Found a book that I want to get as a gift. Would you pay $40 for a book that is about 100 pages long? I think the person would really enjoy it, but that just seems like a lot of money for a biography. What say the peas?

Seems expensive...is it rare? Out of print? Is it in your budget for presents?

It does seem expensive. Is there something very special about it?

What is the quality of the book? A hardback book in good quality paper is going to cost much more than a paperback on low quality paper. Whether it is worth it to me depends on my idea of "collectible". Do I love the contents enough to make it a long term part of my personal library or is it a one time read?
I just published a book through blurb. A 20 page softcover book on slick paper was $20. My classmate did his as a hardback with 40 pages and it came out to around $100. We aren't even going to mark up to sell (although the more you order of one book the cheaper it gets)

I don't measure the price of a book by its number of pages. I think if it's something that you can afford and know that the recipient would want, I would buy it.

It's the new book by Cat Stevens. Published by a company in the mid-east.

Not really. I'd have to know the book. Does it big sized? does it have lots of photo's? coffee table type book?

If it was something I think the recipient would enjoy and keep I would buy it. To just read it once I think that's a lot of money for a short book.

Some books are simply higher than others -- for many reasons. It may be a limited printing. If it's the perfect gift for someone, I wouldn't think it too high.

It really depends. If it was for a gift, probably. For myself? No.

Since the publishing company is in the Middle East, I'd want to know a little more about them to see where my money is going.
Also if the book is a hit, an American company may reprint it.
I've bought expensive books for presents, but those were more ones that you would look at more than once, like National Geographic, Smithsonian, photography type books...
Have you checked Sam's Club, Costco or places like Books A Million that get seconds? I've gotten best sellers that way because not all of them look like seconds.

Not for that book, because I dislike Stevens and won't be putting any money is his coffers, but another author if the recipient would really like it? Sure.
