Linda - your DD sure keeps busy! I'm curious: what is "Christmas sewing?" Christmas baking is different this year - We've had a couple of options in the house at all times but usually we have a huge assortment by now because I would mail my Mom a care package. This year that pressure was off. I'm still planning on making our favourites (which is honestly at least 8 more kinds of cookies!) but My Mom's bestie sent me a very unexpected present last week - so kind of her. The quilting on these is simply gorgeous. The colours and the way the patterns in each tree vary make my scrapbooking heart sing songs. Honestly, I wish it were a small tablecloth or runner rather than placemats - only because I want to display these all season long, and placemats only come out for special meals! Plus...I really don't want to get gravy on them Placemats quilted by kirstendrew, on Flickr I'm not getting ahead as much as I hoped on my days off - do we ever? but I am making progress and any step forward is a step forward!!! What are the measurements of the placemats? It would be fairly easy to turn them into a table runner - -

Thanks for the recipes, Linda ! Maybe next week I will attempt the gingerbread pumpkin loaves. Still have two pumpkins in the basement and I am planning to get them cut up and cooked and turned into something. Don't need many pies with only five of us, so this is a nice alternative.
Opened the mail this morning. Thanks so much for your cards, Linda and nylene . And just for you, Linda , a pic of me as part of the baking process: What an absolutely wonderful picture!!

grammadee gramma you would have enjoyed watching me fight with Silhouette and hearing my swearing. I actually designed a cut file for the tree design at the sides, but when I went to cut it, no luck. The blade barely scratched the surface. No idea why. You would NOT have enjoyed watching me give up, grab an Xacto knife and manually cut all those pieces. Of course I do not advise laughing or lecturing at me when I have a knife in my hand and am in that kind of mood... Me? Laugh at you? Maybe with you - - -

I have been slammed with work stuff and Ken's medical stuff. I actually somewhat ahead on the work stuff which I hope means an easier January. The whole medical system just sucks these days. I handled six calls in one day trying to get his CT scheduled. I swear the right hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing!!
Christmas is different than it used to be. The kids grew up, now the grandkids are growing up. No more Santa magic. For year Ken was Santa. He still has the suit I made for him stored in the closet. I was thinking the other day that it should go to our oldest son for him to use with his grandkids.
For several years between our kids hitting the teen years and having kids of their own we participated in "Christmas Promise". It was an organization that worked with schools in low income areas to have kids writing Christmas letters. The teachers would then refer students to us. We would then post the letters on walls of the facility we used and companies and individuals would adopt the the kids and their families. Every child got a coat, shoes, underwear and socks, a blanket or sleeping bag. Then they got books, art supplies and withinh reason whatever toy they asked for. We handled dozens of bikes. Family was included. If grandparents and/or others lived in the home. They were included. Over time we paid utility bills and car repairs. Even dentures for a Grandmother. Food boxes were included. It was a flurry of gathering donations, wrapping, tagging, loading into Santa sacks. On Christmas Eve we would send out about 100 Santas in full dress. Only the Santa went to the door and the family did not know we were coming. We sent out somewhere around 4,000 gifts a year. It was crazy - I loved every minute of it. Eventually the group who started the group aged out and after 25 years Christmas Promise ended. Much like Nylene's story of no one wanting to step up and help. I have wonderful memories of that time.
The youngest of the grandkids will be 21 next year. Their gifts now include silly socks, some sort of shirt or sweater and gift cards. The baking is now limited due to Ken's diabetes and the big dinner is at the one of the kids' home. But - you know what? I am so lucky to have my adult children want to carry on what they grew up with.
So to all of you - enjoy the memories my friends. The ones you have and the ones you'll make.

