If it's not next to the user, it is returned to its "home" which is a remote control holder that houses several different remotes. I worked hard (LOL) to train my family to never leave the living room or family room without returning all remotes back where they belong. While in use, we never really have a problem finding them since we all have a tendency to leave them either on the arm of the chair/recliner or the end table next to it.

DH loves to be in control of the remote so it is by his recliner. His recliner has a pocket for remotes and when not in use, it is in the pocket.

I've been known to paint them a bright color, with craft paint, so that I can spot them. Haven't done that for a while though because now days they are always in the same place, on the table where we sit. In the bedroom they are next to my bed.
Back in the dark ages when we had those big boxy TVs with the simulated wood grain, 🤮 I always painted the simulated wood grain part to match my decor before I ever plugged them in. I really, really hated simulated wood grain. I stopped painting them when they started making the all black TVs.

The TV remote and cable remote are either on my husband's foot stool (90% of the time as he's the "tv person") or on the table next to my chair. I can't recall them ever being lost.
We choose to not have a TV in our bedroom.
My 2-1/2 y/o grandson loves to abscond with the Roku remote at their house. It stays on the mantle... until someone forgets, and he takes it off somewhere we cannot find it. The parents deal with it okay because they can control the TV from their phones as well. But when I'm there alone with the babies, I'm stuck! So. they finally ordered two extra ones to leave on the mantle, so I don't get stuck anymore when I'm there.

I sit at the kitchen table to watch TV and the remote is on the table ... yes, I'm weird ... I have a brand new fancy sofa that I have never sat on. that does not sound comfortable at all!!! although - maybe if I did that I would focus on the tv more & not have to keep rewinding LOL That's why I rarely watch tv live, usually dvr it first I DVR almost everything too ... I am so used to sitting on hard kitchen chairs ... I fall asleep if I'm on a sofa ... my ex used to get so mad at me! I recently bought new kitchen chairs ... that won't be delivered until freaking APRIL!!! . We'll see how comfortable I find them!

We literally have one.... In the living room. Without it, someone would have to actually push the button on the tv to shut it off. No one does that. They push the button on the remote and put it on the ottoman, somewhere.
The one in the bedroom (that in 5 years has never been turned on....) That remote is either on my guys bed side table, or as a prop in the window.

I have a wooden tray on the coffee table that holds the TV and fireplace remotes, some coasters, and a couple little puzzles. Since the kids moved out, they never get lost.
Our late dog chewed up at least three of them, and my son used to hide it in the closet when he was a toddler - he liked the little red light.

So ... I very, very rarely watch TV alone because I don't want to even touch the remote controls! (And there's a bunch! LOL) DH gets cranky when they are not where they are "supposed" to be. So, if I don't touch them, I can honestly say, "I dunno" when asked who moved them or stole them. Hahaaaa!
I'm usually at the computer and just stream whatever from there. :-)
I have heard of people taping rulers to them!

There's only two of us in house and they seem to stay put after we set them down. They generally sit in the same place for each remote, so it works for us.
