If you google Iranian government votes to execute protestors you come up with a whole bunch of foreign publications along with Newsweek using the number of 15,000 which is apparently the number of protestors arrested these past weeks. But apparently some of the protestors that were arrested have been released after paying a fine. There are however protestors still in jail awaiting trial. It’s these folks that could potentially face execution. And I have no idea what the number is.
One response to the tweet below thinks the head guy in Iran will step in at the last minute and stop any executions if it goes that far.
Or since this is Iran the government could be serious about executing some protestors as a “hard lesson learned” to try and stop future protests in that country. And the head guy won’t step in and stop them.
While it appears if there are executions it won’t be 15,000 it’s still horrifying that peaceful protestors could be executed.
So I changed the title and as more of this story unfolds I will update this thread as more reliable information comes out about the fate of the protestors after that vote.
As far as I can find this is true.
I’m not sure what to say because it is so horrifying to kill that many people for protesting and the world can only watch.
From the article..
”Iran Votes to Execute Protesters, Says Rebels Need 'Hard Lesson'
“Iranian lawmakers have, in recent days, called for strict punishments for the protesters who have been arrested. On Monday, CNN reported that a letter signed by 227 members of the Iranian parliament urged that the protesters be given harsh punishment that "would serve as a good lesson in the shortest possible time."
&
“On Tuesday, parliament did just that, voting to impose the death penalty on all protesters in custody as a "hard lesson" for all rebels. The majority in favor of the penalty was considerable, 227 out of the 290 total members, matching the number of lawmakers who signed the letter.”

More than 15,000 Iranians have been arrested and several hundred killed in nearly two months of protests, the activist news agency Hrana estimates. The demonstrations that began in response to the alleged police killing of Amini have cascaded into a broad movement against the country’s clerical leaders. Authorities have demanded harsh punishments for protesters, whom they call “rioters,” and have sought to blame the unrest on foreign powers.
Story continues below advertisement
Some of the detained are released with a fine. Others are tried in a criminal court. But political prisoners typically face the feared revolutionary courts, a parallel system created to protect the Islamic republic, said Hadi Enayat, a political sociologist specializing in Iranian law.
The revolutionary courts are notorious for “egregious violations of due process,” said Tara Sepehri Far of Human Rights Watch. The state “uses the trials as another element of shaping their narrative about the protests.”
In late October, Iran’s judiciary said it had indicted about 1,000 people in Tehran and would hold public trials in the coming weeks.

Yes I was aware of all the arrests and some deaths but not potentially 15000.

Why are you so surprised? This is what happens when you unilaterally shut down people's voices and enforce a dictatorial one-state/one-party government upon them.
And THIS is why I ABHOR our current state of reckless censorship. THIS is where it leads.

Twitter closing accounts or flagging posts is not remotely similar to the Iranian government crackdown on protests. The Biden White House & Congress are far from a dictatorship but the Republican Party is certainly heading towards an authoritarian government.

227 members Parliament signed a letter and urged the judiciary to "deal decisively" with the protestors. www.reuters.com/article/iran-women-idAFKBN2RW09AWe ask the judiciary to deal decisively with the perpetrators of these crimes and with all those who assisted in the crimes and provoked rioters,” 227 lawmakers from Iran’s 290-seat, hardline-led parliament said in a statement, according to state media.
The protestors might have to face the feared revolutionary courts, sham trials with fabricated evidence and could very well be sentenced to death. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/11/12/iran-protests-mahsa-amini-courts/There is debate within Iran’s security circles, said Ellie Geranmayeh, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, over whether “to shock and awe the streets to scare them away from protesting,” or prioritize “containing the threat without having to resort to the mass executions that we saw in the 1980s” during post-revolution purges. “I think the system is sort of stuck between what is the right approach,” she said.
This tension broke through on Nov. 5 when hard-line lawmakers, who dominate Iran’s parliament, issued a statement calling on the judiciary to “deal decisively” with the “instigators of recent riots” and punish “enemies of God” — a legal charge that can carry the death penalty.

Are you whining that neo-fascist authoritarian wannabes can't foment insurrection on social media? Or that there are social consequences for hateful speech? I'm sorry, where are you being "recklessly censored" that gives you ANY justification to compare your "persecution" to what is happening in Iran? Seriously, this is a disgusting and pathetic comparison.