grammadee, those last couple of layouts are absolutely adorable. You have been scrapping up a storm. I'm glad you got your phone problems solved. I'm sorry you are not feeling well. Have you tested for Covid? The cough you described sounds familiar! I'm sorry you have to cancel your meet-up with justjac. I can empathize with your Silhouette issues. I just go nuts when I can't get it to work. Lately it has been behaving. Linda, are you feeling better yet? We got our flu and Covid shots 2 days before we tested positive for Covid. We were probably already infected. If we had reactions we didn't know because of the covid symptoms. How fun that you will have your whole family together during the Holidays. I hope you all have a wonderful time. kitbop, I'm glad you had a Happy Birthday. I hope you get everything done in time for Christmas. I know you have a lot going on this year. joyfulnana, I am so sorry about your car. I hope with the new battery it will be dependable and have no further problems. Did you finish your blanket? It will be so cuddly. kellyr21, it's nice to see your happy face popping up. I hope that all the construction work on the apartment is done so you can have a peaceful Christmas. You have had a long time of noise and inconvenience. Do you have Christmas plans? gramma, I'm glad you are a bit ahead of schedule for all your year end computations. What a wonderful service you provided for needy families through your Christmas Promise. You know you really made Christmas better for many families. I'm sorry that you haven't been able to continue it. It feels so good to give of yourself and know that someone deeply appreciates it. You are a sweetheart! What are the retirement plans or have they been put on hold? Did you find a reason for DH's dizziness? I hope so. I am having a hard time getting anything done. I have no energy and my back aches all the time. I think it's just covid residual, but I wish it would leave and my taste would come back! Today is our anniversary. 55 years. We are going to dinner, not just picking it up. I hope it's not noisy because DH can't hear in noise. We may decide to just bring it home after all. I am loving the Pea cards. I have them hanging on the door at the top of my entryway. I will take a photo in a few days. Thank you Peas! I am so grateful for the friendship of each of you. I hope you all have a warm and happy Christmas if I don't get back here again before Sunday.

gramma - what a wonderful thing you did with Christmas Promise - so many kids and families helped. I think it's awesome that your kids are carrying on your traditions - AND that you're willing to let go and allow them to do so. Our traditions are in flux right with 2 out of the house and 1 in the grumpy teen stage but I enjoy the memories of past Christmas and am enjoying watching my older two adapt our traditions to make them their own - much as I did with my mother's. grammadee - also wondering if you've tested. Regardless - I hope you're on the mend and this virus doesn't wreck too much havoc on holidays plans for you. nylene - Thank you - I am feeling better thankfully - just a little tired still - just in time to get another vax (TDaP) on Friday - poor planning on my part for sure. Take it easy and let your body heal. Happy Anniversary to you and your DH - 55 years is awesome! I hope you enjoy your dinner and your senses are back soon. Today I'm baking mini loaves of bread - I have 12 pumpkin gingerbread cooling and 6 cranberry in the oven. Still need to make another 6 cranberry and then package them up for DD16 to distribute to her teachers. There'll be a few leftover that I'll pop in the freezer. And DH messaged me - the plumber will be here tomorrow afternoon to (hopefully) fix the drain so the dishwasher will work again, figure out the slow drain in the bathroom, and connect the drain to the drainpipe in the screen room sink. I'm very happy to finally have all thats scheduled but now I need to hurry up and finish my pre-Christmas cleaning before tomorrow afternoon (at least on the ground floor - upstairs can wait for now). I was already behind schedule due to the vax side effects. So I doubt anything will come of it but we have a 9% chance of SNOW on Christmas Day to go along with our coldest Christmas since 1981. Would be SUPER cool if it happens though. Merry Christmas to all my pea-friends!

Seems to be full throttle towards Christmas in this last week, doesn't it! gramma - I have linked 2 of the placemats and done an amazing job of handstitching so that it is agreeable even to picky me. It only took me about 30 minutes for the one, so when I find 2 more hours I'll finish the table runner Great idea - ty! And thanks for the birthday wishes. It always feels very uneventful to me and over so completely because Christmas is crowding in. I wouldn't change it at all, just how it is. I love your "Christmas promise" program. Our city does "adopt a family" programs - our group at work always takes a family and we all contribute in some way (buying presents, GCs for grocery stores, wrapping, or just sending e-transfer to the responsible person which is all I mustered this year). However, there is no personal connection at the end, so it's a little less "feel good". Also, I think the families self-refer to the program, so they are expecting some assistance. grammadee - absolutely adorable picture! Are you feeling better? Linda - weather is whack. I grew up where we saw snow maybe once every 5 years, and it would be heavy, wet, and last less than a day. Now that same town is under a foot of snow, expecting more...and this is the 2nd significant snow event of the season...and it's not technically even winter yet? It's hard when the kid's "age out" of Christmas. Mine seem to have kept a lot of Christmas spirit as they've become adults - nothing we did, just their personalities? It helps that they're all still here at home. When they move out, I'll struggle with the season. Re: vaccinations. Employee health e-mailed me and informed me that my DT&P is out of date and they want to give me a booster. I told them to stuff it until next year sometime...I've had 2 recents vaccinations, a bad cold, and stress out the wazoo, and what I don't need is another challenge to my immune system! nylene - HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! You guys are exactly double us: we are at 27.5 years right now Have a nice supper out! We're heading off to family on Friday after Katie gets home from work at 8pm. It's a 6 hour drive, probably more because it appears we'll be driving in a snow storm. If it's too bad, we'll leave saturday morning but DH wants to get there ASAP. Gonna be a cramped ride with all the presents that need to go, 5 adults, 2 dogs... I wish we still had our minivan.

