North Bergen students disqualified from Junk Kouture finals because of country’s ‘cross-dressing’ laws

With its bold white wings, the shower of faux blue and white roses dotted all over and the gold caduceus symbol on the chest, “The Nightingale,” a dress stitched entirely out of recyclable material by a pair of North Bergen High School students, is a creation to behold.

The work of fashion art earned seniors C.J. King and Jazzlyn Vargas entry to the international finals of the 2022 Junk Kouture competition in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital of Abu Dhabi this month after wowing the crowd at the regional competition in Manhattan in October.

But their crowning moment never came. Just 30 minutes before showtime, the North Bergen teens were informed by the contest organizers that a UAE government inspection deemed the outfit “inappropriate” because C.J., a boy, would be walking the dress down the runway.

“I was heartbroken,” Jazzlyn said in an interview with The Jersey Journal Thursday. “I wasn’t heartbroken for myself, I was for C.J. That week was his whole world, and I wanted him to have it so much to be on stage and look beautiful, and when they were like ‘he can’t walk’, I cried.”

The disqualification was first reported by Hudpost.com.

The dress, as intricate as it is flamboyant, was created from blue sterilization wrap sourced from Hackensack University Medical Center for the competition, which challenges students to design and create couture from recycled “junk” and present it on stage.

It was created as a “full-on love letter” to nurses and health care staff who worked throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Jazzlyn noted that her mother is a nurse, and C.J. and his mother had health problems in the past.

C.J. said emotions were running high as he walked back to the dressing room while other contestants were getting prepared to take the stage.

“I finally was explaining to the other models what was happening and not one of them had a dry eye,” he said. “Every single person cried, and it was hard because I still was like ‘you’ll be fine, you’ll be fine, go kill it, don’t let this get you down’.

“But when I got pulled … I had no idea, I had no clue, I was so blindsided.”

The UAE government lists cross-dressing a punishable offense, and the U.S. State Department has cited reports that it has acted against cross-dressing individuals in the past.

Still, art teacher Steven Defendini, who contributed to the project, said he sought clarification from the organizers to make sure there wouldn’t be a problem before the group committed to flying to the UAE for the finals.

Defendini said he was told that if the cross-dressing occurred in the arena, during the competition, everything would be fine. Organizers and their staff were stunned when the government inspectors banned C.J. and two other entrants from competing.

North Bergen could have tried putting someone else in the dress, or even have C.J. on stage without makeup or nails. But Defendini said it would’ve been “inauthentic” and that they didn’t want to tell C.J. he couldn’t be himself.

Yeah, "renegotiating debt" was the 1st thing all the lenders he screwed over tried, only to have him declare the business entity into which it had been placed bankrupt. He's not "smart," or a "good negotiator." He's a conniving thief. I look forward to seeing all that debt come due shortly, and I hope he wasn't able to sell off any national secrets before the FBI came to retrieve OUR stolen papers.
