Ok well I know why, it was because I was intimidated by the stripping process. I’d seen methods using lye baths, oven cleaner and trash bags, and electrolysis. But after I saw someone suggest the self cleaning feature on your oven I decided to use that method to strip two Griswold frying pans that I have had for over 25 years. They were really built up already when I inherited them from my grandma. I hate using the self cleaning feature on the oven but it really did the trick! The pans look soooooo nice now! And now that have I successfully reseasoned the pans I am going to tackle a very old (possibly 19th c?) 4 gallon pot that I was gifted. I kind of regret not taking before and after pictures of the frying pans.
It is kind of silly how proud I am of doing this lol.

I have a 10 inch frying pan with a cast iron lid I picked up at an estate sale for $5. It is gross. I've been waiting for our kitchen remodel (starts at the beginning of the new year) because the new stove has a self-cleaning feature. I'll be sure to take before and after pics!

New oven being installed on Monday, so I'll have to try this on a couple of my old skillets. Did you leave all the racks in the oven? My last oven recommended removing them for the self-clean feature.

I just cleaned my oven last week using the self cleaning feature. I was also advised to take out the racks. In a previous stove I did leave them in and they got that grey/dusty finish on them like when you put aluminum in the dishwasher. They were no longer shiny.
This time I did put them in a garbage bag and sprayed them with oven cleaner. I left them overnight. In the morning all the gunk washed right off.

Hooray for re seasoned pans! I remember years ago when I first started posting on NSBR I was struggling with rust/seasoning my cast iron pans and got lots of good advice.
Fast forward to 20 years later and my pans are wonderfully seasoned now and will be heirlooms I imagine. Funny, they were inexpensive K-Mart Martha Stewart line pans. I remember being annoyed with myself that I didn't just buy Lodge that came pre seasoned but it became a challenge for me to get these pans seasoned! I doubt they'll ever be collectables because they are just KMart pans but meh. I love them.
I just bought a Helen Chen stir fry wok that's carbon steel and that's been a bitch to get seasoned but I'm working on it. Damn rust spots keep popping up. And the problem with it is the handles are wood. I read on a Reddit thread that you could wrap the handles in foil and try seasoning in a slow oven but my handles just blackened. Oh well, I'll keep at it, they just aren't as pretty anymore but IDC.

I will have to give this a try on a couple of my vintage cast iron pieces. I have one that I haven't cooked with because it was pretty grubby, and I didn't get around to cleaning and seasoning it yet. I hope this oven has a self-cleaning feature or I will have to go another way.

I doubt they'll ever be collectables because they are just KMart pans but meh. The stuff I got at KMart back in the Martha days was good stuff! I loved the towels, sheets, and kitchen accessories that I got there. I really felt like KMart got a bad deal - I thought that stuff was great! I loved the Martha Stewart paint colors, but I did have my local hardware store do the color match.

I had fun buying up sets of cheap dishes and there is a table cloth that I bought when her line was introduced that I have to this day. It's got a white background and a turquoise blue ribbon running through it and it's just darling. It's got wine spots and a cigarette hole burned into it in one spot. It's been a part of so many fun dinner parties in my youth, its absolutely sentimental. I have searched Ebay occasionally for that print again but I've never found it again.

I was sick when I learned someone threw out my Nana's cast iron skillet when she passed away. They thought it was old and damaged. No, it just needed to be stripped with some TLC. I had even asked for it and gotten reactions along the lines of "You've got to be kidding, gross."
These babies will outlast us if they're taken care of.
