I was there to support a friend in a divorce “trial”? And after she told us to be seated after the standing for the judge maneuver, she told me to “sit up straight” when I put my arm in the back of the bench
Then. She asked if I was chewing gum
I said no And she said “I thought you were”
When she looked away, I swallowed my gum 😄
I felt like a little kid
Ever since, I’ve had a little zing of anxiety regarding chewing gum
Have you been chided by a judge?

No, but I got called out by a Priest. We were at a small family memorial service. We were in the front row, and the priest was on a platform, so you had to look to see him. I had just started wearing contacts. They were hard lenses and if I looked up, they would pop out because my eyelid muscles weren’t used to them yet. So, I was looking down at my lap. He told me, a couple of times, to look up at him. Eventually, I just tilted my head backwards so I could “see” him without moving my eyes upward. I was ticked off. 😆

I have. I’ve even had one particular judge throw things. I’m an attorney though and spend many many hours on court.

They think they are god. At my job I was involved with judges but mostly mediators. Private mediators were fine but the state ones would treat us like babies/threaten us, etc for really stupid, teensy little things. Don't get me started... Glad I'm retired.

Have you been chided by a judge? I totally can picture that. Not me, but I was in court to argue a traffic ticket I had received. The judge was exactly has you described with practically everyone. One person sneezed and she told the person they should have left the room to sneeze (what?). Another person was told they should be put in jail for 3 days because they didn't dress properly for court (he was wearing nice jeans, tennis shoes and a plain t-shirt - in a very rural GA county). She didn't but said some other a couple of more comments about his clothing, even though others were dressed worse). Another person was there because she got a ticket for having her dog off its leash (but was in her own yard). The fine was $300 and the girl said she didn't have it so the judge put her in jail for 3 days. She told the girl that she was a disgrace to dog owners. When the judge was asking one person questions, the person kept saying "Um..." probably because she was nervous. The judge said "If you say "um" one more time, your fine is going to be doubled. Geez! She was horrible.

A little. I was dealing with a speeding ticket and the judge told me to stop putting the neighborhood in danger by racing around. I have to admit, he had a Judge Judy quality with a little twinkle in his eye when he said it - asked me why I was in such a rush; I said I was going to visit my daughter at a college parent's weekend and couldn't wait to see her and he asked what college etc... He was very nice but definitely felt the need to put me in my place a bit.

I don't know why people feel the need to scold. They could say things nicely, couldn't they? My friend, when she was at the Uof Miami law school, told me that the judges made many, many sexual comments to her. She's 6'1 and rather voluptuous. They told her that she needed to wear short skirts all the time. No pants in their courtroom

When she looked away, I swallowed my gum 😄 OMG, this made LOL for real! My biggest fear is my phone ringing, buzzing or pinging in court. I turn it off completely. I'm usually in a very busy dependency court where the attorneys and SWs are texting each other continuously and live in fear one of their phones will make too much noise as well.

Yes. It was a virtual hearing for work that was scheduled during my long planned and paid for vacation. We were notified of the hearing date maybe 10 days in advance and the judge wouldn’t allow us to reschedule. So I had to participate from my hotel room. My husband was sleeping but his phone rang (which admittedly is ungodly loud) and the judge made a comment. 🙄

Then. She asked if I was chewing gum I said no And she said “I thought you were” When she looked away, I swallowed my gum 😄 This made me laugh so hard! One time I was called up for jury duty. The time came for everyone who wanted to be excused to stand up before the judge to give their reason why they needed to be excused. Person after person got up to give their reason, and person after person was angrily shut down by the judge. When it was my turn, I was so scared! I explained to him that I wasn't actually asking to be excused, I just wanted to know roughly how long the trial would go for, because I had booked and paid for an overseas trip in four weeks. Luckily he didn't scold me, he just said "Well rather than have you sit there worried about your trip for the whole time, you're excused!"

I just asked Dh if he's ever seen that in court. He said no, and couldn't believe any judge would call you out on those things as they have never been a thing in any court he's been in.

