I guess it’s appropriate that this is the 2022 Word of the year. Too many folks in this country are intellectually lazy with no curiosity. IMO I believe a lot of these conspiracy theories would be a non issue if enough folks asked one simple question and be persistent enough to get an answer. The question? Where is your verifiable proof of what you claim. But we have cable news stations that let folks come and spout all this nonsense and very few interviewers push back and ask the question. And when they do, in most cases, the person making these claims avoid answering it directly, starts off on another subject and the interviewer does nothing to get an answer to the question but moves on. Then you have blogs and newsletter again spouting off theories and trying push them as the truth of what is happening. But offering no verifiable proof. And then there is the gang who believe if you read on the internet then it must be true. And none of these folks taken in by all the nonsense ask or even care about any verifiable proof. Some because they lack curiosity and some because they want to believe what they are reading or hearing. And right now the group excelling in gaslighting the American People are members of the Republican Party. What I think the Democrats should do is bring back a version of the old Wendy’s commercial where old ladies are staring at a hamburger bun with a small hamburger patty and this one little old lady looks at that tiny piece of meat and says “Where’s the beef”? But instead of hamburgers have one if the ridiculous claims made by the Republicans like the one below and demand where’s the verifiable proof”. I’m sure an advertising guy can make a slick funny version of an ad that get’s people asking where IS the proof. But then they would just say "Google it". I have asked many people for their sources and I get that I can do the research myself. They did not like when I shared my research because it did not match theirs. Of course then my sources were all fake media, but their sources are legit.

The thing that bothers me the most about these types of posts is that people like the OP spread their bullshit and when shown what gullible fools they are they never acknowledge it. They just slink off and only post on the threads about what they had for dinner or what their favorite color is, until their stupid post is off of the front page. I just have zero respect for that type of personality.
Everyone at one time or another has thought that something on the Internet was fact when in actuality it was fiction. But most intelligent, secure posters will acknowledge that they were wrong as soon as they realize it.
Not fools like the OP. They will go to their grave clinging to their falsehoods. That just insures that no one will ever respect or take them seriously.

Don’t blame the education system. We’ve never taught anyone to believe what a god or guru tells them without recourse to reason or verifiable evidence.
You can lay that particular teaching at the feet of religion, and draw a very clear correlation between strong fundamentalist religious belief and susceptibility to conspiracy nonsense.
Don’t want your kids open to indoctrination? Keep them away from fundamentalist religious organizations. That kind of hard-wiring takes decades to undo, if it is escaped at all.
The OP used to be a normal pea from east Texas. It would be interesting indeed to find out exactly what happened to lead her into conspiracy belief.

Religion is a cancer on the human race.
Also, I couldn't care less why the OP is such a fool.

She stopped being fully normal around when Harvey and Maria hit . I found her to be getting very hostile with where people chose to donate, particularly to Puerto Rico.. Maybe that was a precursor. Merge

MergeI was just going to say the same thing. I noticed a shirt in her posts when there was a hurricane or some other natural disaster in her area, I believe?

Of course then my sources were all fake media, but their sources are legit. IMO the best response to “google it” would be you are claiming such and such so what is your verifiable proof of what you claim because without providing it then your words are meaningless or you’re lying. To me the key word is verifiable because that would mean I’m going to check your proof to see if it’s accurate or not. So it’s kind of like saying “put up or shut up”. Doing something like this has more meaning if it’s done to politicians and other officials in public. IMO. If you notice we have a combination of politicians insulating themselves from being in positions where they would have to back up what they are claiming with facts and a bunch of media types and journalists who for whatever reason refuse to ask the hard questions and keep at it until they get actual answers instead of a bunch of meaningless words.

My seemingly very healthy chicken died suddenly a few weeks ago. Zero symptoms in the evening. Found her dead on the coop floor in the morning. RIP Nugget. I don’t think it was vaccine related though. 🤷♀️ Did you ask a funeral director though? (I hope that came across as humorous as I intended. I am sorry your chicken died—that part isn’t funny at all.)

I don't blame educators, not one bit.
I do blame the systemic gutting of the education system, the imposition of policies that do not work (and their lack of results are backed by scientific study), plus chronic under-funding / under-staffing.
And yes, most religions 'prime the pump' when it comes to susceptibility to misinformation manipulation. Do as you're told. Don't question. The invisible, omnipotent, unknowable power is never to be doubted, of course this book is a perfect copy of something thousands of years old, despite being mistranslated and altered to fit various repressive ruler's wishes. Here are the easy answers to all quandaries. Anything for the false comfort of not having to realize the Universe doesn't give a flying fork about you.

The school choice/vouchers movement is a lot of the problem. Frankly, we wouldn't be in such a mess if public school was mandatory.

I think susceptibility to believing conspiracy theories or not using critical thinking skills has more to do with outside influences like friends, family, TV programming, exposure to others who also believe in those conspiracy theories, and so on than it does the education system. Education level may play more of a role than the system as a whole. My mom has six kids in her family. They all attended the same school and grew up in the same family. However, they have different education levels and life experiences. All but one have lived in the same state their whole life. Two of them are big time Trumpers and believe all of the conspiracy theories. When Trump started his 2016 campaign and there was a large amount of untrue information being shared on Facebook, they would laugh and eye roll when others respectfully fact checked their posts. They have now blocked anyone who tried to point out that what they were posting was false. One doesn't talk about politics anymore but is likely Republican, or at least was. The others are Democrat and don't believe the conspiracy theories. The extreme ones all started listening to Rush Limbaugh and watching Fox News years ago.

Transmits very quickly.

Of course the majority of comments were people calling it fake news hysteria.

A lot of the "patriots" in my area send their kids to public school. And they themselves went to public school. It truly is social media and news pushing fake stories and persons in top positions making things seem so dire that they latch on to "save the kids" as they are being brain washed. Those people know what they are doing and forced public ed won't stop them.

There should be more rigorous pre-teaching coursework around media and information literacy, and additional professional development for teachers already in jobs. Too many folks my age and even younger don't know how to teach research and media literacy, and schools keep cutting the librarians trained in this work.
