I remember shopping in the 5&10 for my mom and dad. I bought Old Spice for dad and Muguet des Bois spray powder for my mom. I was so excited and couldn't wait for Christmas to give it to them.
Every Sunday before church my dad would douse his handkerchief with the Old Spice, and I'd always ask to borrow it in church so I could sniff the scent.

We didn't have a lot of money so I'd use my little $5 (if that) and buy cute erasers for my brothers and sisters, and then wrap them in the little squares of wrapping paper from the fundraiser forms.

I don’t remember the first gifts I bought, but I do remember one Christmas when I was pretty young, maybe 8ish, and my older brother had gotten some small gifts for my little brother and me from Woolworth’s that he had wrapped by himself and put under the tree. My parents were suspicious and asked him where he got the money to buy them, and the truth came out that he had shoplifted the stuff! 😳😬 Thankfully it was before Christmas and we hadn’t opened them yet. My parents dragged him back to the store that same day to bring them back and to apologize to the manager. I don’t even know what the gifts were that he stole.

Five and dime store. Daddy took me and my brother. We bought Evening in Paris cologne in the blue bottle for my mother.

I remember the gifts I bought my 2 younger brothers on my own. I walked “down street” to the pharmacy that had a small selection of items. I bought my youngest brother a set of jointed animals (more cute than realistic, I can still picture the Zebra) and the other brother got a wallet that had blanket stitch lacing on the edges. I’m sure I also bought my parents something but can’t remember what.

Every christmas since I started kindergarten my grandmother would spend a day with us each individually to go out for lunch & christmas shopping, and then back to her house to wrap. My grandfather is the one who taught me how to wrap gifts! Of course the money came from my parents but I had to learn to budget to get gifts for my mom & dad & brother - usually all for $20 LOL I think this went on until I was in high school
Then when my kids were small my mom continued the tradition with my kids. And I will do it with my grandchildren whenever that happens.

I remember buying Polo cologne (green bottle) for mt boyfriend in high school. It smells so good and has always been my favorite. My daughters and I much prefer men's cologne over perfume as perfume is too strong for us.

My mother would drop me and my 2 sisters at the mall and give us 5 20.00 bills. With 5 of us in the family, we would buy each person a gift worth 20 dollars.

My sister, brother and I had bought Dad a pair of socks, and we’re in the bedroom wrapping them. We were probably 9,7 and 5 years old. The gift was from all of us, and my sister who was the oldest wrapped them in tissue paper(colored, I think), but no box. The paper was too long, and she took the scissors and cut off one end. And she cut off the heels of the socks☹️! She was devastated. My brother (always the diplomat), looked at them, and said to just wrap them up that Momma could fix them😂. And so, Daddy got socks with no heels.

Seems like the Dime Store was the place to shop! I remember buying a plastic, flocked rabbit "figurine" there for my mom. She had it for years.

I can remember buying a stuffed animal for my sister and Lego for my brother. I guess I would have been about 10yo. 45's at Woolworths for $1.45. those who know, know. In 1979 at the end of Grade 6 (our school year finishes in December here) a friend bought me and my best friend 45s for Christmas. I got My Sharona by The Knack and my BFF got I Was Made For Loving You by Kiss.

I made a lot of gifts. The first ones I really remember were from when I was maybe 10 or so, making a little counted cross stitch jar for my grandma and buying pretty soap to put inside, and then saving all the money I could to buy a pen for my grandfather. It was like $10, so one that would be probably $20-30 today, if I had to guess - probably worked like crap but it was fancy, lol.

My parents made sure that each of us 5 girls would buy a gift for everyone in the family. When we were young it was usually something like a comb, or a Lifesaver Book, or some shampoo. I remember I bought my dad some Reese's peanut butter cups, the regular 2 pack. I can still see his face when he opened it and he acted so happy! It seems silly now, I just gave him a candy bar, but that moment is burned in my brain. He passed away in 1983 at only 49 so I'm glad I still have that memory to look back on.
Oh great, who knew this thread would make me cry!

I don't remember what I bought. I remember shopping at Woolworths, using my babysitting money to pay. Edited to add, thinking about it more. I think I rode my bike to the mall(in the cold and probably snowplowed streets) probably wearing my one good dress, tights(only worn when dressing up) and good shoes. Because going shopping at the mall by yourself at that age(12-13) in the 1970's was a very grown up and important thing to do. Being on one's very best behavior and dressed up, with my babysitting money in a sandwich baggie safely pinned inside my coat pocket, with my purse in my bike basket.

My Oma taught me to do needlework when I was 4 years old. I remember frogging stitches (ripping out stitches) & re-doing them to the satisfaction of my Oma. I then put the needlework in a small plastic frame.
My mom kept it all these years and now I have it back. 58 years ago! The back of the project looks as perfect as the front.

My sister and I would also get dropped off at the mall with $100 each. I’d normally get my mom Stephen King’s latest and my dad a book about an interest of his. I remember Calvin & Hobbs specifically.

I love this thread! What fun memories we have of doing something special for those we love.
The first gifts I remember purchasing was in 2nd grade, Dec 1971. My Godmother had given me money for my birthday, and I saved it and bought a Lifesaver book for my 2 older sisters and my little brother. My little sister was only a year old, so I didn't get one for her. My two older sisters and I pooled our money and bought her 2 goldfish, which she ate about 2 weeks later! 😲 That is definitely something she has never lived down. 😆

I don't remember what I bought but I remember making gifts. I learned to crochet when I was 11 and all during junior high, I would make things for people. I made these crochet clowns for my friends. My aunt had my youngest cousin and I crochet her baby blanket. It was yellow, green and white granny squares.

I only remember the first gift I got my parents as an adult. It was my first year with a job and the shop had a little wooden clock I wanted to get them. I saved a few dollars here and there and I was so glad when I was able to buy it before it sold to a customer. It was $35 even with my employee discount and that was a lot for little ol minimum wage me.

My mom and step-dad used to do a charity bike ride every year, Portland to Eugene (110 miles!)
Dad took me to the mall and I picked out silver bicycle earrings with a matching necklace.
Then we disguised it in a HUGE box, with a forty lb weight in the bottom! 😅

I don’t remember what I bought or where I shopped but at the beginning of every year my mom would take us to the bank and we started a Christmas Club savings account. We deposited a little each week, I almost feel like there were coupons to attach the deposit to. I’m not sure if the final amount but I think it was $50 or $75? With that I made a list with my family, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles and cousins! Some presents I spent $1 and others,we’re up to $5.
