omg.... Just venting here, because I can't on facebook....
I had 32 orders for cookies this weekend. I make sure to tell them all that any time between 10 & 12 is good for picking up (I don't want to be sitting in my cake space all day waiting)
31 of them are all picked up. #32 called at 11:58 to get directions, so I figured half an hour wasn't too much longer. When they hadn't shown by 1:00 I called...they were just leaving. "Is this too early?" I said no, it was actually to be between 10 & 12....but I said I would wait.
they just called, they are stuck on the other side of town because the police have the roads closed. Yep, because of the Santa clause parade today. So then I had to try and explain a new way here.
sigh....I have a million errands to run this afternoon!

You're better than I am. But I'm feeling rather crochety at the moment and have no patience for stupid people. So frustrating. I'm sorry you're dealing with idiots.

Next time tell them you're closed at noon and if the items aren't picked up they will be out of luck. Kind of like the Thanksgiving Turkey of legend.

So, I ordered cookies for a Christmas party three weeks ago. The party is at 6. I go to pick up the cookies and they f$@king closed. I mean I ordered them and everything. I told the person the party date and time and that I would need them by then. She should have told me then that they close at noon on Saturdays. Who the hell picks up cookies EARLY? I'm going there first thing Monday morning to scream at these people. Heads are going to roll. Then I am going to stand out front with a sign telling people to shop elsewhere.

I said no, it was actually to be between 10 & 12....but I said I would wait. Next time (because there more than likely will be a 'next time'), remember that the first time they called was your opportunity to 'remind' them that pick up was between 10 and 12 and ask how long they would be as you would hate for them to turn up and find no-one home. That in itself should have prevented the second opportunity, but anyway - when you phoned them and they said 'is this too early?', you should have said that it was too late, but you would be happy to make a great concession for them to pick up at whatever-O'clock suited you. Alternatively, state on your order confirmation that the 'office' is only open between the hours of X and Y on a weekend/Saturday..... that kind of wording tends to make people more worried about getting to you on time - nice and official sounding!! The great news is that you weren't stuck in the overflow of traffic from the parade so you should probably throw in a free cookie for them saving you that pain!! LOL

I would add a surcharge to the order for late pickup.

I would add a surcharge to the order for late pickup. Nah - you'd WANT to, just before you remembered word of mouth, on-line reviews and repeat orders!!

Yes, I can definitely understand your frustration. The worst thing (for me) is having my schedule being mucked up by someone else's lack of consideration. And in the small business category, you HAVE to be nice, simply for repeat business and also for recommendations.

LOL You're right - I absolutely should have mentioned times when they called. I just assumed they were on their way. My fault. It just ticks me off that I make sure to tell everybody (phone or email) that pick-up is between 10 & 12. It is just part of my address/directions spiel. But people don't read or listen completely. Ack!

You close at noon.
Leave at noon and don't worry about it.
The end.

You close at noon. Leave at noon and don't worry about it. The end. That works, except for the fact that I work from home, so if they get no answer at my cake shop door, they can ring the front bell and bug my family. One of the small drawbacks from working at home!

Even if you had mentioned your hours to them on the first phone call I bet they would still have been late only they would have just asked you to wait for them. I run into that all the time working for small businesses. Like the business should be SO grateful for their order that we need to bend over backwards and change all policies and hours to suit that one particular customer. It drives me insane. I can't tell you how many times I have told people "Our hours on Friday are from 9-4" and then I get a phone call at 3:50 "I'm not going to make it, can you stay open late for me?" No. The answer is no and you should know better than to ask!

" I make sure to tell them all that any time between 10 & 12 is good for picking up (I don't want to be sitting in my cake space all day waiting)" ---------------------------------------------------
Here is your problem. Your instructions are too vague. You need to be more precise. Cookie pick up is between 10-12, and I close at noon. You said "is good". Doesn't mean any other time is good, or you're not there any other time. KWIM?

Is it an option to have a small tub outside and if someone is late they are place in there and have to pick up and you could take their payment over the phone if they haven't paid?

It was 2:00 - but instead of the $50 for their package, she handed me $60, and wouldn't take change. So I got a wee tip for my time...

One question, I'm just wondering how you worded it. Because some people could read "any time between 10 & 12 is good for picking up" as being a preference but not really a requirement. Maybe you need to say "Pick up between 10 & 12 ONLY". I'd love to see pics of your works of art!

You close at noon. Leave at noon and don't worry about it. The end. If she closes at noon, though, customer might punch a wall then try to get her fired. She wants her cookies and gravy she ordered. (I know Kellie is self-employed LOL)
