We apparently we have a genetic flaw in the raccoons that live around us. A baby and adult with no tail are here. The baby, its mother and sibling come around to beg for food. The mother has a tail. An adult with no tail came around last night.
We have a game camera and photo the wildlife that frequent our creek bank. Any table scraps are shared with the animals. We also put out 2 cups of dog food for them each night. The mother recognizes that we are the food source and will come to the patio door to remind us she is here.

Please be careful feeding raccoons- it can make them aggressive. Our dog was nearly killed by raccoons our neighbors had been feeding because they thought she was too close to their food (even though she was on our side of the fence and minding her Own business, peeing in the middle of the night). It was very scary.

We live in the country and absolutely DO NOT feed raccoons. They get into whatever they can and make a big mess. Raccoons will kill chickens. People actually trap and kill them - it's legal.

how crazy! for some reason, the way the baby raccoon with no tail stands reminds me of a kangaroo... Off to google 'raccoon with no tail' to see if there is any info, lol.

I was thinking rabbit while sitting, not walking.. Missing tail can be genetic. Run over by a car. Sibling fight when little, or as an adult. Caught in a trap...

Have you seen the video of the man in Canada that sits on his patio and feeds dozens of hotdogs to a bunch of raccoons? It is insane! He actually gives them to the raccoons by hand! It scares me for him, especially when you hear them growling at each other after he has gone inside. He also feeds the birds and deer. While they do seem to wait for him to serve them, it still could turn bad in a hot minute. The raccoons behind him on the fence are the ones that make me the most nervous because they are so close to his face. I think he said he feeds them 8 pounds of hotdogs at a time and 2 bags of grapes. They went through that and he had to go inside to get more! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ofp26_oc4CA

Racoons are so cute, but they're so vicious. I wonder why nature created them that way?

I had no idea some of them did not have tails!
We have raccoons in our neighborhood and I thought they were cute until one decided to make my attic into their home....cost me $3000 to get it removed and have the damage repaired!

We have four raccoons that live in our yard. They are carved. Best kind to have. We also have a very real raccoon, skunk and bear that take turns visiting on the wildlife cameras. The skunk used to live under our shed, but moth balls stopped that right away.
I think the tailless raccoons look a bit like my corgis.

Interesting…. Not a fan of raccoons. Was nipped by a “tame” one that jumped up on me and nipped my arm. I was trying to walk away from it and I guess it thought I had food (others were feeding it, I definitely was not). Almost 40 years ago but still don’t like them. Also, they think my Dh’s deer corn feeder is a raccoon buffet! They are cute, but definitely at a distance for me.

It’s actually harmful for raccoons to be fed by humans- it causes many issues. Please google it and reconsider. You aren’t actually helping them.

We have raccoons in our neighborhood and I thought they were cute until one decided to make my attic into their home....cost me $3000 to get it removed and have the damage repaired! What kind of damage do raccoons do in an attic? Do they chew wood, insulation or wiring? Or pee on the insulation requiring that you replace it? I don't know much about them other than they are smart and can open trash cans and make a huge mess. I always put weights on top of the,, trash can and also on my worm bins. I figured they would think my worms were a great appetizer and would smell the scraps of vegetables I put in there as well. I braced the worm bin up so it couldn't be tipped over and then weighed the top down to keep them out. I did have group of 5 visit my backyard in California one night. We were watching a movie when my dog heard something in the back yard. I opened the curtains to see this family of five of them. They were not scared of us at all! They were coming right up to the sliding glass door and putting their little hands on it and peering inside. Yes, they are cute, but all I could think of was fleas and possible disease that my dog could get when I let him out back again. They refused to be chased off. The next day I scrubbed the window and the cement with diluted bleach water just in case they were carrying something. I also put extra chlorine in the pool. I pictured them washing snails off in my pool like they did his pond. I know they wash their food off before eating it because my next door neighbor has a little pond and he said they would turn over the big rocks looking for bugs and then the water in the pond would be filthy with snail shells and bits of dog food. He called me once to see if I ever left dog food outside. I told him I would never do that and then allow my dog to eat it after who knows what had been crawling in it or leaving saliva on it. We finally found it was the neighbor on the other side of him. He asked them to please take the dog food bowl inside at night, but they were really hit and miss with it.

