I picked my kitties up in Portland this evening! They meowed all the way back home, which is not typical for them. I know they must be sick and tired of being placed in multiple different boarding facilities for such a lengthy period of time starting with the people tearing my downstairs apart to repair the leak in my bathroom wall. They had to be out of the house through the different processes of the tear down and reconstruction, then on through the termite tenting and finally for the last of the packing of the house and throughout all the showings. I know the actual move itself from locking the door to the California house for the last time to receiving the key to this house in Oregon was really super fast, but it seems like forever since I had the cats home with me.
At least they still recognized me. They jumped down from their perches when I approached the big kitty condo they were in and started meowing at me. I asked the owner if they were doing that for my benefit or if it was because she was in the process of feeding all of the various cats in her care. She said they never did that when she was feeding, so it must be because they recognized me.
Since this house is totally bare and there are no familiar things to make them feel at home, I put a bunch of cardboard boxes with blankets inside them in numerous places all over the house for them to go snuggle in. I just received two large Chewy boxes today and put their kitty beds inside one and put it in one of the bedroom closets with the door partly open. I had a feeling that would be their preferred spot and it is so far.
I ordered a new cat tree and will put it together tomorrow. I also bought a couple of bird feeders to put right outside the windows to entertain them. I also bought one that suctions to the glass to put in the door from the laundry room to the side yard. I am a little doubtful as to whether the suction cups will hold, but all the reviewers have said that they do. I have a window cat perch coming that will attach to the inside of that door. They can lay on the window perch and watch the birds flying up to eat at that window feeding station. I plan to get the birds used to feeding there before I add the cat perch on the inside of the door. Both at once would probably insure no birds ever showed up.
I haven't had a seed feeder in years. I used to have one in my back yard and my cats loved watching the birds come and go, but it wasn't convenient to have near my pool because of the potential mess from the shells ending up in the water. I tried putting one of those net hammocks under the feeder to catch the mess, but a good wind would scatter the seeds into the pool anyway. I got tired of having to vacuum the seeds out of the pool so I just stopped. Yesterday I discovered that they now sell "tidy" birdseed that has been shelled so no more dropped shell mess! And the seeds are not whole seeds so they won't sprout! Anything that falls out of the feeder will just get eaten by the birds or the squirrels. No more weed patch under the feeder! Someone was thinking! So if you've stopped feeding the birds in your yard because of the dropped shells, you can start again. I am irrationally excited to watch my cats being entertained by the birds. I love that weird noise cats make when the see a bird. Mine have never seen a squirrel, so that will be interesting too.
