My dd made a recipe this wk where she grated potatoes to make potato pancakes. She took off chunks of her knuckles in the process. so we were talking about this. There has to be an easier way. Would a food processor do the same job? grate? or make it too mushy? when you have to grate something, what do you use?
Thanks!!

I make latkes every year. Food processor is the only way I grate my potatoes now (I haven’t used a hand grater since the early 80’s). 2 years ago, my old food processor died while making them and Dh ok’d going to Bed Bath and Beyond and buying a Breville food processor on that day.

My food processor will grate vegetables. I think you can buy some sort of glove for protecting your hand when using a grater or mandolin.

I make latkes most years and just use a hand grater, a food processor I’m sure would be easier!

I actually use my grinder attachment on my kitchen aid. I prefer a much finer grind vs. a big shred (I grew up with big shred from a hand grater) After everything is ground I drain it for a bit to get rid of as much liquid as possible.
And...now I want latkes!

When my Breville food processor died earlier this year, I decided to get a smaller stick mix set, thinking that I can just use my Thermomix as a bigger food processor. I regret not replacing it with another Breville one now, because I really miss the attachments that grate and slice.

I use my KA grater attachment 98% of the time as well.
The key to a box grater is to make sure it is sharp. My OXO one sucks as it is so hard to grate on. I had a one sided grater with handle that I liked as I could change the angle on it.

For a big job I would use a food processor. But if I just needed a couple shredded carrots or something I would use a hand grater. In fact, I just found a nice little one with a container that attaches to it in a box of junk at the lake cabin and just used it last weekend. It’s not worth the work of cleaning my big food processor for something small because it’s a PITA to take it apart to clean it.

My food processor has a grater disk. I use that. Alternatively, you can get a metal glove from microplane.

I am a Breville lover and snob. Do you really like it? I have some carrots to slice and I could buy blocks of mozzarella and grind it myself. I have inherited an ancient Cuinsinart and I am interested. www.thebay.com/content/clearance-smsm?sre=235_092622_GLOBAL-BANNER-v6_SLIDE_1_CLEARANCE-SMSM_

How old is your box grater? I bought a new one a few years ago and was amazed at how sharp it is. Evidently they dull after 25+ years of use!
My food processor has a grater disk that does a great (ha, ha) job. It does release more water, so I take a cotton dish cloth and squeeze the water out of the grated potatoes. But then, I think the end product gets a little crisper since it doesn’t steam as much as it cooks.

It’s her box grater, she just bought it brand new. Any suggestions for a good smaller food processor that grates ?? She lives alone. Doesn have a KA mixer.

Box graters work great. She just needed to stop a little bit sooner. Either turn the potato remnants on their end to grate the rest or just use fingertips. No more knuckle busters

My family made potato pancakes all the time and always used the food processor to grate the potatoes. I can’t remember ever using a hand grater to do them.

And...now I want latkes! I bought the shredder set for my KitchenAid mixer so I would use that. I've only ever used it for cheese, but I would do potatoes too. She could get a mandoline, most of those have a knob on top so your hand is not even touching the food. Look at the Dash brand mandoline on Amazon - it is quite popular.

Any suggestions for a good smaller food processor that grates ?? I used to have a KA food processor that I loved. I got rid of it when I bought the attachments for my KA mixer. I had an older version of this: KA 7 cupMaybe a salad shooter would be a cheaper option for her too. I didn't even know they still made them!

My food processor has a grate blade, so yes, you can do this with a food processor. I'm that person who would destroy their fingers in the name of a meal, so I get it, lol. My hubby cringes every time I take out the mandolin.
Alternately, they make gloves (for knife use, but I don't see why they wouldn't work for grating) that are supposed to protect your fingers/hands from getting cut.

i have all kinds of manual and electric graters. sometimes i get too lazy to wash out all the components of my food processor and the handheld ones can result in bleedy knuckles. i got this one and now i can shred large volumes fast and with no bleedy knuckles. link

I have a grater attachment on my Cuisinart food processor. Totally worth it for cheese and potatoes.

Any suggestions for a good smaller food processor that grates ?? She lives alone. Doesn have a KA mixer. I have this small one that suction cups to the countertop. It is just amazing! It has a thicker grater, a fine one (works great for carrots, for carrot cake!) and a slicer. I ended up buying one for each of my kids and they absolutly love them too. I grate most of my cheese. I also do potatoes for hashbrowns. This gadget is cheap (ish) and you can pop it apart and put it in the dishwasher. It doesn't take up much space. I have a big food processor that can grate things - but I always use this one! Rotary Grater - no knuckles will be abused!

I bought the prep attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer and I love it. It has a slicer and shredder attachment. Since I got it, I haven’t gotten my food processor out at all.
Before I bought that, I usually just used a box grater if it was a small job. I do have gloves I wear with my mandolin when I use it (rarely) but for the box grater I'm just super careful to stop before I get too close to the sharp part.

I only use a hand grater for cheese and vegetables because I can’t be bothered to wash the food processor! It works fine for me, but I have perfected the skill of grating just using the palm of my hand.

Or if it's a carrot, etc. I'd just eat the very end of the carrot (or give it to the dogs as a treat, lol).

The second he hears me take the grater out he runs into the kitchen!
