My first thought when the BBC News alert popped up on my phone
And a serious question for the UK peas. They are saying a new leader within a week. Does that mean they don't have to go through the whole run off then full party vote rigmarole again?

Does that mean they don't have to go through the whole run off then full party vote rigmarole again? That seems to be the plan but the whole situation is so chaotic I don’t think any one can confirm it with absolute certainty. There are going to be many people who will want the opportunity of voting and right now I personally don’t see why on earth they should be denied but I reckon it’s a case of watch this space. What is announced now could very easily be different by dinner time.

I was never a fan of Truss and am not sad she's going, but wow. One mistake and boom you are out. That is overwhelming. Did she do anything right? Did she have time in 6 weeks?

Did she do anything right? Nope. Did she have time in 6 weeks? She had enough time to make some monumental balls ups.

If it was only one mistake, then yes, it would be unfair. But she actually hasn’t done a single thing in six weeks that hasn’t made things worse.

I don’t think anyone would deny she had one hell of a difficult job to do and in many/most situations you expect someone new to a job to have a settling in period. However she basically came in and threw all the cards in the air and when it was made clear to her that her actions were damaging the economy and causing a lot of financial hardship to the population she reversed the decisions. The markets have calmed a little but there has been no good news for the population who are continuing to struggle with higher prices and higher interest rates. Her actions were wrong and she changed her mind countless times; there was no consistency and no understanding of the consequences to her actions.

Oh there are so many ‘ fun facts’…
She was in office for less days than her campaign lasted. This is the first time there’s been 3 PMs within one government term…

Um, any truth to the story Boris is throwing his hat in the race again? There are those who want him to, who think he is an election winner and could be again, and those who are justifiably horrified! Nothing official yet either way.

Liz Truss is still PM until the new one is chosen. He may well be en route to decide whether he wants to run again or not but that's not just dependent on him. Potential candidates will need to have 100 backers by Monday and it's thought he might struggle with that.

I think they should support a general election. Boris resigned due to scandals and mis steps a-plenty. I think they have demonstrated that they are a mess and cannot agree within the party on policy and what to do. I sadly think that Labour will not have the support to call a vote of no confidence and call an election. A mess does not really start to describe it.

Completely off topic, but I really dislike the pillar of the lectern. Everytime I see it, I think ugh, just off looking.

She has made things so much worse for so many people but had the nerve to sound hard done by in her resignation speech. The reporters weren’t mincing their words last night when describing her brief time in office.

He didn't resign his seat in Parliament or as a member of the Conservative party, just as leader which made him the Prime Minister. Any Member of Parliament can throw their name in the mix if they get 100 other Conservative members to nominate/support them by Monday. The closest equivalent in the US would be John Boehner resigning as Speaker of the House. He did resign his seat at the same time, but could have stayed on as a Representative and run for Speaker again if Paul Ryan has stepped down for some reason.
