The Spellbinders glimmer hot foil system is on sale for $99 ($149 regular) and I’ve been going back and forth with how much I’ll use it. I already have a couple dies for it (I’ve used them to do embossing) but I really like how foiling looks on projects. If you have one, do you use it regularly, meaning at least once a month? Do you like it and is $99 a good price for it?

No advice. I am on the fence with you, just wondering if I should take the leap.
I am getting very close to the edge however … lol.

Personally I am refusing to get into hot foiling with the plates. I don't need another pricey area of crafting to get into. I do like the projects, but in the end I think I will eventually regret purchasing. Same as the gel plate stamping. Not getting into that either. I do have a mini mink, but I got that for $30 and foils at TM. If I am limited with that then so be it. At least I don' need pricey plates.

I'm in the "Go Get It" corner. I love mine. I don't use it all the time but enough that I'm happy I have it. I have the Spellbinders glimmer die subscription, which has built up my foil die and foil collection. Hobby Lobby also has foil dies on sale a lot.

Do you have a Mini? Do you USE it? Do you have a Foil Quill "system" for your personal cutter (Silhouette)? Do you USE it? Do you have both .... and not use either? There .... you have my decision.

I'm having a hard time taking that leap also. Is it worth it if you don't make cards? Would there be much use for it if you only scrapbook?

Have you seen Amy Gretchens videos? She uses the plates with ink I think which is why I got a couple rather than the whole system. youtu.be/bGM0ElM8E4I

Just be sure it will fit into your current due cut machine. Ask me how I know😩
I found it’s fun to use occasionally but not for anything mass produced, like Christmas cards. I have older Spellbinders dies that I have used, the intricate ones, and they are quite pretty foiled, as well as the newer ones.
Bottom line, it’s fun for occasional use but not the first thing I reach for.

That's where I am...was going to ask for it for Christmas but have talked myself out of it. I'd need to purchase a die cutting machine too because I have the gemini jr and it's not compatible. I know I will not get $300 worth of projects out of it! Now the gel plate I am asking for - it's only a $30 investment!!!

I just deleted a post about the FoilPress system for the Gemini Jr., which I have, since it’s been discontinued, so replacement plates or other pieces might be hard to get. I just bought an extra plate for $20 but if something goes wrong with the base, people could be out of luck. It works fine and uses Spellbinders’ foil plates and foil and some are still out there.

What does a gel plate do?? Oh, it's just a messy mixed media thing. A smooth piece of "gel" (washable/reusable) onto which you can spread paints, inks, or pretty much anything (except alcohol inks I imagine), then add textures, then press a piece of paper onto it to create a layered looking print. Very low tech! But a process/messy - and I imagine I won't use it that often. But I can live with that for the cost. Vicki Boutin loves them, as an example

I never messed too much with mixed media, but I remember watching a youtuber who did a lot of messy backgrounds. It looked like it was fun to play with! I haven't scrapped for a while and I feel like there are so many new (well new to me ) popular things out there!

I'm having a hard time taking that leap also. Is it worth it if you don't make cards? Would there be much use for it if you only scrapbook? The size you can foil on is limited by the size of the platform. So if you see yourself foiling title cards or PL cards to use on your scrapbook page (even fussy cut to use as embellishments) then go for it. If you don't see yourself doing that, then you probably don't need it. Also, if you are happy using just a few signature images over and over, it wouldn't be so costly. So a cardmaker can invest in a set of plates and turn out a hundred cards. Or for a themed scrapbook, you could use the same image on each page to show continuity. But if you want variety, each new plate is more money.
I have had mine since early in the year (purchased with my Christmas $$$). I like the items I have foiled for cards, but honestly I don't use it that much.
It does make beautiful foiled images, almost a debossed finish. If I used it more, I would probably be more proficient with it. As it is, I forget between sessions exactly what steps to take. I would love to be able to use the negative foil like Jennifer McGuire does, but I have yet to figure out how to make that work well.
Of the foiling systems I have tried, the finish is the nicest. But it doesn't lend itself to stenciling like the Minc does.