We finally found it was the neighbor on the other side of him. He asked them to please take the dog food bowl inside at night, but they were really hit and miss with it. We caught our raccoon pretty early but it had chewed a hole in our garage drywall ceiling to get into the attic and they do make a "latrine" area where they do their business. Our wildlife removal person said it was likely it had only been in there a short time based on the waste they found and was attracted because we had our cat's food in the garage (she was an outdoor cat, previously a stray, but had food & litter box in the garage & slept there at night). We brought her inside so there was no more food source for them and started keeping our garage door closed during the day. The same wildlife company had just removed 5 raccoons from another house in my neighborhood so ours could have been from that group. I'm glad we caught it before it did a lot of damage. I'm not sure I would ever known it was in there but my husband wakes up really early and he could hear it/something tumbling around in the morning. The $3000 was for the removal but also they went around the exterior of our house and closed up and repaired any possibly way a critter might be entering the attic. After they repaired the hole in the garage ceiling we found a new smaller hole the next day & they said it looked like it was trying to get back in but had given up. That one was repaired as well. A few weeks before this happened we had a juvenile raccoon in our front yard during the day just walking around by our porch (probably looking for food/water). When I went outside it ran up a tree but then came back down & went to my next door neighbors. She feeds the stray cats in our neighborhood (which is fine - I have no problem with that) & I think it was looking for that food.

I see videos of people who have raccoons for pets and all I can think of is "But their claws can tear things up!" my high school boyfriend found a baby one and they were keeping it as a pet... then my dad (who was a taxidermist) showed me an article about how raccoons can carry some rare parasite that can cause blindness and brain damage. That was the end of me thinking it was cute.

Maybe it wasn't born that way but lost it? Either way, it's stinking cute.
The family that lives in my condo complex is fed by one of my neighbors. One day I had a Petco package delivery with cat food in it. I didn't get it in the house quick enough and the racoons tore into the package after the food.
The squirrels at my school don't have bushy tails. It's only the back half of the campus that is that way. The squirrels on the front half of campus have bushy tails.

Racoons are so cute, but they're so vicious. I wonder why nature created them that way? Survival. If you want to see vicious - watch a badger. Lord, they scare the daylights out of me. When I see one, I go the other was as fast as possible. What kind of damage do raccoons do in an attic? Do they chew wood, insulation or wiring? Or pee on the insulation requiring that you replace it? They can chew, rip, and tear holes in your house faster than you can imagine. They can absolutely destroy a house once they get inside, and they WILL get inside. Don't feed racoons.

And remember once they are inside the little ones, particularly, can fall down into the walls between the studs and die there. The parents will tear through everything to get to them though.
Do not use poison of any kind, call an exterminator!

We had a raccoon that managed to get into the overhang roof on our front porch while we were doing an addition on the house years ago. He pulled away all the insulation from the house wall and we could hear him scratching trying to get into my son's bedroom. We had a heck of a time getting rid of him! Finally we had to wait & watch for him to go out to hunt food, and then quick close up the hole he was getting into. When he came back he sat there for a long time trying to figure out how to get back in.My husband tried to scare him away by shooting at him with a nail gun (we don't do real guns) and the nails would barely even scratch him, his fur was so thick and he wasn't the least bit scared of us.
Raccoons are a major pest, can be very destructive and vicious & I would NEVER feed one it just encourages them to come back & be even more bold

That was the end of me thinking it was cute. I had no idea about the parasite. I will have to warn my neighbor that has the pond. And now I don't feel so paranoid about disinfecting my patio area after seeing 5 of them back there. My neighbor laughed at me when I told him. He could smell the bleach and asked me what I was doing. Honestly, my fear was more for fleas than anything else and I figured the bleach would kill any cooties and discourage the raccoons from coming back there. I never saw them again, which is probably more about not finding anything to eat rather than not liking the bleach smell. I have never kept food outside, but I had the pool and I over the years had seen many creatures drinking from it. You would think the chlorine would discourage them, but it didn't appear to do so.