Good Tuesday evening, Pokeys. nylene, I hope you get your sense of taste and your energy back soon. Try to take it easy. And Happy Anniversary! Your Christmas Promise program sounds like it was a wonderful experience for everyone, gramma. Sad to see those things fall by the wayside. Glad your holiday routines are adapting and that so are you. Hoping the fatigue from the shots is gone soon Linda. Wishing you a wonderful family vacation, kitbop: fingers crossed that the snow holds off. Two places I don't want to be caught in a snow storm: the prairies and southern Ontario. cycworker, how are you coping with the snow on the island? I got out of the house for the first time since I arrived home last Tuesday. Picked up the mail and my next month of med's, dropped off some info at the health centre for dh, drove to a nearby town to pick up the jumbo raw shrimp I had ordered. (I always cook them up and chill them on Christmas Eve--a family favourite--but last time I was in that town a few weeks ago the flash frozen raw ones were not in yet). Dh was off in the opposite direction for an appointment. He is supposed to be picking up a floral arrangement in that town--a gift from my sister-in-law, I think. I got back to town and bought groceries. Wore a mask whenever I was out of the car. Was thinking I would get home early enough to relax a bit. Then ds called. You mentioned unseasonal snow in BC, kitbop? Their family's flights to Mexico were CANCELLED due to snow. They spent three hours at the Vancouver airport trying to rearrange flights. Called their resort to notify them they would be a day late AND WERE TOLD IF THEY DID NOT CHECK IN TODAY THEY WOULD LOSE THEIR RESERVATION! Ds was calling me to see if I could get some last minute exchange for them on our time share. I got on it when I got home, but by the time I had located something available on short notice, he texted to let me know they had decided to book a house in Palm Springs on VERBO. They are driving to Portland this evening and flying from there in the morning. Feeling quite a bit better today, but the hack still starts up once in awhile. My niece's dd (aged 18) wants to come here to make Christmas cards on Thursday. I think I will test again tomorrow just to make sure I don't have anything worse than a bad cold. If it is +, I will have to cancel our play date..

kitbop - those will make a fabulous runner -well done. Safe travels! grammadee - hope DS and family have a wonderful vacation despite the hiccups. Glad you're feeling a bit better. Looks like snow is off the table for us but windchills in the single digits is still on. Feeling a bit bah humbug this year - just not into Christmas. Hoping that putting the trees up tomorrow will help. I did make a batch of cookies today.

grammadee, I'm sorry your DS's plans got derailed because of the storm. I hope they have a good time anyway. I'm glad you are feeling better. I hope that continues until you are back to your normal self. Linda, I hope that putting up Christmas trees gets you in the holiday feel. I remember when it was hard to get excited as the kids all got older and moved away. You can celebrate when your two older ones get home. I'm sure it will be fun and Chistmasy with all three at home. I am doing the last minute things to get ready for Christmas. It looks like with our differing Church schedules, I will have food available and people can come and go as they want. DS came to visit yesterday and said Swayzee has been in the hospital with RSV. She is home now on oxygen, (her mom is an RN) and her grandma is sick so we won't be seeing any of them until after the holidays. I think the rest of the family is healthy at the moment! Have a Merry Christmas, everyone. I hope you have a great time with family and friends.

Oh nylene - I'm so sorry to hear about Swayzee - glad she's home and will pray for a complete recovery. I'm sorry you won't get to see them during the holidays but I'm glad you'll get to see others even with the different schedules. I got some of the wrapping done today and the last minute shopping. Haven't put the trees up yet - DH has assured me that's tonight's activity. It's certainly cold enough to feel like Christmas but no snow afterall here Merry Christmas everyone! Safe travels for those travelling.

