I wonder what happened to make the car burst into flames like that. Im glad hie eyesight was not affected! In a garage, it could be just about anything. It could be an electrical issue with one of the cars, flammable liquids that were sitting around, old rags with gas on them can spontaneously start fire. Lots of ways for a fire to start and because of the chemicals used with restoring cars, once a fire starts it's hard to get it under control quickly unless you have a fire extinguisher literally right there. Edited to add: CNN is reporting that the fire started because of gasoline. www.cnn.com/2022/11/14/entertainment/jay-leno-hospitalized/index.html

When I was about 14 I worked as a volunteer at a hospital.. the emergency people brought someone who was burned badly through the front doors.. the smell was so bad.. I will never forget that.. it has to be the worst way to go. I can't even imagine.

I wonder what happened to make the car burst into flames like that. I have had a two trucks and combine start on fire. It is terrifying! Doubly terrifying when you are out in a corn field that can also burst into flames and spread. The trucks were electrical. Combine was a hot bearing, which is common. Luckily we were able to contain the fires before anything got out of hand, but my husband did sustain some very light burns from one of the machine fires in the corn field. We are ready to call dispatch immediately when we see any trace of fire and keep extinguishers in EVERYTHING during harvest. I'm so glad he wasn't burned worse. Once, when my husband was combining along, and his combine started on fire, he was able to quickly extinguish it, because he caught it fast and had extinguishers. But after spending time out there to make sure the stalks were not going to start on fire - he had to come home and take a nap. That adrenalin hit SO hard he could barely walk by the time he got in the house.

But after spending time out there to make sure the stalks were not going to start on fire - he had to come home and take a nap. That adrenalin hit SO hard he could barely walk by the time he got in the house. T That is terrifying! I had no idea that vehicles could just combust like that in an outdoor setting. I can understand how Jay Leno's fire could have started if there were oily rags or cleaning solvents around and possibly a vehicle running in the enclosed space. The fumes would be highly flammable and I know you are told to use certain products in a well ventilated area for just this reason. Why are we not hearing about vehicles bursting into flames all over the place? And people's homes burning up from the cars in the garage suddenly bursting into flames? I have heard of rags in buckets and fires happening when in an enclosed area, but not just an average truck without any signs of leaking fuel or being worked on recently. Were your trucks operating at the time or just sitting outside? Or were they in a garage? What was deemed the cause of the fires? And it sounds like his combine was being used when it caught. Was there anything unusual about the machine? A faulty fuel line? Recent spill of something flammable on the engine? Is this something that commonly happens in farming areas and I just have never heard of it? I would be like you and make sure every vehicle had an easily reachable fire extinguisher within inches of the driver's seat along with several placed throughout the barn and garage and even the home. I truly had no idea this was such a common issue. There were two fire extinguishers left for me in this new home, one in the kitchen mounted inside a cupboard and one in the large garage area. I haven't looked at them to see if they are fully charged yet, but will certainly do so today! I also have one packed with my stuff in one of the pods that had been in my garage. I know that one must need charging up because it had been years since it was purchased and it was never used. Where does one take a fire extinguisher to be updated? I'm assuming that is something that can be done and I don't have to just buy new ones. I am relieved to hear your fires were not more damaging. Your poor husband must have been so freaked out! **I just read your post again and see that both trucks were electrical, not gasoline! I would have thought an electric vehicle would have less of a chance to burst into flames. Or is it a wiring issue with them?

I would have thought an electric vehicle would have less of a chance to burst into flames. Or is it a wiring issue with them? With farm trucks - they often don't get driven for most of the year. So they are in storage, and mice are always an issue. Always. No matter how hard we try, the mice still get in and chew wires.

I just read a small blurb the Jay Leno has received skin grafts.. seems he may have worse burns then originally thought .. *** It also says it was a leak. US talk show host Jay Leno required skin grafts for significant burns to his face and hands from an explosion involving a vintage car, and will undergo further surgery this week, his doctor said Wednesday. *** The former anchor of "The Tonight Show" remains in a specialized Los Angeles hospital after suffering second-degree and possible third-degree burns in an accident while working on a vehicle at his private garage Sunday. "I do anticipate him making a full recovery," said Dr Peter Grossman, who described 72-year-old Leno's condition as "good." *** But burn injuries are progressive and dynamic and it's hard to predict ultimately what the final outcome will be at this stage of the game." *** Leno has also been undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which stimulates oxygen circulation in the blood stream to speed up the healing process. www.rawstory.com/jay-leno-needed-skin-grafts-after-car-fire-doctor/
