KBJ showing again why she was an excellent choice for the supreme court. She basically asked if it was OK for admissions to give preference for legacy students but not preference to other students for race. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/31/ketanji-brown-jackson-legacies-affirmative-action/Jackson’s riddle: One applicant writes in his essay that it is important to him that he be admitted because his family has lived in North Carolina since before the Civil War and he would be the fifth generation of his family to proudly attend UNC. Another applicant writes that his family, too, has lived in North Carolina since before the Civil War, and it is important to him that he attend UNC because he is the descendant of enslaved people and his ancestors were barred from attending the university. Was Strawbridge arguing that the university could give preference to the first candidate but not to the second?
Strawbridge hemmed and hawed, but acknowledged that, yes, that was his position. He said nothing prohibits “honoring those who have overcome slavery or recognizing its past contribution to racial segregation,” in other contexts but that this is not “a basis to make decisions about admission of students who are born in 2003.”

The second applicant whose family lived there for five generations couldn't get legacy admission because his/her family had been denied admission because of the color of their skin!!

Clever, but I fear that her point will be “overlooked” by some of the conservative Justices. They are in control, andI believe that they mean to use that power. I hope that my low opinion of their agenda is wrong.

Alito has made his point!! But of course they don't pay attention to or listen to public comments . Supreme Court Justice Samual Alito used oral arguments on Monday to take a veiled shot at claims that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has Native American ancestry. At one point, Alito questioned North Carolina Solicitor General Ryan Park on college admission practices. For several minutes, the justice demanded to know what the bar was for being considered a Native American. *** "We rely on self-reporting," Park explained concerning a student's race. "One great-grandparent," Alito said. "Are you going to make me continue to go on? *** "Right, I think that as we go on, I agree that it would seem less plausible that that person would feel that this is actually capturing my true racial identity," Park explained. "It's family lore that we have an ancestor who was an American Indian," Alito said, referring to Warren.*** "I identify as American Indian because I've always been told that some ancestor back in the old days was an American Indian," Alito offered. Park agreed that it would be "very unlikely that that person was telling the truth." www.rawstory.com/samuel-alito-elizabeth-warren/
