Is anyone else noticing this >> Same old thing, different collection.
Some(but not all) companies and collections, everything looks the same.
New collection = different season or different theme.....same old style and same old colors. It may be new, but it's not *new*, because it looks the same as the last collection and the collection before that, and the ten collections before that.
One collection in the past was a big hit, so now every collection is formatted after the "big hit" collection of yesteryear. Photo Play and Echo Park, as well as some other companies are guilty of this.

I loved the original gnomes, but then it went too far for me.
I love the Simple Stories Vintage lines and bought three of them. Now they aren't making that line anymore and that disappoints me. I guess is just is hit or miss and companies got with what sells or who they can keep as a designer.
When my kids were younger, I bought so much Echo Park. So, so much. For me, it was one of the few companies that was geared towards more masculine colors and icons. They had lines with pinks and flowers, but it wasn't incorporated into most of their lines.

Yes....I've noticed how American Crafts has a recipe for the collections for respective designers. As much as I love VB, if you look, you see a variation of the same types of pattern, which I guess makes sense, people like it, it works.

Every week I look at the "one buck Wednesday" digital sale items at Snap Click Supply. There's usually a theme based on the season. Just recently the fall collections were on sale...every single collections from Carta Bella and echo park looked nearly identical. Not just the looks either, but the names. "Welcome Fall", "Welcome Autumn"... so yeah, new yet old just slightly different.

I swear I sometimes think it's a re-release or there's an error with the photos provided because some of these look exactly the same ad the previous ones... Even Pinkfresh has jumped on board with super generic seasonal lines this year (and a boring Christmas collection). Help! An evil witch/queen has cursed the craft and we need someone to break the spell.

Not sure if it is that we need the scrapbook industry to change, or that we need to adopt new designers and lines as our scrapping needs change. When I started out, I was looking for baby lines and little girl lines. Lots of pastels and pinks and cutesy.
When I was scrapping really little boys, I loved My Little Bicycle and BoBunny for their bold colours and fun icons. They worked for the little girls, too as they became toddlers and moved on to pre school and onwaard. I have since collected a ton of little boy and outdoor play papers from other companies like Photo Play and Simple Stories and Bella Blvd.
As the older group of dgk's became teens, I began collecting lines that reflected their interests.
I love it when one Cocoa Vanilla boys' line goes with an earlier one so I can mix and match. I still have a bunch of boys to scrap, so it works for me right now.
I enjoyed playing with Simple Stories and how they coordinate so well with the new 49& Market b/c my kids' families go hiking and camping and send me pic's to scrap. KaiserCraft has some lines that work well with these as well.
I scrap alot about our dgk's adventures on the farm and for awhile there were no farm lines at all. Of course I grabbed up the first ones that arrived in the stores. Now I have such a stash, I really don't need any more, but how would the companies know that?
Also my skills and style have changed. Where I used to use alot of themed papers, I find myself now creating a lot of my own backgrounds with inks. Sometimes I like to take the easy way and b/c I like the look, I will buy the lines that give me that.
My dgk's are almost all into one sport or more, so I am now collecting papers that work with that, but finding that because I can cut my own shapes and titles, I am now more often looking for cs in the team colours. And I am loving the mini lines put out by PhotoPlay for the different activities.
I like that I can pick up just the papers I want, not the whole collection. I wish I could pick and choose which die cuts I could grab. I have bison on our farm, and of course I grabbed the Doodlebug line with the bison, but I had to get a whole ton of things I won't use to get my hands on a couple of bison!
Sorry for the ramble. I guess we just have to keep in contact with our LSS's and other suppliers, requesting what we need at the moment, and hope that the industry can keep up as our tastes change.

I totally agree. I see this so much with EP. I recently put all my EP fall collections together into a mega kit. They all look the same except for a different shade of blue here and there.

Add Doodlebug to the the list. Every line is the exact same shade of the exact same color as last year's [insert theme here.] Bor-ing.
I can't even tell what lines from Echo Park I already own when looking online for deals, since it's all the same colors/theme and patterns.