Happy holidays to all of the POKEYS. Have received lovely cards from Linda , nylene , kitbop , maribeth , msliz. Thank you. So sorry about Swayzee, nylene . Is she feeling better? Hopefully the stay in the hospital helped her little lungs to recover. So sad you won't be able to visit with them this weekend. Sounds like your home will be a busy one, though, with people coming and going all day. Please get enough rest. Maybe the tree decorating will chase those bah humbugs out the door, Linda . People ask me "Are you all ready for christmas?" and I always answer, "Christmas is coming whether I am ready or not." Our Christmas Day will be small--just dh and me and dd's family. They are on their way right now. Christmas Eve we will be joining dh's sister's family for a traditional Ukrainian meal. I didn't think I was particularly stressed about anything, but my gut decided to throw a tantrum yesterday and laid me out from 4:00PM on. At 9:30 or so, I took an advil and an adavan, and one or the other did the trick, b/c this morning all systems were working properly and the pain was gone. msliz , just got your Merry Moosemas card today--what a hoot! I hope you feel responsible for my purchase today of a bunch of Dress up Ryley stamps and dies. Ryley is a cute little moose marketed by Riley and Co. He will be featured on my Christmas cards NEXT year. Either that, or this purcase was just the after effects of the adavan... Trav and the girls arrived safe & sound in Palm Springs. The girls sent me a pic of them freaking out as dad drove through snow and then another of them relaxing around the pool.

Merry Christmas my pokey peeps!!!! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday. Linda I hope your holiday spirit peeks out. I did put my tree up last weekend, and I think it helped a little but I'm mostly just waiting for it be over lol. Are all of your kids home now? nylene, I hope Swayzee feels better soon, and that all of your family starts feeling better. Happy Anniversary!! And don't wear yourself out! I've had "Christmas will be what it is this year, and it will be ok" on repeat in my head all week. Wow what a derailment for DS grammadee! This weather has been a huge pain in the ss for everyone! I'm glad you are feeling better, take care of yourself too! gramma, what an awesome thing to be involved in with Christmas Promise! So many people helped. I laughed out loud when I got your card and your note about my choice in NFL teams! I still laugh when I think about it! safe travels kitbop! The blanket is finished - yesterday lol- baking is done, now I need to do the wrapping. DS2 came by Thursday evening and wrapped some of the things he had left here to hide, and yesterday was the day to get my car fixed. We got it to start. Yay!!! Until I went to the grocery store and shut it off. And it sizzled when I turned the car off, and it is dead for real now. So now my car is at the grocery store because it was too cold to stand in the weather to get the battery out. That's on the agenda this afternoon. And the Chiefs are playing at home so I need to either be back home before 3:30 or plan to stay away until the traffic clears lol. Happy Holidays to all of you lovely ladies, I hope they are wonderful! I am so grateful for all of you

joyfulnana - my big kids are celebrating Christmas at their house and coming to visit starting Tuesday evening. The Navy has two blocks of holiday leave - one that ends right after Christmas and one that starts right after Christmas and DS has the 2nd block this year. Yay for finishing the blanket. Fingers crossed on the car. I'm struggling with motivation today - got my chores done but need to bake and wrap. Doesn't help that DD is still sleeping and DH had breakfast and went back to sleep...

joyfulnana , I am so sorry about your car stuck in a parking lot! I hope you can get it changed out and running like a top again. Standing in the cold to do it doesn't sound very exciting for a Christmas Eve activity! I would love to see a photo of your blanket all finished. Congrats on getting it done. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. grammadee , what else could hit you before Christmas? I hope you really are feeling better, both the flu symptoms and the gut symptoms. Your quiet Christmas sounds nice. As time goes on, my Christmas gets bigger. Our DDs got together and decided they wanted to spend Christmas together and let their college kids get together, so after the last church schedule they will all be coming together. I had thought they would come in and out, but now I need to do a little more prep. I will have almost 4 hours after church before they all arrive which will help. It will be fun to get a big group together, but my house is small! Linda , when will the kids come, and are they still coming with the big storms? I hope your cookie making goes well and that you don't have to nag to get the trees up. LOL. Wishing all you wonderful Pokey Peas a Merry Christmas and a joyous holiday season. ETA: Just got the news that Swayzee is going to have a baby sister next year!

