Or does it not matter? I am working on my 13 Iceland Santas goodies and will be using embossed paper that I will cut into a shape for one of the goodies.
So is there a preferred way?

I emboss first and then cut. That way, the edges will be flat as the die will flatten them.
If you're not using a die to cut them, I don't think it matters. Try both, and see which one you like better.

I cut, then emboss. Otherwise the die cut machine flattens the embossing too much for my liking. FWIW, I watched a Jennifer McG earlier today, she also cuts then embosses.

I do the same as MichyM. Like Michy, I find that the embossing flattens out if I run it through the machine again. I figured that out long before Jennifer McGuire did.

I like to emboss first, then cut the shape. If the die is really intricate, I still do it that way.