From BBC News…. link” Iran protester: 'We could hear the beatings and screams in jail'”From the article… “I have been released from jail, but I feel like I am still shackled. I had heard stories about people being arrested and tortured, but it is different when you see such things first-hand. I feel that I am going to explode with rage, since I can't do anything for those still stuck in jail. I just want to get this testimony out there. There were girls as young as 15 among the people detained with us. Two young women suffered from chronic illnesses, but our jailers refused to give them medicine. One of them panicked and fainted when she was handed a heavy prison sentence. But the security officers did not care. We asked them to call an ambulance, but a female officer said she would "be alright soon enough". The same woman was tortured while being interrogated. They smashed her hands so severely that almost all her fingernails were broken. When another woman had a seizure, the guards just shrugged it off, saying that if she died it would mean "one piece of trash less on earth". She suffered from epilepsy, but the guards refused her access to medication. A fourth woman had cancer. But the security officers refused her access to medical care. She had letters from respected doctors saying that she needed to visit medical centres for routine procedures, but they refused her medical care. A 17-year-old girl said her main concern was that she would not be able to get good marks in her final school exams, because she could not study in prison. She told us that she hoped her mother had told her school principals that she was sick, so they would let her go back to school after getting released. A young man in his 20s, who was arrested at the same time as us, was beaten so badly by security forces. They hit him on his head with batons. He feared that he would die there and then. He gave us his name and his parents' address so that we would be able to tell them about his last moments. I don't know where they took him. They also brought young men into the cell next to ours and beat them. We could hear the sound of the beatings and their screams. We panicked when we heard those sounds.” Another terrifying thing about being arrested during the protests was that no clear procedures were followed. You did not know what might happen to you, hour to hour. Everything depended on the whims of the officer handling your case. And they constantly lied to you. You were kept in state of limbo. Many protesters also cannot afford the hefty bails that the judges are demanding, meaning that they are stuck in jail. Since my release, I have felt that my hands are tied. They have installed so many surveillance cameras across my city that I feel that anywhere I go they are constantly watching me. Many people have stopped taking their mobile phones to protests because that will expose them to additional risks if they get arrested. Some protesters used to take old "dumbphones" [basic handsets without the internet or apps] with them. But security forces have become wary of that and now accuse them of being "riot leaders". In some cases, they have released people from detention centres and later raided their homes and seized all their electronic devices. I hope that nobody else will be forced to suffer even a shred of what we saw and endured. I was beaten at the time of my arrest. But your own personal pain becomes irrelevant when you see the pain of others. I can say with confidence that almost no-one cried over their own injuries - it was only over the pain of others or out of fear for their families."

Like all those who hang out on the right side of the political spectrum she thinks she is getting a dig in at the left when all she is doing is perfectly describing what her buddies on the right are doing. It seems the right has a problem with the truth. They can’t handle it when presented with it and do their best to create a narrative of misinformation to counter it.

If not, the parallels drawn in the responses are so far off base, it’s not even worth the amount of time and energy to address them - it won’t get through. My guess is it’s either an exceptionally oblivious parrot of Fox talking points, or someone having fun with anyone calling out the farce that is the current “conservative” leadership.

Ian Bremmer tweeted it, and he is generally right.
In addition to being tragic, this has the potential to backfire spectacularly.

I’m glad you are calling out your party for being on the wrong side of humanity, likened to Iran.

And THIS is why I ABHOR our current state of reckless censorship. THIS is where it leads. Our current state of reckless censorship? No one is surprised at what the current Iranian regime is doing. Horrified yes, surprised no. No one is surprised. But let's have a moment of self reflection. I feel like censorship serves your interests perhaps when it refers to "Don't Say Gay" or banning books from schools and libraries, removing history of colonization, slavery or the civil rights movement from text books and planning lessons and voter suppression, even to the point of arresting folks who voted after they were told they were able to vote. Are you nodding your head in agreement with the Republicans who are now calling to raise the voting age to 21 since they're angry Gen Z turned up at the polls? Does it serve your best interests when Trump foments an insurrection? When rioters were chanting "Hang Mike Pence!" and Boebert was telling rioters the location of the house speaker? When a senate leader refuses to seat a supreme court justice several months before an election, but rushes through another while people have already begun voting and RGB is not yet cold in her grave? Because those actions are what I feel and history would reveal are the actions of dictatorial governments. I'm glad we an all agree though that what the Iranian government is doing is terrible though. Show's we're not all completely horrible people.

Apparently the story stating the Iranian Government voted to teach the protestors a hard lesson quickly by executing them is false according to a NBC News. That’s good.
Having said that when you hear a story like this from a country with Iran’s history you don’t automatically dismiss it as false.
From the NBC article…
“Marashi noted that there is precedent for mass execution in Iran, which he said could help fuel the claim of widespread death sentences for protesters.
“In 1988 thousands of political prisoners were executed by orders of Ayatollah Khomeini within the span of a few months,” he said. “The rumors of a new round of mass executions is likely fueled by memories of what happened in 1988.”
