Lol no. There’s nothing more to it. It’s doesn’t make sense. It’s Texas. Our leadership honestly thinks that providing DNA sample kits to the parents of 8 year olds is an appropriate response to school shootings.

It makes me sick to my stomach. Abbot needs to go.

So they can identify the remains more quickly at the next school massacre.
May Abbot and friends rot in hell!
(This, btw, is not an endorsement of the procedure)

And Texans will re-elect Abbott. You can’t blame that on gerrymandering. Texas is so deeply disturbing.

I sadly live in Texas and there is NO WAY IN HELL that I am allowing them to get a DNA sample from children. I will pull them from public education if it is required. Beto has gained a lot in the polls recently and I'm praying it's enough. I know if probably won't be but I do think there are a lot of pissed of Texans right now. Also, the second my kids are out of the house we will move out of this crazy state!

Also, the second my kids are out of the house we will move out of this crazy state! I was discussing this with my sister the other day, who’s in the process of a divorce. She wants to move out of the town she’s in, but feels like she needs to stay until the kids are out of the house. I told her that she already has one adult child who is settled in that town, and the longer she waits, the more likely that more of her kids will, as well, which will make it even harder to leave. Sincere question: What makes it worth it to stay there, essentially giving your kids roots there, too? Not that I think anyone should move just because they don’t like the political climate, but if you think the state is crazy and want to move yourself, what are you waiting for? Also, I hope Beto wins.🤞🏻

Beto has gained a lot in the polls recently and I'm praying it's enough Beto just seems like a guy who is in it for all the right reasons. I wish there were more like him. I pray he wins.

We love the variety of cultures here, particularly the food. We love the music and the arts and the sports and the warm winters. We’ve lived our entire adult lives here and raised our kids here, and now they’re both in college here. Unfortunately, Houston is in Texas. No getting around that. But Texas as a whole is beautiful. Up until the Trump era, it was conservative, but nothing like we see now. We love the landscape(s). So many beautiful places to visit and explore. Great cities, each with their own unique character and charm. Beyond our own preferences, we do feel some obligation to stay here and work for a better Texas. Many millions of people can’t just afford to leave. They shouldn’t be abandoned by those who have the means to go. Texas can be better than this. It would be a shame to abandon such a wonderful state to only right-wing people. So for now, we stay and fight.

I don't know if this was stated as a reason for the law, but I remember this case in particular. This poor girl was in the hospital for several days at least I think before anyone realized that they had misidentified her. Mistaken ID victim describes struggleThere are also videos of tornadoes ripping through Texas schools, as it did in Jacksboro in March 2022. Security video shows moments EF-3 tornado tears through Texas schoolNot to mention hurricanes and flash floods. I'm not saying I agree with the law, or that I actually know anything about it. I'm just trying to help it make sense like you asked.

I moved a junior in HS, an 8th grader and a 5th grader. It was an excruciating year for all of them. It took a long time to get settled and for them to start finding friends and we still have a long way to go. We promised our kids we would not move again until they had all graduated from HS. I doubt my kids will move back here. I guess it's possible but I now have two kids in college out of state so I think it's unlikely they'll come back here (where they don't even really have friends or roots).

It makes me sick to my stomach. Abbot needs to go. Disgusting. Horrifying. I saw this on the tv news at my nail salon today. The local news (Texas) is so upsetting, that I very rarely watch it. My phone will tell me what my weather is going to be. Pretty much all I can handle at this point. Whoever came up with the catch phrase - God Bless Texas, wasn’t kidding.

Children and teens adapt.

I would never intentionally put my teenagers through it again (even though I hate TX politics). Yes, kids can adapt but it comes with a price.

The National Child Protection Program as been around since 1997. FBI article and NCPP. My DS is 44, when he was about 4 or 5 the county police offered a similar program. Your could have your child photographed, fingerprinted, and list identifying features. They then gave you a card like a drivers license with all the info on it. I still have my son’s card.

Spent most of my life here and it was not this extreme until Trump. I do think Beto has a fighting chance - and that is coming from someone who leans pre-trump conservative. Brene Brown just hosted Beto on a podcast and it was wonderful and she provided a unique platform for him to get in front of a larger demographic. He was so authentic and endearing. I am hopeful. We really really need our young voters to turn out.

I don't think adult children will appreciate having had their DNA sent to be kept on file by a government entity without their consent. If, God forbid, your child becomes an unrecognizable victim (apparently that's okay with the gun lunatics) needing to be identified, you'll have DNA from his hairbrush and toothbrush. What a horrible prospect to thrust before parents (shudder).

Could the parents collect items, hair, a baby tooth, and hold it at home for later use?
That might be a reasonable choice. Held by the authorities, no, no way!!

I highly doubt that most Texans would want the government to have their DNA. They cried about "freedom" with masks and vaccinations for years.

I'm so over this overreaching government controlled state. I live in Texas. I actually loved it pre-Trump. But now, I can't wait to get out. I feel I have no other choice. My kids are not safe here. I've been active with the local Democrats for years. I've tried "fighting the fight". But when the government consistently shows me what they are capable of, I have to be a realist. Unless Beto actually pulls it off, I am out of here. marist poll

Hopefully lots of moderates feel the same and turn out to vote. The Texas conservatism I recall is that of the Bush family. Doesn’t it seem so quaint and reasonable now? No glossing over some big mistakes both made as presidents and a lot of policies I might disagree with, but dang, they weren’t just actively evil like this crew. If we can’t turn Texas blue, it’s my hope that we can get back to that.
