I have a bunch of page "overlay" type items, they are paper, not acetate. They are shaped, some look like doilies kind of, some are square with pointed edges, etc. Do you still have these? They were kind of expensive and I'd like to use them but not quite sure how. They've just sat there since maybe 2000-2005, too pretty to use! Edited for photo, I have so many of these, some are like this, some are circles like a doily, some are words, etc. Just trying to think of a more interesting way to use these. ETA Well you can see that I did not really think of a more interesting way lol, but I'll take the suggestions offered for next time! Thank you! http://instagram.com/p/CjMT6mmskVj

I'm having a hard time picturing the items. Could you post a picture? It would maybe help people come up with suggestions.😊

I have the KI die cut type papers that were kind of swirly and I just layered them over a similar color paper and used it like a pp background. I can't picture the other kinds you are listing. Do you know who made them? Maybe a Google image search would come up with some suggestions?

For a paper like that, I would cut it in half where the points are and use it to divide a page. I'd cover the seam a thin strip of paper, put pictures on the other side and use this piece as the base for a big title, some journaling in strips and embellish at the corners and some place on the flip side. Something like that.

Maybe look up some of Shimelle’s half & half layouts or sketches. Otherwise I’d probably just use the more solid areas to mat photos or something.

I have these too, and knew exactly what you were talking about. Funny how easily I can recognize a problem when I have the same one. I have LOTS of these.
I've been looking for ideas and I agree with those that said to cut them. The times when I've like them the most are when they only use part of it, or use it across two pages, but not together. For example, cut about 1/3 off and use it along the left edge of the left page of a double page spread, and then take the rest (or a portion of it) and turn it use it along the right edge of the facing page.
I was so afraid to cut these that I just didn't made good use of them because they are very difficult to use in one big piece.
ETA: I have a friend who uses these really successfully by even just cutting part of it off and butting it up against the edge of the page. Something about having it go "off" the page makes it look better to overlap things on the other side of it.

I bought a bunch of papers like that back in the day as well. I've layered them over square pages as part of my background before but if that doesn't appeal to you at this point I say chop em up!

I’ve got quite a collection too! I usually cut them in half or 1/3 -2/3 and plunk The shaped piece onto a background and then add a border strip where the 2 pieces meet.

I was going to say exactly what Neisey said! You can also use a piece coming ONTO the page from the side... like if you have a circular shape, have it be a part-circle coming in from any angle, especially a corner.

I scored a whole lot of these in the destash I picked up earlier this year. There are some I plan to make a page on just as they are. When I put them into my album I'll put a piece of plain cardstock behind them if the page on the other side has a b side print. I also love how they look cut into 1/3 - 2/3, with the cut edge running off the page and the fancy edge into the page. Sometimes I'll put both pieces on the page, like on this sketch Saturday sketch here, where I'd use the two pieces as the base for each of the two paper stacks, and cut then down so there is still a gap in the centre of the page. As others have suggested they can also be used across a double page spread, either as the middle piece that spans across both pages, or by cutting them into halves and putting the halves on the outer edges of the spread. I really want to play with some of the ones I have, I just haven't found a story that is a good fit for them yet.

Which parts are the overlays? I'm not familiar with the product. Your page looks very nice, nothing sticks out as odd.

I’ll see if I can hunt up some of my old layouts to post…

I have some of these. You can cut them in half or as a 1/3 and a 2/3 to use as borders or a pocket.
They are kind of limiting, though. I think that is why they fell out of favor rather soon after being introduced.

Your page looks great!! I love blue and yellow together, it is one of my favorite color combos. I have used a used a few of these specialty papers recently. Here is an example of my half and half version. I layered the snowflake specialty diecut over a similar color for a tone on tone effect: http://instagram.com/p/CZRjkRzuoeK I also did this one recently, again with a bit of tone on tone and placed directly in the center: http://instagram.com/p/Ca4kdiUOH4K And I have used a specialty paper with it falling off of the page, but that was from a past Christmas. I can take a picture later today when my toddler is asleep. He likes to "help" photograph. It is not that helpful, haha. I like the pocket idea, I will have to try that!

sarahsprettypapers these are great! I really like both of them, but especially the 1/2 one...that is an excellent idea. I also always think I have to layer it with a contrast but I can see how well the tone on tone works. Embri the paper I am trying to work with is a shaped one. They used to be really really popular for a hot minute lol, and I bought a lot, have decided it is time to use them.

kmage, I fell in love with these as well and also have found them hard to use. Of the ones that I have used, I did what Neisey & kitbop suggested by using a half or a third on a page. I don't think I've used a whole one on a background. But aren't they pretty to look at?!

Oh Mt gosh, I remember those too! I gave them a try once and had such a hard time figuring out the layout.
I love the examples shown and the half idea.

I remember these! I don't have any left but back in the day I liked to cut them in half or in quarters. I'd use the half like bookends on a 2 page layout and the quarter cut pieces I liked to use on one corner of a layout.