It's on my list of 'no thank you, not for me' techniques. It does look beautiful on cards but I can't stomach the cost of foil plates and I don't need another system of things to store.
I also discovered through using foil with adhesives and toner printed cards that I really don't enjoy handling foil. The plastic-ness isn't appealing to me and I hate throwing away the waste/negatives but I also don't like the feel of using it on cards. I gather that you can use a solid plate to make use of the negative waste pieces with the hot foil system so maybe that would reduce that issue (assuming other people also hate throwing away plastic waste). Cutting foil pieces also annoyed me, it's awkward to handle. And to store.
I remember we Peas talked about the hot foil systems when it first came out and some people were worried that they would burn themselves. Not sure if you gave clumsy hands or accident prone people in your house but that might be a consideration.

Get the gel plate, so fun! Much lots of cool stencils and skip the foil. Get a laminator and foil that way.
Or look on Facebook marketplace for a used one.

How much would you use it? Do you love the look enough to go through the process? It’s kind of fiddly. I’d mostly choose heat embossing, do it in 1/4 of the time and like the slightly dimensional look more. (To be fair, I’m clumsy with foil, while I was taught heat embossing the first time I picked up a stamp.) There’s also the expense of plates.
My system was heavily discounted and scrapbook.com let me apply another discount too or I wouldn’t have bought it. (It’s the Gemini version, almost identical, but the few plates I have are Spellbinders.)
Even for cardmakers I follow, sometimes the look doesn’t grab me as much as cards where their “hand” shows more. Though I’ve loved how Jenn Shurkus used it on some abstract Distress ink cards and some by Yana with just a hint of foil.

I really like the foiling results and would love to get the Glimmer but I do not have the room for it to stay out all the time. It would be a hassle to have to pack and unpack it every time I wanted to foil. And buying dies can get very expensive. Also, the only foil that works is the spellbinders foil, right? I really wish there were more "pre foiled" things available. Pink Fresh and Taylored Expressions have some but I wish this would catch on. Years ago, I bought all the stuff to do foiling in a laminator. Since I have a laserjet printer, it seemed the inexpensive route. I've never foiled on a card! Maybe that should be my New Years resolution.

Not really - there are other companies that have the hot foil that works with the system. There's a facebook store called Bluebonnet Foil RGV that has some gorgeous foils at a much better price point than the Spellbinders (you need to order her hot foils, not her toner foils). I believe that the foils that work with the Cricut Quill also work. The deco foil and Minc foil dont, though. There's also an Australian company called Crafty Critta that has some really pretty ones; again make sure you're ordering the Hot Foil and not the Toner Foil. And the shipping can be a bit shocking I will say, though, that I have the Glimmer and a metric ton of foils, and quite a few foil plates and it's not the first thing I go to when making a card. It's pretty magical to peel off the foil and there's a real "wow" factor to seeing the results, and there are some beautiful plates out there, but you don't need it.

I had no idea there were other companies that made hot foil. That's good to know. Also, there are ways to get foil highlights without investing in the machine. Thermoweb has some adhesive transfers that are kind of like double-sided adhesive in some pretty nice designs; you can make designs with glue that dries tacky (I've tried it with Mono Multi and that worked quite well). You can also draw designs with Sakura glaze pens and foil over those with toner foil & a laminator. None of these give you the debossed texture, but they do work without investing in pricey plates and an even pricier machine. Even with the machine, it's not an exact science. Depending on the foil plate and the paper you're using, you might need extra cardstock shims. I have the solid plate that lets you use the waste foil (and if you get the machine, I would definitely invest in that plate) and to get that to work as well as it should, you need to let it heat up longer than the timer on the machine says. And now Spellbinders has a bunch of smaller shaped solid plates that let you use the waste foil directly on a card and it looks really cool. If you really want to go down a foiling rabbit hole, check out Nancy Stamps / Foiling Snobs Club on youtube. But I would stay away from there unless you're already pretty sure you want the machine. Because she makes it look like just about the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Check out this youtube video showing what you can do with foil plates while not using foil. I think I may put this on my wish list... This video was pretty amazing. I do have the foil system but it’s fun to think of other ways to use a hot foil plate. As far as the original question from OP I got the Glimmer when it was on sale. I like it and I love the look of foiled cards. I don’t have a ton of room in my craft space but it fits perfectly on a Raskog shelf. I would highly recommend it if you find a good price and you think you would enjoy making use of it.
