He does say it.
I really don’t know what to say about this. No pithy remarks. I guess that I’m sad we have reached this level of what? Disgust?

This is what people say about comments like DeSantis made? “🦗”.
And that’s the problem.

I would ask him why. Why is it wrong? If your answer comes from the Bible, it has no place in forming public education policy.
And I would ask him what he expects schools to do with kids who come in with their parents and say they will be presenting as a different gender this year.

The huge problem is that when politicians say ridiculous things like this no one asks any intelligent follow up questions. When I watch this type of crap spewed by the right on tv I end up shouting at the reporter/interviewer, why the hell don't you ask them to explain themselves? I can usually think, of several questions that would shut that shit down and no one asks.

I have a huge problem with the separation of Church and State.
Not everyone lives by or believes in the Bible. They are still American citizens with the right to believe whatever they want. What the Bible says has no place in public school. Christianity should be given no more weight than any other religion. I am a Christian, but I don’t want the school curriculum teach my kids religion. The school’s responsibility is to teach kids tolerance of people who don’t believe as they do. Even Christianity is not one size fits all.
DeSantis is a class A jerk hiding behind Bible. He is not fit to hold any public office.

As a parent I would listen to my child. I would not tell them or ask them to pick a gender. We would discuss it.
Kids know better then adults do.
Of course teachers should not tell kids they can choose. If a child asks they should be directed to their parents.
ETA: with teens I would suggest they speak to their parents or their doctor. Calling them out at school is not appropriate.

the scary thing is that many people believe this and agree with him.

From what I have witnessed at the schools my kid has attended, in elementary it was never addressed at all. Kids are called whatever the parents write on their intake forms. In middle school the teachers ask the kid what name/nickname they prefer to have used in class. That’s basically the extent of it. So if your kid’s name is John but prefers to be called Johnny or Bubba, that’s totally fine by them. If John prefers to be called Buffy, nobody cares about that either. My kid has kids in her class that go by Ace, Egg and other nicknames too. 🤷🏻♀️ It’s middle school. We roll with it.

Calling them out at school is not appropriate. It’s not a matter of telling kids that they can choose. It’s a matter of teaching acceptance of those who have - without the school’s input - already chosen. But DeSantis doesn’t want that, either. The world has changed, and somehow DeSantis wants to put it on the public schools to change it back. That’s not what we’re here for. The parents who accept their child as a gender other than assigned at birth deserve the same consideration as the parents who don’t want that for their children. It’s not our place to judge either way, but it is our duty to make sure that every child feels safe and welcome at school.

I was just responding to the comment while DeSantis was campaigning for Zeldin posted above where he said ' "it is wrong to teach children it is their choice" That's all . Sorry
"It is wrong to teach these young kids that their gender is a choice ... We've drawn a line in the sand on that in the state of Florida.""
