I've really been enjoying making cards lately and want to start a cardstock stash to have on hand when the creative urge strikes.
Any recommendations on how to go about building a stash? Brands that are great or ones to avoid? How about building out a collection of color? Should I go for a pack of multiple colors? How about glitter cardstock? I found a few pieces of 12x12 glittery black in my scrapbook stash that I've used on a few Halloween cards and would like to replace it.
(I do have a ream of Neenah solar white .. though not sure it it's 80 or 110 lb).
Thanks!

I buy all my cardstock from Create for Less and order once a year, since it's free shipping if you spend $100 and they are located in Oregon so no sales tax.
I buy the Paper Accents brand and never had a problem with it, except on of the gray colors does not cut very well with my Silhouette, otherwise no complaints.
But I have been known to buy the multi-color packs at Target as well...

Thanks for the suggestion- I’m not familiar with the brand. The color saturation and paper quality are good?

I find that the HL multi-packs don't cut as well as the M's ones. The textured hot buys cardstock from M's I really like but it's hit or miss on availability. Getting single sheets when Joann's has their paper 10/$2 is the easiest route there. My favourites are Bazzil - I didn't care for the new brand that TM brought it Violet Studio or something like that? it frays terribly even with a fresh blade.

Whatever brand you pick, get solid-core coloured cardstock. Nothing screams 'low quality' like white edges after cutting non-white paper. Other than that I find most of it to be half a dozen of one, six of another. Get whatever is the most affordable option on offer of 150-200gsm cardstock.
I have a drawer of scrap sized pieces from the dollar store when they sold packs of mixed colours that I draw on pretty often for paper piecing. The multicolour themed packs are good for colours you aren't going to use as often. If I had to rebuild a collection from scratch I'd grab mixed greens and browns/neutrals first. They get used on almost anything that is animal/nature related. If you like flowers, get your favourite pink/blue/yellow/purple mixes. Do a lot of ocean/water/sky? Mixed blues. Critters? Muted browns, blacks, greys, creams and russets. Pull out the cards you make (or pictures of things you want to make) and get a feel for what colours are dominant.
Most of my branded cardstock is Michael's or Bazzil, they're both fine. Usually I grab the 8/5x11" stuff because it's easier to store than 12x12. I have a hanging folio thing that's divided up by colour family that works quite nicely for the purpose next to my workspace.
I'm not a fan of glitter paper unless it's 100% no shed. Recollections has some in their singles open stock, I've also found adhesive glitter washi type sheets at the dollar store.

I just use Michael's white and their foil paper packs. I'm mainly a scrapbooker who makes the random card so I have plenty of color cardstock scraps to use. I do like to buy the 6x6 paper pads when I find them to use for cards since the prints are scaled down.

Since you're into card making, do you have a favorite line of inks that you use? If so, does that company also make cardstock? Getting some cardstock that matches your inks might be one way to go. It's definitely not the most cost effective plan, but I really like being able to match my cardstock to my inks. Right now I'm collecting Taylored Expressions cardstock to match their inks. I've recently become addicted to stencils, and for me, TE ink really handles stencils well. I'm buying by holiday right now. For example, I bought a Christmas stencil set and bought full sized pads of the inks I'll need and a couple of matching cardstock colors. If I add to my stash one set of colors at a time, it becomes manageable.

I buy a mixture of stuff and have also inherited other people's random cardstock... I would say that getting colors that you personally enjoy creating with should be a priority. I have used a lot of ugly colors that didn't speak to me and I'd really prefer not to do that in the future. I agree with lindamh that matching cardstock to the inks you enjoy can be a good option. Another would be using the inks you have to color the white cardstock you already have as you need it (direct to paper or ink blending). You will need reinkers if you go that route. One cardmaker I follow, Ardyth, uses a lot of cardstock heavy designs but colors almost all of it herself (an example video) but it saves storing a stash of cardstock and it matches the inks you're using perfectly. May work better if you like starting with a white card. One of my friends is on the DT for 12x12 cardstock shop www.12x12cardstock.shop/ and the speciality papers she uses are amazing - holographic, shimmer, glitter, and all the other fun stuff. I find their selection a little overwhelming so I haven't ordered from them yet. I usually just buy a few sheets of Bazzil from Joann's to match the papers I'm using or get a Doodlebug pack (or similar brand) that's designed to match the collection. I bought the Scrapbook.com "cardstock" packs in card size pads when they were first released but they were a lot thinner than I expected and they're not my go-to. And even with all the shades I got they often don't match what I need.

I buy the packs of Michael’s CS. It’s a good weight, a variety of colors, and goes on sale frequently. Once you have some basics, you will see where the gaps are that you need to fill in.

I look for sales at Gina K, Spellbinders and Hero Arts and also toss in a pack or two of a color I want/need when I’m buying something else from their sites. I like the thicker, heavier weights of their cardstock for making cards.

For white I use Neenah Solar White. For kraft, Neenah Desert Storm. For black, either Lawn Fawn Black Licorice or Hero Arts Pitch Black. Colored cardstock MFT, Gina K, Hero Arts and Lawn Fawn.
I would look into buying colored cardstock the same brand and colors as your inks.
Oh I almost forgot because its a new-ish brand for me But Taylored Expressions has really nice cardstock and inks.

I'm not a cardmaker, but cardstock is my most used (& favorite) scrapbooking supply. Consider purchasing Bazzill &/or Core-dinations cardstock by the sheet during 10/$2 open stock paper sales at JoAnn or packs of Recollection cardstock at Michael's when included in weekly sales. You also may want to cross-post on the Stamping sub-board for cardstock suggestions from seasoned cardmakers.

I looked at the companies that sold cardstock and went with the colour palette I liked. I really liked Spellbinders so that's what I bought. They have a starter pack with a mix of colours. The quality is really good.
I also bought a Hero Arts multipack - it's card front size. Their colours are great, and great quality, too.
So those two would be my main recommendations.
FTR, I do love the Stamp Market's colour palette and bought their cardstock as well, but it's thinner and I don't think as good a starter cardstock as the others.