I can't even tell what lines from Echo Park I already own when looking online for deals, since it's all the same colors/theme and patterns. Doodlebug actually does that on purpose. They use the same set of colors always. That way all of their stuff coordinates. And that way they aren't trying to come up with new colors to match etc. Yes, I agree it can get boring. But, it is also nice knowing that all of their collections will match with each other. That being said, I don't really use Doodlebug as it's too cutesy for me.

I feel like EP and CB are the most guilty of this and have been for quite a few years! I'm glad that they are still in business and churning out product, but it's ALL the same over and over and over.....

I think it is hard for them to come up with something new and also satisfy everyone. Like babylou said one strategy would be to stay in the same color family so as not to get the customers upset that the stuff they have in stash does not match anything new. However, that does not address those who are not concerned with that. I personally don't really like themed paper as grammadee said time, circumstances, events, have changed the way and what I am scrapbooking, so I tend to like a patterned papper that can't hit at a theme but be versatile as well. What kinds of changes would you suggest?

I stopped by the (not so local) LSS, and while I liked the papers I saw, I knew that I had similar papers in my stash, so I left empty handed.
I don’t know what I would tell the paper companies and/or designers, but I prefer versatile papers. Cute little characters, such as gnomes, llamas, or _______ (insert trend here) may work for some shoppers, but at this point, I really don’t want to add paper to my stash that is limiting. I have far too much of that type of paper already.

Do you think this is what is making stencils/stamps more popular again? take the basics and make your own designs?
Overall, I've been using less pp and more ink on my pages.

I have definitely noticed it whenever someone here shares the new lines. Christmas lines in particular - it's not very often that I see a new and interesting Christmas line.
It's nowhere near as repetitive in the digital scrapping world, because there are so many designers creating new collections every week. But having said that, I am buying less and less each month, and will only buy a new kit if I love the colours, and there are at least one or two pieces of paper that I love and are different from what I already have, and the element packs (embellishments) have several unique elements in them.

What grammadee said (but I don't want to type all that, lol). I love that Scrapbook Generations are designing their own lines, I feel like we have their ear and could maybe make suggestions, lol.

I've felt that way for a long time, especially on brands like EP and Doodlebug where I can't tell one year's release apart from any other (or in the case of EP's Christmas lines, I can't tell one line apart from the other). I've noticed lately on the new line share threads that I just sort of glaze over when looking at the EP releases.
I think my level of tolerance is definitely tied to how much I like/use a company's products. I know CV are very guilty of recycling patterns. I have a leaf print in three different colours from three different collections. I really like their products so I tend to accept it, but I can easily see how someone else might be bored with the repetition.
Undoubtedly some of the repetition is tied to previous success, or customer expectation. Every year on the DD thread we have peas lamenting the inclusion of pink or some other non-Christmas colour, and others bored by the traditional red and green lines.
A broader variety of designers would help. The success of Simple Vintage, and the 49 and Market lines that Katie Pertiet designed shows there is a desire for something different.

What grammadee said (but I don't want to type all that, lol). I love that Scrapbook Generations are designing their own lines, I feel like we have their ear and could maybe make suggestions, lol. I’m glad that we are noticed! We will have a new line ready for preorder a week from Monday. It is a revision of the collection I designed for We Create 2022. The revisions make it work for scrapbooking and retreats in general, plus friends. I have three more collections ready, but not sure when they will be available. I will tell you that two of the three are color-based and not theme-based. When I am designing, I’m always thinking about how this piece of paper could be used…will it look good cut in small strips…will it be a good balance for the other papers? I think because I scrapbook myself that I maybe look at things in a different way than someone who designs paper but doesn’t actually use paper. Anyway, we are very new at this, and will continue to work on niche topics that wouldn’t be profitable for the big guys. I really admire the artistic talents many of the designers have. I also understand that because we are custom printing instead of being tied into a gigantic amount of product that has to be sold, we can experiment with topics and designs in ways they can’t.

