congratulations!!! I was kind of in the same boat- we got married after being together 15 years, and it was just us and two witnesses. So I didn't want a 'wedding' dress, but something fancier than my usual. I made an appointment with a personal shopper at one of the larger Nordstrom's stores in the area. We first talked on the phone so I could tell her what I was looking for and the occasion, and she sent me links to a few dresses from their store online. I told her which ones I liked, didn't like, and why... and when I got to the appointment she had at least 4-6 dresses ready in different sizes, based on what I had told her. She even helped me pick out proper undergarments, jewelry, and shoes. (fyi, this service is free- I think they get commission on what they sell, but I didn't feel pressured by her at ALL. I used her services a couple other times, and she picked out items that I never would have, based on what she thought would look flattering on me. And she was right. I didn't buy everything she had selected, but I would definitely use their personal shopper service again.) totally agree with this service. We've used it for our daughters first jobs - their first "professional" wardrobes. The shoppers are great and very low-pressure. I have to chime in in using Nordstrom’s service. They were fantastic. I used them once and my situation was a bit different. My MIL died and we lived out of state. We had to go back for the funeral. I had gained weight, and nothing I had in my closet fit. I didn’t have time to shop. I made an appointment at Nordstrom for the next day and they were great. They pulled several items, I tried everything on, and left an hour later with two outfits and no added stress.

I might like to wear cute cowboy boots if I find the right dress for it. So are you looking for something a little more casual & fun? Lace? Layers? Color? Congratulations!

I like the Mac Duggal, because of the cut and the pattern of flowers over the solid underskirt. I like the "beige blush" color.
I like the Eliza J for the same reason, except that sheer neckline is too high. I'd be clawing at it.
Thanks for hunting for these for me!

I like it, too, but it's more formal than my personality.

my dress was something like this style: Komarov handkerchief hem cocktail dress. (I think it was this brand, actually... it's an unusual brand name that stuck in my mind.) I did NOT think I would look good in it (I'm overweight and have a larger bust), but the personal shopper took me and the dress to the undergarments section of the store, and that seriously made ALL the difference. (since I'm only 5 ft 4, it was a bit longer on me than the model picture shows.) We also found a white denim jacket to go over it, in case it was chilly at the forest preserve. With the denim jacket to make it a bit more casual, I totally could wear cowboy boots with it if I want.

Congratulations! Wishing you much happiness.
I really like the Bloomingdale's fit and flare dresses linked above, especially the rose-ish one.
If I ever need a fancy dress for a truly special event I want one like the ones worn by Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen at the beginning of White Christmas. I just love the poufy skirts. Of course my waist is nowhere near as tiny as Vera Ellen's.
Can't wait to see pics of your selection!

find a lacy shawl to go over your shoulders, or a short-sleeve bolero-style open-weave sweater, perhaps? (I can picture what I mean in my head, but I don't know the right term for it.) a *shrug* is the term for it, I think?

Think about your favorite color... It does not have to be white, cream or even neutral...
Have something you put on and feel like a million bucks. I did that once for an event. I knew the minute I put it on, I wanted to twirl.
Yay you!!

(I can picture what I mean in my head, but I don't know the right term for it.) a *shrug* is the term for it, I think? And a lot of dressmakers can add sleeves or a little lace cap or something, too. It may be worth actually going to a bridal salon if you feel like it. It might be a fun chance to be traditional for an afternoon and get spoiled, but they do have alternatives for brides that aren't 25 and wanting a mermaid or princess gown. They can also give you ideas for alteration possibilities. You don't have to buy anything there if you don't like it, but you could get a feel for likes/dislikes and possible tweaks you like. I also agree with the Nordstrom idea - I've seldom seen people go wrong with them in these types of situations. Do what makes YOU feel special and beautiful! Not what someone else tells you "should" make you feel that way. You may be objectively gorgeous to whomever, but you need to feel that way inside. And YAY! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
