When you are telling a story (here or anywhere), and you change the participants names to protect them, how do you pick a name to call them? Is it something similar to their real name? Is it one of your favorite names? Is it something you just pulled out of the air?
I’m always curious when names are changed, how the story teller arrives at said names. 😁

I like a good, funny name. Rasputin, for example.

I actually don’t use names. Person A did something to person B, etc.

I like funny names too. I will add I really dislike when people use “person a and person b” makes it so much harder for me to follow along. I realize it shouldn’t, but it does. I don’t know what is the matter with my brain.

I think it’s very common to find it more difficult to keep track of Person A, Person B (or even just A and B) so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your brain. We’re just so used to people having names that anything other than names can make it hard to process. Personally I like common names - I find funny or weird names to be just as distracting as letters and I often won’t bother trying to keep track of things.

I pick names like John, Bob, Jane, Susie. If it needed a ladt name in the example or story I'd say John Doe or Jane Brown, Bob White, Susie Green. I only do it here. IRL, I'd either say the person's name or say my friend.
I also find it harder to follow along with person A & B.

I use Jane Doe or John Doe, because that's what I learned as a kid,. >> It was? is? what an anonymous person is called before they are identified.

I usually pick common names that I pull out of the air.
When I’m reading something from someone who uses “person a” and “person b” or uses initials, in my head I create names for them to help me follow the story.
For example, person a becomes Amy in my head and person b becomes Beth. Or with initials, M becomes Michael and T becomes Terry or something like that.

how do you pick a name to call them? Is it something similar to their real name? I find Person A, Person B or just initials hard to follow. For me to keep the story straight, it has to be simple. If my story is about John, Anne and Steve I'll keep their first initial and give them a new name. John, Anne and Steve might become Jack, Andrea and Sam.

I use a name similar to the real one, or at least with the same first letter. I also use a short name, it seems to be easier for people to follow.

The last time I wrote about people I used terms like "my cousin" and "sister" and "aunt" and afterwards I thought how muddled it looked. I need to remember to add fake names in to make things easier to understand.

I don’t know what is the matter with my brain. Because the majority of the fake name is Person. Like if you called them Lily A and Lily B, I’d mix up the Lilies. Your brain is good.
