t in favor and wouldn’t speak up on their own, I don’t see why they would tell you either. It sounds like only the principal is involved here, so not sure why teachers would care anyway. That coin scramble sounds horrid! It’s nice of you to be considerate of the teachers.

Personally, as long as the participants are okay with it, I think it’s hilarious.
This world can’t seem to find the humor in anything anymore. Life is going to start getting really boring.

Personally, as long as the participants are okay with it, I think it’s hilarious. This world can’t seem to find the humor in anything anymore. Life is going to start getting really boring. That’s a bit extreme. “The world” finds plenty of humor in things still. Lots of the world finds getting hit in the face with a pie hilarious. I kind of wish I could too. As a child in a home with parents who were very physical punishers, I have strong feelings about lots of things I wish I didn’t. The pie in the face thing has always bothered me. I think people usually have have strong reactions to things for a reason and I don’t think it’s usually because they’re just boring fun suckers. I guess some some people are going to find it entertaining and some aren’t. I’m good with you thinking it’s hilarious without thinking the world is going to come to a sad end. I’m 100% sure that pie in the face will go on.