A broader variety of designers would help. Yes, this. I get tired of seeing the same designers everywhere. There is a core group of influencers/designers/artists who are on all the popular companies' design teams, and everything looks the same. I'm finding more inspiration from European companies and designers lately, as well as mixed media artists.

I think Christmas lines are particularly bad. I guess there is a limited number of colors/topics you can use for Christmas but I'd love to see some new styles. I liked the new Bella Bvd. Christmas line, even though cutesy isn't my normal style, because it was primary colors and I don't think I have another Christmas line with that color palette.
A lot of the new Christmas lines are boring, though. They look just like last years, and the years before.
Echo Park and Carte Bella definitely repeat themselves. They release a ton of lines, which I appreciate, but there are usually only one or two that I really like. Of course, Carte Bella always releases a Steven Duncan line, which has a very recognizable style, and I usually love them. So I guess I don't mind seeing the same thing over and over if it is a style I like.
I also adored Simply Vintage. I bought a ton. Again, didn't mind repeats of style/colors because it was my groove.
American Crafts definitely repeats itself, too. Every Maggie Holmes collection looks like every other one. Evidently there is a market for it but I really can't tell one from the other. I have two of her collections from way back and I haven't found the need to buy any more because at that point I'm just repeating myself. How many roses and swans does anybody need?
I actually look forward to the animal/food of the season because at least that mixes things up a bit. I make fun of it but I get excited when a line has a stoat, so I kind of feed into it, too.
I guess I like the niche lines (like the new home improvement one) because I'm like "yay! something I don't already have." New topics are always good.
Wow, that was a lot of random musings... Good topic, though.

I appreciate it when a paper company sticks to the same colors for awhile but has no designs.
The one thing I love about CP and CV is that you can use older papers with newer lines.
When I have a sheet or two left, I like to be able to use them up.
There are certain paper designs I like though every time - stripes, dots and small circles, and gradient type or distressed.

I'm finding more inspiration from European companies and designers lately, as well as mixed media artists. Exactly, that is why it is so baffling and frustrating that AC dropped Shimelle. She was the only designer they had that each collection was immediately identifiable. They also used colors no one else is using and they weren't saturated in florals or pink. VB is about the only AC designer that comes close to matching her, color wise, anyway. But their styles are both so unique there was absolutely nothing room for both. I think the non AC brands are going back towards the earlier days of scrapbooking where everything was so themed and all over prints ruled the land. Other then a few Halloween pieces and the Disney stuff I haven't had a good shop in a long time. I am just glad I could scrapbook everyday of my life and not need to shop. In the meantime I satisfy my need to shop with KP's kits and I am thankful for her.

I feel like the stay/evolve thing is a complicated line to walk for businesses in general. There will always be customers who want things to more or less remain the same: They want to keep ordering their favorite dish on the menu, buying that specific flattering cut of jeans, seeking another coordinating piece in a collection, etc. Change can be very unsettling to them. And then there are the people who want to be inspired by what is fresh, new, and different. They get bored of consistency, and if a company isn't offering anything new, they move on. While I can see repetition in the scrapbooking world, for sure, I feel like it bothers me less than when a scrapbook company evolves their aesthetic away from what initially attracted me to them. (Top of mind: Bo Bunny to all vintage, Ali Edwards' clean to messy patterns) Because I'm a please-stay-the-same person.

I understand what you are saying. I bought Simply Vintage because all of that stuff had the same aesthetic, and I liked that aesthetic. So when new Simply Vintage came out I was excited because I knew I was likely to want the new collection. You make a really good point. The industry has two totally different type of customers.
But I like these because they are not generic- there is a definite style that stands out from other lines. No one else (except 49 & Market, which has the same designer) was doing paper like that.
I think my search for novelty, however, comes from having a sizable stash. I have years worth of Christmas paper and I feel like I've already seen everything. I am always searching for a new style, or a new color palette, or a new icon. Something I don't already have. You would think I would just work through my old stash, and I do, but I love new stuff, too.

Totally agree. Looks like a lot of manufacturers are just tweaking a previous release, doesn't look very different from release to release to me.
