Rapper Coolio, known for songs such as "Gangsta's Paradise" and "Fantastic Voyage," has died at the age of 59.
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Rapper Coolio, who achieved mainstream success in the 90s for songs such as "Gangsta's Paradise" and "Fantastic Voyage," died in Los Angeles Wednesday at the age of 59.
Coolio's agent confirmed the rapper's death to Eyewitness News. According to the Associated Press, he died at the Los Angeles home of a friend.
A police source told Eyewitness News a death investigation has been opened, and there are no apparent signs of foul play.
Coolio won a Grammy for best solo rap performance for "Gangsta's Paradise," the 1995 hit from the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film "Dangerous Minds" that sampled Stevie Wonder's 1976 song "Pastime Paradise."
He was nominated for five other Grammys during a career that began in the late-1980s.
Born in Monessen, Pennsylvania south of Pittsburgh, Coolio moved to Compton, California, where he went to community college. He worked as a volunteer firefighter and in airport security before devoting himself full-time to the hip-hop scene.
His career took off with the 1994 release of his debut album on Tommy Boy Records, "It Takes a Thief." It's opening track, "Fantastic Voyage," would reach No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
A year later, "Gangsta's Paradise" would become a No. 1 single.
Coolio was also known for the songs "1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)" and "C U When U Get There."

He was on a Food Network show a few years ago, one of the competition ones,I made one of his recipes, and it was really good. I am going to have to remember what it was, some kind of dessert I think.

I met him a number of times in the 90's. I worked at a Sporting Goods store and he would stop in on his way to go to his cabin. He snowboarded so always came into get his new stuff. He was so nice and laid back and was never a jerk to us.
We would get other "celebrities" in there and they were 100% a$$holes.

Love his music. I was so sad when I heard and he was so young.
ETA My husband said he heard it was a heart attack. I haven't heard so don't know if that is true.

OMFG he has a long and varied substance abuse history, and has had relapses as recently as this past summer. Be gone.

(Take that iinfo with a grain of salt, but TMZ is usually right about things like this) There's all kinds of back door Reddit people yakking about the time it took for the cops to be called . . . plenty of time to clean up. Really, he has a long history of cocaine and crack addiction, and has been suffering for a relapse as recently as this summer. It's sad he's gone. Addiction is terrible. I really can't figure out what the problem is here. God forbid, if this were, say, MTG - imagine the "tots and pears". Again. Hypocrisy.

My daughter and I were just talking about this last night - there are plenty of possibilities, of course, but those who have been in healthcare for any length of time (or worked in a coroner’s office) would not be surprised if his death is deemed the result of natural causes. His age + genetics alone carry fairly significant risk factors, even without the history of substance use. Of course, all of them combined increase the chances of cardiac issues and strokes, to name just a couple of the possibilities.

C U When U Get There (soooo hard to type!!) is a great song. It was the first song I listened to after hearing the news. This hit me the same way that Bob Saget's death hit. Unexpected, far too young and has left me sad.

Way too young.
I sorta met him once; we were eating at the same place in New Orleans. He thought I was taking a photo of him...I was taking one of my DH (we were on our honeymoon). I did ask my DH if he thought it was Coolio, and he had no idea who Coolio was...he did know the song though. It was 1995.
The story is a little longer, but I will end there. Wishing his family and friends gentle memories.

Here’s a nice article with some interesting info, including impressive stats about the popularity of Gangsta’s Paradise.
