They just shouldn’t. And we are allowing this to be the new normal. What does it say about us?

I agree!
My youngest told me that "He thinks he'll just be dead" because he won't be able to throw a book hard enough to get a gun away from a shooter."
Well just fuck all this freedom, please.

Someone should compile all of the comments from little ones and send the list to lawmakers. So sad to hear what kids are thinking and saying about all of this.

Just what I wanted to read as a mom of a toddler who’s going to public school in a few years. Ugh.

My 7 year old had her active shooter drill last week. She came home asking me to always pack her big heavy water bottle in case she needs to hit an intruder in the head with it. Then she told me the best way to push the desks in front of the door so that it’s harder to get in. Even worse was how matter of fact she was about it.

UGH - seriously, there are ways for children to learn to stay safe without terrorizing them to do it. We practice fire and tornado drills all the time without freaking the kids out. There are ways to teach children what to do if there was an unsafe situation in the school and they would need to remain in place. I would never think to teach a young child to try and fight back and attack an active shooter. Here we call it shelter in place. Teaching children to stay where they are with a safe adult to help them.

But the right is more concerned that they might have their feelings hurt by discussions of historical injustices.

I've said so many things I thought I would never say. I watched The Black Phone a couple of weeks ago with my teenage DD and we broke apart the whole movie into "what should he have done instead of...", "what should you do when...". It feels like I'm more of a basic survival instructor some days rather than a parent.

No kid should have to ask questions like this and no parent should have to say yes. I am so sorry it has come to this. I hope these conversations fill the NRA's inbox as well as anyone who supports these horrific gun laws.

These are horrific stories. What can we do? How do things change? I have protested and written letters and nothing changes? We have to get these horrific people out of office. They cater to the lowest form of humanity.

I am sick to my stomach reading the things those poor babies have to think about. I don't understand how regular people can buy such destructive weapons. What regular person needs them? And using insanity as the excuse. If course these pieces of shit are crazy, but they it shouldn't be used as the excuse to get off or lighter sentence. Just like the crap with Nicholas Cruz.

ALICE is a school of thought/preparedness/teaching plan that many police departments, schools and government entities use/teach to respond to an active shooter. Part of the teaching os that if you don’t have a way to hide or escape or shelter safely I. Place that you do fight back with whatever you have on hand. I’ve done the training. They told us to throw staplers at the shooter. It’s absolutely taught.

this is a terrible way to grow up. there were many things i feared when going to school---being late, not studying enough for a test, forgetting my key to the house or my lunch money. but NEVER did i once think that there would be an active shooter and i would have to hide somewhere so the shooter doesn't find me. the only thing we ever did drills for were earthquakes.

Kids are taught the same things in this training. It’s the same training the sheriffs office gives to schools including kids.

We just had a serious threat at my DD(16)'s high school last week. Graffiti posted on a bathroom wall, getting redone after removed and getting increasingly specific as to threats, the exact day, etc. The 3 schooldays leading up to it were just horrifying. Extra police in and around school, snipers on the roof, all kinds of stuff. Didn't shut down school, didn't give excused absences, etc. because they weren't allowed to by the state. Maybe half the kids were there the day of? My DD managed to (truly but conveniently) hurt her finger pretty badly at a sports practice the night before, so it was a great day to go get it xrayed and have a doctor's excuse.
But just even the trauma leading up to it all. For all of us. Times the 2800 kids in the school, plus all the corresponding admin, staff, and teachers, plus all the forces involved.
I honestly didn't think anything was going to happen. But what if I was wrong? The risk vs reward was just too great.
I broke when she told me that the reason she says "I love you" every time she leaves the house isn't just because she's a nice person. It's because she fears she'll never come back.
Our nation is screwed up. Yeah, I had plenty of fears as a kid, but it was more along the lines of how did I do on the test, or will Billy ever like me back? Maybe the occasional tornado or something. This would never, ever have crossed my mind, nor should it have to.

I can’t imagine how many little kids are now living with daily anxiety because of this. 🥺

Not all of us want that to be normal. We vote for candidates who want strict gun control. We hate guns so much in our family. We don't want anyone to have to worry about losing a loved one to gun violence. It's so sad that these kids/teachers/school staff have to go through this. But I guess if they are not unborn, they don't matter to many politicians.

... snipers on the roof, all kinds of stuff. I'm sorry but what the fork? Did you say SNIPERS? At a school? I cannot even... Honestly that sounds like a movie, not real life. The only drills I've ever done in school my entire attendance were for fire safety.
