Republicans tried to add a last minute amendment to a bill for veterans banning abortions for all veterans. This Democrat from Michigan called them out asking Who are you? We are elected officials, not medical professionals. Her remarks are short and definitely worth listening to. www.huffpost.com/entry/elissa-slotkin-abortion-speech_n_63357ba9e4b08e0e606aeed7www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/02/elissa-slotkin-abortion-veterans-republicans/There are few members of Congress who can effectively lay bare the abject misogyny, cruelty and medical ignorance of the GOP. One such member: Rep. Elissa Slotkin. The Michigan Democrat, a veteran of the CIA who completed three tours in Iraq and stepmother to a daughter serving in the Army, denounced a Republican effort this past week to hijack a bill that would help veterans transition to civilian life with a last-minute amendment to ban abortion for female veterans. Sign up for a weekly roundup of thought-provoking ideas and debates
“You want to ban all abortions. That is your goal,” she said on Wednesday. “Many of you have been open about that, and if you flip the House, we know that you will put forward a full ban on all abortion for all states.” She went on: “We are all, on this floor, elected officials and not medical professionals. If it was your wife, your daughter who was suffering through a miscarriage, are you gonna tell her she can’t [have an abortion] until her fever gets high enough and until she’s bleeding harder?”
For presenting a clear and compelling argument about the stakes when politicians seek to control women’s bodies, we can say well done, Rep. Slotkin.

This stuff pisses me off so much. Abortion is healthcare. A good friend just had one last week; she is a cancer patient. A pregnancy won't 100% certainly kill her but does risk her life and definitely risks her treatment, and the idea that some bunch of politicians repeatedly want to get in the middle of her healthcare is infuriating and personal.
I'm glad we have people with power speaking out.

Slotkin is my congresswoman. I think she is amazing. I would vote for for 4 times and twice on Sunday. She's brilliant.

Agreed, this stuff pisses me off too. Of all people to restrict medical care for of any stripe, our veterans need to be left the hell alone to receive whatever treatments that are needed for their physical and mental health. We as a country have done an abysmal job of caring for our service people both while enlisted and after. We can and should do much better by them and this is not the way to do that.

Is this lady interested in running for president? I think she has already won my vote. These are the women that we NEED right now!

Now that the district lines have been redrawn, I’m probably going to be stuck with Lisa McClain. I’m hoping Slotkin runs for Senate when there’s an open seat.

I applaud the point about how something that should be bipartisan is being made political, because I feel that is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in the US. Every damn thing has to be political these days. Everything. And it's ridiculous and certainly in no way helpful to the American people. It only benefits the politicians.

Hopefully she will be voted out, but it isnt likely.

I was talking with a republican friend of mine. She is totally against the abortion ban. (Actually all of my repub friends are.) She said that there should be a vote on the ballot. She doesn't understand why there isn't. Especially since it's just a tiny fraction of actual republicans agree with the ban. Of course we all know why. She was allllmost there. She almost got it. But I didn't want to push her. The point was, that even she is appalled that abortion has become political. She said she would actually consider voting dem because of it. I hope this bites the repubs in the ass.