Wonderful news nylene - Swayzee will be such a good big sister! Good luck with your prep. My big kids aren't driving here until Tuesday - it's a 10-11 hr drive minimum so they'll get in late. Thankfully while their area and my area are both cold - there doesn't seem to be ice and snow between us so the roads should be fine.

Merry Christmas Eve, Pokeys!
Have my turkey defrosting. A gingerbread house decorated (so thankful that it came assembled), some salads made for tomorrow, frozen raw shrimp cooked and chilling in the fridge. Dd & hubby are in town picking up veggie/fruit trays. Mac & cheese in the oven for lunch. Planning a shower and nap for me before heading over to dh's sister's for supper.
Should have had my phone with me when I went out to get something from the garage. Both cats were expressing their displeasure about extra people and dd's house dogs being here. Should have snapped a pic of them and sent you a MEOWY CHRISTMAS!

That's so exciting nylene! Congratulations! Your little house will be filled to the brim with love and family, and that will bring some good memories. Linda I hope your spirit is perking up and that the trees are up! I'm so glad the big kids will be home to visit. grammadee that's an awesome gingerbread house and a happy builder! I love that ornament you popped into the thread lol! Well, my car is home, but still needs a battery. We were working on it and a guy offered to jump it. It started right up and then I ran errands with Cody and he sat in the car for me to keep it running. It ran for nearly 3 hours straight. And won't start again. But it's home and next week when the weather is better I'll mess with it. I still have some wrapping and cleaning to do. Always. I'm never ready early lol. Cody is coming over tonight and we are having a wrapping party. I had one with Joel on Thursday night. He got wrapping done, I got distracted talking lol. Can't do that tonight!

Merry day after Christmas my pokey friends!! I hope you all had a wonderful time with the people you love. For all of my whining about no Christmas Spirit the day turned out so awesome! It was just fun. Lots of chatter and laughter and if felt good to see my little family all gathered around the table together. Everyone wants a blanket, which I knew they would. I've already got yarn for 2 in cart at Joann. LOL. Linda I hope you get some good rest and I'm so glad your trees are up!

Happy Boxing Day! My favourite holiday of the year. We will be eating leftovers and playing with Christmas games and toys. Nothing to cook; nothing to buy (although there are alot of Boxing Day sales here in Canada, I don't feel the need to chase the deals); nothing to wrap. Just relax. Dh's sister and nephew & wife will be here later for leftovers and Canasta. Awesome blanket, joyfulnana and awesome pic of you and a sleeping Rudy. Mikey crashed on his mom while watching a movie after supper last night. It was a big day. We had just one of our "kids" here, but got to facetime everyone else. Ds and family who had planned on Mexico and wound up in Palm Springs sent some cool holiday photos of them by the pool, so seems like they were having a great holiday even though their plans were derailed. Dd and family are here for the week, but going skiing a couple of days. One of those days I will be driving to meet up with justjac to exchange our gifts and hang out a bit. Might pick up some sale items then. Will get to print all the holiday photos then, too.

joyfulnana , that is the most precious photo and your blanket is awesome. The colors are so pretty and I love the stripes. That's such a fun accomplishment. Does everyone want the same colors? You are going to be busy through the winter! It looks like Rudy was happy to snuggle with you in the Magic sleeping chair. He is so cute. Glad you had a great time with your family gathered together. It's always nice when they come home to visit and laugh and enjoy each other. I hope you get your car up and running soon. Winter does evil things to batteries! Linda , did you take a photo of all the new pajamas? That's a fun tradition. Are you all ready for the older kids to come home? I hope they travel safely and that you have a reunion full of love and laughter. Our Christmas was very nice. Our Church program was beautiful and I got home in time to finish all the prep for dinner and read Christmas stories to DH before the troops arrived. We ate in shifts to have enough room and then everyone gathered in my little living room (made smaller because of a Village and a Tree taking up room). No one seemed to mind and the younger grands sat on the floor. We played a game and just chatted for a couple of hours. Everyone then ate pie and went home. My bed saw me early last night! It was a busy but sweet day. ETA: I got to hold little Hailey for quite a while. I can't believe she is 8 mo. old already. She's a little afraid of strangers and we have only seen her twice, so I was happy that she allowed me to hold her. Could be the full tummy helped too.