LOL at swallowing the gum sharlag 🤣 When I was 18, I received a traffic violation and went to court hoping to have the fine and/or points reduced - the police officer even suggested that when I got the ticket. When it was my turn I didn't contest the ticket, but explained why I did what I did. He said, "Ignorance is no excuse for the law." That was it - no reduction for me!

Is there a law about chewing gum in court? That seems like a weird thing to ask about.
I was on a potential jury and the judge stopped everything and asked if I wanted to be there because my body language said no. It was July and I just said that I was cold. I was. And I didn't want to be there.

When I turned 18, still in HS. I went for my citizen interview. I giggled when the judge asked me if I was affiliated with a communist party or any terrorist organization and he sternly told me it was a serious question. This was back in ‘79 and I probably couldn’t even name any terrorist organizations!

I was always taught that it is the height of rudeness to chew gum in a formal setting like a courtroom, theatre, etc.

I did but it was only heard by the attorneys and clerk. I was up for a jury service and we'd gone through all the people asking to be excused and the judge made it very clear that if it didn't fall within his 3 parameters for release then don't bother raising your hand. Mine didn't so I sat still. I was about to be selected when they said the trial would likely go for at least a month. I have an internal pain pump and my refill (which cannot be missed under any circumstances) was in 2 weeks. I asked to speak to the judge privately and when I told him he got very angry and told me I was wasting everyone's time. I started to cry and said that my issue didn't meet his requirements for release and that's why I didn't say anything. One of the attorney's snickered and the judge got a little red. I was excused and as I was leaving I heard him ask everyone else if they had any medical appointments that could not be missed or re-scheduled. I hate that I always cry when challenged by someone in authority, I blame my dad.

The Judge told her to bring her crakers and eat away and anytime she needed to use the restroom to motion to him and he would recess.
Crazy.

Yes, but I’m a lawyer, so it comes with the job.
Some judges are just assholes on a power trip. Most recognize that they’re elected officials (in state court anyway) and try to be respectful to everyone in their courtrooms.
I’m in arbitration at least as much as I’m in court and prefer it by far. Arbitrators are chosen and paid for by the parties to the dispute and generally more courteous and respectful to everyone involved. If not, they won’t get many arbitration gigs.

I have a niece that has had 3 strokes. She's does very well, but does have a slight slur and sometimes needs someone to repeat what they said if they talk fast. She also needs time to process things such as financials. She was divorced and her ex was constantly appealing his child support and spousal mainteance. She takes a lot of meds, and one causes dry mouth so she chews just one small piece of gum to keep the saliva going. I would go to court dates with her for support and to help explain things to her if she got confused. I did this numerous times. Then there was the judge we saw for her filing contempt for ex not paying and owning her $32k in back support. The judge asked her if she had gum and she said yes and was trying to explain to him why she had it and he told her she better spit it out and to never come back to his court with gum in her mouth ever again. Okay then. lol Then I helped her with some numbers and dates and he asked me who I was and what I was doing and he told me to shut my mouth and if I said another word he would put me in jail for contempt. Shocked the heck out of me as I had helped her 20 times or so in other courts. Well, to his surprise, we applied for an ADA advocate and they sent him papers telling him she was allowed to have me there in court to assistt her any any way needed in all her follow up court dates.

Never chided but got into a heated argument with a judge once. Trying to get bail set on a domestic violence defendant. The judge was refusing to issue an order of protection or set bail. I called out some stats related to repeat offenders who get released and target the victims immediately. The judge looked at me and said I was wrong. I said on the record "Really? You should Google it. If you want to now I'll wait". Everyone in the now silent courtroom stopped to look at me.
He set bail.

I've only been in one twice for jury selection, and I guess it never came up. I was dismissed early on both times.

That would be miserable for someone with morning sickness. I guess judges hear all of the excuses and know if they start making exceptions, they won't have many left for jury duty.
