I have a portrait and it's getting up there in years. It doesn't do the scan and cut thing. I'm pretty sure it's one of the first models that came out.
When I print from it the quality is crap. So I have to print from photoshop.
If I print something and then run it through the cutter, it never lines up, no matter what.
So I came up with this little trick and it has been very successful.
I make my cut file and cut a piece of regular printer paper with it.
Then I leave the mat in the cutter, lift up the printer paper and put my photo (or whatever I want to cut) underneath it and line it up where I want it.
Then Send the file to cut again.
It has worked every time.
I don't think this would work with intricate designs. I've pretty much just cut my photos in circle shapes because I don't have large punches (or the space for them). But I think a sheet of die cuts would be fine.
Maybe this will help someone.

Good tip! I agree that Photoshop will give you a nicer print than the Silhouette software, but you should be able to increase the dpi in the Silhouette software settings.
I am curious if you have ever calibrated your machine? If not, that would explain why it won’t line up. I think I had to eventually calibrate mine a second time. Something had messed it up.
It’s a very good tip, though. I may have to try it when I want a nicer printed image.

I am curious if you have ever calibrated your machine? No. I didn't know this was a thing. I really think I have the first machine that came out. When I open the software on my computer it looks like MS DOS (almost). I'll investigate when I'm home and figure it out. I'll play around with some die cuts.

Cameos print? I had no idea. If you're in the Silhouette software, you can send to your printer from that software. You would then have to put it on the cutting mat and do your cutting.

I'll have to keep this in mind. I recently had to re-calibrate my Cameo, as it had gotten out of alignment. Nice to have this tip to use as a backup in case my calibration goes wonky again. TFS!

I'm getting a portrait 3 for Christmas so I will check out this tip. If I was going to shape cut a photo I would probably pull out my coluzzle.

I don’t remember what the templates look like but I remember having some sort of styrofoam mat to cut on. Where did all that go?

This is great info, I have the same problem. My Cameo is older, but not the OG, I had to let that one go a long time ago, too many issues.

I looked through the book and all over the machine and there is no indication of it being a later model. I need to look closer for a date.
