They used to say first thing is to sign the back... I rarely did. Just got an updated one today and there's no place for it anyway. But the one it replaced didn't have it either. I guess it's been gone for several years and I never noticed.

DH just got a new card and it doesn’t even have the card number on the front. The number is on the back, in four rows of four digits. That was new to me. ETA: there is also no space for the signature.

There's no point to a signature these days since cashiers never ask to see the card. We just tap/swipe/insert, done. Half the time people like me are in the self-checkout line anyway. -- Back in the "old days", lol, we had to hand the card to the cashier, although even then I don't recall many of them looking at the card. I know Best Buy used to, but that was about it. I'm sure that's why they did away with it.

i haven't signed the back on a CC in years, maybe even a couple of decades. I don’t sign my cards either, except one year when I went to Japan. They wouldn’t take my card until I signed it. And one time at the post office, they wouldn’t take someone’s card until they signed it. My newer cards have the numbers on the back. The numbers are no longer raised. There is still a place for a signature though. And my Apple Card doesn’t even have numbers on it or a place to sign. I have never used the physical card, so I don’t know what a merchant would do. Has anyone used an actual Apple Card at a store?

I have used my apple card at the store.. it has a chip, you can insert it or you can use the "signal" imbedded on the card. or if you need the number, you can look on your phone, under card information.. which is different number from what the number is if used electronically... (security layers).
I love my apple card

We have our credit card set to text us whenever 50 dollars or more is charged on our cards. Someone got ahold of our number once, changed to online banking in another Province, ordered thousands of dollars of electronics then booked airplane tickets. The airplane tickets were a red flag as we don’t fly. Thankfully, they didn’t pick up the electronics yet when the credit card company called us.

One of my first jobs was at a nicer department store. This was when Mastercard and Visa were still MasterCharge and BankAmericard. Whenever a customer would hand us one of those cards we had to actually look in a booklet that contained the account numbers of all the “bad cards” to make sure it wasn’t listed before we completed the transaction.

I think it was 2018 when I was taking a ferry to Islay, Scotland and the cafeteria cashier wouldn't accept my CC because I hadn't signed it. So, I borrowed her pen and signed the back. She compared my signature (that I had just signed) to the receipt (that I had also just signed) and put the transaction through. I really wish you could have seen my face.

I still have some that have a signature panel on the back, but I bet it will go away by the time those cards are replaced.
Its weird how the rules are different for different places. I can go to Michael’s and have to key in my PIN for a $6 purchase but can pump $50 worth of gas and pay at the pump just by tapping or putting the card in the chip reader.

I haven't been asked in years. I never understood it anyways, I never signed the back of mine and I think only once or twice I was asked for ID (unless in a touristy town.. they get picky)

Ever since you don’t actually give it to a person but swiped or tapped yourself, the signature became worthless.

I had to do the same thing. I was working at K-Mart as a cashier in the mid-70's while going to school, was making about $2.50 per hour I think. So I looked up this lady's number and BINGO!! it was there!! I was soo happy (again coming from a 18 year old kid) because I was supposed to get something like $25 or $50 for it which was a big deal back then. But they checked and the lady had already paid the past due amount so the card was good. So I didn't get the finder's fee but it gave me no incentive to continue looking in the little book.
