Saw Luther, thought about all the great recs I'd read here about the series, hit play and watched. Didn't realize until it was over that I watched a movie, not the series. Oops.

My fav is Prime Suspect. Helen Mirren is one of my all time favorite actors. We just watched it for the first time a few months ago and really enjoyed it! We also love Helen Mirren.

We didn't think the movie was nearly as good as the series. You need to watch the series! It will probably explain a lot of stuff in the movie.

I’m a bit surprised not to see
Father Brown Sister Boniface
Listed.
Both these are light fun mysteries that make a good change from the some of the darker British mysteries.

Not Britbox, but PBS has a newer miniseries Magpie Murders with Lesley Manville, who I adore.

Not Britbox, but PBS has a newer miniseries Magpie Murders with Lesley Manville, who I adore. It is based on the book written by Anthony Horowitz who also did Foyle's War and the first few episodes of Midsummer Murders. I enjoyed both the book and mini series and as Magpie Murders is part of a planned trilogy, I am hoping the next two books get turned into a miniseries as well!

I second third or fourth most of what has been listed and will add: Blue Murder McDonald and Dodds Inspector Morse Lewis Endeavour I am not sure which service these are on, Acorn or Britbox since we have both. I just started Endeavour on PBS today, and see that I have 9 seasons to catch up on if I like it! I'm only part way through the first ep, so we'll see how it goes.

Have you watched Inspector Morse and Inspector Lewis yet? Endeavour is the prequel to Morse but was made last of the three shows. I found Endeavour to be the "darkest" of the three but I enjoyed all of them, especially Lewis.

My favourites: Line of Duty Happy Valley The Tunnel Luther Scott & Bailey Silent Witness DCI Banks Vigil Good Cop River Annika Deadwater Fell Spooks Vera Prime Suspect Whitechapel I'm not sure whether all of those are on Britbox, but I daresay most of them would be. And this one isn't a crime drama, but I love it so much: Mum Yep, I think you got ‘em all!

Yep, I think you got ‘em all! Nearly..... I have now added Blue Lights to the list. I mentioned on another thread, it's the Northern Ireland version of Happy Valley, and it was brilliant! And Unforgotten.

You’re in Australia? Yes, Australia. It was on SBS here, which is one of our free-to-air channels. I'm not sure whether it is on BritBox or not, but I figured if it isn't yet, it probably will be soon.

We just started watching A Touch of Frost - two episodes in and we are liking it. It is an older one - I think the series started in 1992 so it isn't all bright and shiny compared to newer productions. An oldie but a goodie. Once you get to know the characters it just gets better.

The Unforgotten is superb, if you guys can get it. Nicola Walker is one of our favorite actresses. We also loved her in Last Tango in Halifax!

It is excellent. I will miss it. Inspector Lewis on PBS (thru Amazon) is another favorite. On Britbox I liked Grace, DCI Banks, Shetland-really like this one-and Vera. There are more, but those are the first to come to mind. ETA: I forgot about Morse. Really good, although I have heard some say that it seems dated. It was made awhile ago, but the stories hold up, and the acting is first rate.

I don’t know if it is my imagination, but British mysteries seem better than many American mysteries. I’m not sure why though.

The Unforgotten is superb, if you guys can get it. We watched three seasons and just had to stop - it is very well done and the actors were very good but it was just so very sad. All murders are sad of course but this show just hit differently and it was hard to go to sleep with everything churning over in my head. I don’t know if it is my imagination, but British mysteries seem better than many American mysteries. I’m not sure why though. I don't know either but one of our theories is that they aren't all shiny and clean and sparkly like American ones. Columbo comes the closest I think.

I don’t know if it is my imagination, but British mysteries seem better than many American mysteries. I’m not sure why though. I agree. Nobody does mysteries and police dramas as well as the Brits. One reason I prefer British shows over American shows is that they are more realistic. More often than not, American casts are all very attractive, which is not realistic at all. British casts are far more representative of the general population. Think of Criminal Minds, for example - I LOVE the show, but come on..... every one of the FBI agents is highly attractive (plus the one quirky character). Same for NCIS. Compare that to Vera or Scott & Bailey or Happy Valley or any British show. The Brits don't have to rely on good looks to gain an audience. (This is not a criticism of the American viewing public - I think you would happily watch shows with not-so-attractive characters. It's more that the makers of the TV shows are selling you all short, thinking that you need beauty in your shows.)

I have often thought that so many shows here have unrealistically good-looking characters. Real life is just not like that.

We pretty much only watch UK crime dramas, they do them so well.
