My DD is singing a version of this song in their middle school choir and one of the students asked the choir director (a substitute) what the song meant. Sub replied, it's about two rivers falling in love (this is according to DD). Yikes. I laughed as I never interpreted this song as such. I didn't know two rivers could fall in love, but what do I know. LOL

lol That poor music teacher. But, people do interpret things totally different from each other often.
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the lyrics have changed throughout the years. It is more likely related to military when those are seperated from family, loves, etc.

Song from fur trappers on the Missouri. Some lines refer to the singer being in love with Chief Shenandoah’s daughter. Ended up becoming popular shanty for seamen around the world. Lyrics added as it spread to other areas.
