can you please share some of your process? I have an upcoming project I'd like to start (possibly in the new year, but maybe sooner) of re-creating my parents "scrapbook" from when they met, were in college, and got married.
It's about half memorabilia and half black and white photos (60+ years old). These were in 2 separate old-fashioned scrapbooks with crumbling yellowed pages. Most of the memorabilia has fallen off the pages due to the aged cellophane tape that had been used, but quite a few of the photos are still stuck onto the pages - thankfully they were not taped/glued down, only stuck into photo corners (which of course ARE glued down). I'll be definitely scanning all of the photos, but that's about the only thing I'm sure of at this point.
I have a few questions to start - I'll likely have more later on:
* Do I scan the memorabilia too? What about greeting cards? (There are a bunch from my parents wedding.) I'd want to preserve both the inside (greeting/notes and signature) and outside design.
* If I scan the memorabilia, do I print it and put the printed copy in the scrapbook or use the well-weathered original? If the latter, I think I'd need to put it inside some sort of clear protective cover to slow the wear on it and also to protect everything else it comes in contact with since I'm sure most (all) of it contains acid, lignin, non-safe dyes, etc.
* Same question for the photos - do I scrap the re-printed scans instead of the originals?
* If I'm scrapping reprinted scans, what can I do with the originals?
* Some of the existing [crumbling/faded/yellowed] pages have my Mom's notes, captions, & titles on them. What can I do to preserve those and somehow incorporate them into the new pages? Cut them out, scan them, and print them on cardstock to use as tags and other embellishments?
* Once the book is completed, I'd like to figure out a way to make digital copies of it for my siblings (although of course I'll also be sharing the scans of everything with them already). Any advice on doing this? Is this even possible? Especially since I scrap 12x12?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice and suggestions! If you've done this (or a similar project) please weigh in with your process - what worked, what didn't work, what you'd do differently next time, etc.
